After 4 Seasons Samurai Jack was one of the great gems of US Animated shows....It was literally one good series finale from being the best piece of US produced animation ever. They brought it back and gave it a truly epic final season that delivered some of the very best episodes and moments of the entire series....and brought the whole story to a beautiful conclusion. It has been cemented as the best US produced Animated Series of all time. Anyone who tries to detract from the ending clearly didn't understand the show.

I subscribed to a lot of video essay channels recently and when this video popped up I just assumed, from the quality, that this was one of those channels with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Keep doing what you do, you're making amazing things and people will notice!

The entire point of the show was the bittersweet tragedy of Jack's story. Jack would either sacrifice his past to live with the future, or sacrifice his future to save his past. Jack's promise, purpose, and destiny was to save the past and undo the future that is Aku. The tragedy is his character is that there was never going to be an all-good outcome. He couldn't save his family and his entire world in the past while keeping everyone he grew to love in the future. The tragedy was baked in from the start. Stories don't have to be told in the same way, you don't HAVE to give a main character a great change in perspective. That is common and useful, but that isn't the type of story Samurai Jack was trying to tell.

The only "perfect" option would be to perhaps establish the whole "alternate reality" thing via the magic of time travel...and to have Jack kill "future Aku" in an epic battle, then return to the past and make short work of "original Aku" in his time.....establishing that both timelines/realities are now free of Aku.

i recently got into your channel because of your copaganda series and was so excited to see you'd done a video on samurai jack! it's one of my favorite shows and the fifth season is visually stunning, but i was also disappointed by the finale. i can't remember who said it, but someone pointed out how in the episode with the shaolin monks from the original run, jack turns down an opportunity to go back to the past in order to save the monks who had helped him, so the finale felt like it really deviated from everything we knew about jack. i wish they'd explored the possibility of jack giving up the chance to go back and killing aku in the future in order to save his friends, especially considering they went the route of not following through with the prophecy setup with the guardian. it would have made sense to have him go back to the past if they had to keep it pg, but in making it more mature it just felt out of tune with the rest of the season to me

Consider this....Should "Kill Bill" have ended with the Bride NOT killing Bill. She wants to kill him at the beginning, and you can argue that she doesn't have a changing arc in that sense. When you deal with a character whose is on a mission that MUST be completed, and that defines their character....to then twist them away from that....having them fail or give up their mission....will always feel like a betrayal. Ashi exists to personify the tragedy that Jack was never going to get a satisfying ending, he saves all of existence and the entirety of the future from Aku....but loses anything and everything about that future, any friends he made along the way. That was always going to be the tragedy of it. He had no perfect option. "Saving everyone" and "Saving the world" becomes a relative definition. He saves the future, he forsakes the past....he restores the past, he forsakes one future for another.
