Here we learn how to use sidechain compression to create punch and clarity in instruments, when and how to apply it, and when not to use it. There are 1 million sidechain compression tutorials on the internet, but i find a lot of them are misinformed and vague. There are many applications for sidechain compression not just for kick and bass. You can even creatively duck sounds in rhythmic ways for extra movement in your mixes.

It is not often that I take time to comment but man.. this time, it is worth it! ... YOU ARE AN AWESOME COACH! ... I was knocking my head on the wall for years... records labels were telling me... "use sidechain!" you got a really nice song but...." Use a sidechain!" ...all the tutorials I watched online were hard to understand and I was ending up saying "to hell" ... but you did it man, you explained it in the way I needed to ear it! Sitting in the studio with my ref monitors ON I made real time tests with my own songs while listening and relooping your video over and over and now... you know what.... I GOT IT!!!!! Now I not only sound better, my bassline and synths give a lot more groove in my tracks! I subscribed and already searching for more material from you! Thank You!!

Instead of freq splitter, you can use Ableton stock plugin called "multiband comp" turn of the high's ;) Another great tip for the comp setting are long attack for lush pads to get that future sounding vibe ...

You changed my life right now ! I've been into producing for 2 years now (don't know why i don't know about side chain, but it is what it is) and just finished a song with 110 sound chains, and i've been mastering it with my knowledge, which i guess was too shallow. Now as my album is coming to a closure i'm just going around videos, learning how to properly master and this one was an eye opener. Nonetheless if someone would like to give me some feedback, write he mere or just type in "Nebula - Nemo Metodiev" and teach me there.

That last example is really interesting. The EQ function on the Compressor acts as sort of a filter for which frequencies of the 'feed' audio are actually used by the Compressor to do the gain reduction... But by placing the entire Side-chain Compressor into the 'Frequency Splitter' it is acting as an EQ for which frequencies are gain reduced. Probably going to download that! :) Also the "Synthwave" example was awesome. Amazing how a boring pad with a simple drum look can be made so vibey and dynamic. I like to think of Sidechaining as allowing for *silence* to become an instrument which you actively use.

Thanks for the tips and explanations! appreciate it, I would just say, it would help if, when you are A-B the on and off of the compressor, just do it, we can see the cursor, maybe when you say, here is with here is without, it distracts from hearing it properly. Just an observation. Thanks !

do you find it necessary to sidechain the kick on other drum sounds like tom, snare, hats or other percussion like world drums for the kick to be super clear and crisp? I'm Using Maschine to record beats with multiple kits and trying to keep the kick sounding clean. I'm really trying to keep things as simple as possible so if i could just not side chain i would choose that. but it would be nice for my mixes to be loud....gah

For those clicks when the attack is short, using RMS mode instead of Peak mode does the job. I dont know if this has any downsides however.

Does Papadosio use sidechain compression in a live setting? I'm working on project where I'd like to run a trigger from the kick and snare back into ableton for sidechaining during a live performance. Not sure the best way to do this. These videos are great! Thanks!

you could easily set this up live using the same style of routing. You would need to lower your buffer to perhaps 64 to get the compressor to act fast enough but it's very doable through ableton.
