In this 1980s sci-fi classic, small-town California teen Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is thrown back into the '50s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) goes awry. Traveling through time in a modified DeLorean car, Marty encounters young versions of his parents (Crispin Glover, Lea Thompson), and must make sure that they fall in love or he'll cease to exist. Even more dauntingly, Marty has to return to his own time and save the life of Doc Brown.

@carn9507

yeah but Rick & Morty evolved from the really vile "Adventures of Doc & Mharti" that creepshow Justin Roiland made before, where 'Doc' forces 'Mharti' to perform sexual acts on him which Rick & Morty has made numerous references to (particularly when Rick says 'lick my balls"). Roiland has also stated an attraction to 14 yr olds, been sending sexual messages to minors online and got upset when people pointed out that is comment that "in some realities Rick and Morty are in a loving healthy relationship with each other" was pretty frickin' weird. Can we please not taint BttF with that?

Marvin Berry is the one in the climax band. He’s on the phone with his cousin. “You know that new sound you’re looking for?” Evidently, he’s talking to Chuck Berry, who would then sing Johnny B Goode three years later.

@@FrancisXLord Except the song Rocket 88 was recorded in 1951. It's considered to be the first Rock and Roll song. Even Fats Domino's Ain't That a Shame predates Marty going back to 1955. Only by a few months though. And we can't ever forget Sister rosetta Tharpe. She essentially taught Chuck Berry to Chuck Berry. Beginning in the 30s and 40s, she was the first recording artist to use heavy distortion on an electric guitar. But I love back to the Future. And the school dance scene is just all in fun.

@FrancisXLord
@FrancisXLord 3 ай бұрын
@@nellgwenn I did not know that. Now I wonder if Robert Zemeckis did, because I always read it as implying that Marty invented Rock n Roll, thus presumed Johnny B. Goode was the first. 'It's Marvin. Your cousin Marvin Berry! Do you know that new sound you're looking for? Well listen to this!' I presumed the 'new sound' to which he was referring was Rock n Roll. Was that presumption wrong? Or was it just generally presumed in popular culture that Chuck Berry invented Rock n Roll?

Nothing changed in the photo of Marty and his siblings. Doc was reacting to Marty's statement that he'd never seen his dad stand up to Biff before. When he heard that, Doc suspected George's newfound courage might change things in the future, but he didn't have the heart to voice his concerns to Marty -- or the time to do anything about it, for that matter.

Marty's line "yeah, well history is going to change" literally gives you the plot for the film. The town square is actually at Universal Studios - it appears in a lot of films & TV - though the rest was shot all over Southern California (the mall is in West Covina, for instance).

Why wasn’t it called lone pines mall before we see Marty go back to 1955? We already see other instances of the predestination paradox in the film, implying that even before we see Marty go back to 1955, he’s already been there and caused things to happen because 1955 has already happened. For example, we see the predestination paradox in Marty giving Goldie the idea to run for mayor, Chuck berry getting Johnny b good from marty , and Lorraine getting the idea to name her son Marty from Marty, so why didn’t they go with the predestination paradox for the name of the mall as well)

It's like " My g*d.. where'd the time go? To think, we've come so far.." Anwyay, I think Doc WAS wearing a bullet proof vest even at the start of the movie. I mean Marty would've warned him already in the past. You can even see it when he first gets shot. Ther's no blood and he was concealed behind the car.

To your guys' point about the movie "trying to tell you guys" something, or that they "choreograph" major plot points.... That's the exact reason why this movie is used as a prime example in screenwriting/storytelling classes, on how to tell stories properly in terms of setting things up, and paying things off later. That's what's great about this movie, is that there really is no fat to trim off or add, so to speak. Nothing comes out from just nowhere; everything serves a story and character purpose. Everything from establishing that Marty can ride a skateboard, wants to perform music in front of an audience, and something brief like the DeLorean's starter malfunctioned, are all set up early, so they can be brought up and come into play later.

The song "Johnny B Goode" was sung by Chuck Berry (who was known for his "duck walk" onstage). There is scene in the film where Marvin Berry (lead singer of the Starlighters) steps off stage and calls "his cousin, Chuck." He then says, "remember that new sound you were looking for? Well listen to this!" (and then holds the phone out to the stage). The name of the mall is changed to "Lone Pine Mall" because when Marty first arrives in 1955 and speeds away from the Peabody Farm, he runs over one of two small pine trees.

Great reaction like always, love this movie its one of my favourites, and the trilogy is a timeless masterpiece. There are a cameo in this one, Huey Lewis and the News provided the song "Back in Time" to the Back to the Future soundtrack, which played during the film's credits. At the beginning of Back to the Future, Huey Lewis took on a nerdy persona in an uncredited cameo as a judge for Battle of the Bands. Marty's band "The Pinheads" played a hard rock cover of Huey Lewis and the News' "Power of Love," but were ironically rejected by Huey Lewis' character. And this was the first film role for Billy Zane While he played a bigger role than a short cameo, Billy Zane made his acting debut as Biff's friend Match in this movie and second. The attraction of the mom to Marty is actually a known psychological phenomenon. When a parent and child are separated from birth and later reunited, it's not unheard of for them to be romantically attracted to each other. It's like their brains can sense that they have a deep connection, but they didn't experience the appropriate parent/child bonding that should have happened. I have heard of two notable cases of this happening irl, and it was featured in an episode of Law and Order: SVU. In one of the irl cases, a father was reunited with his daughter after she had been adopted. The mother put her up for adoption because she knew the dad was bad, but she went on to stay with him and have 2 more kids with him. The father and daughter started a romantic relationship that created a son between them. Later, the daughter (and the son, I think) was murdered by the father. It's super sad because she had a really good life with her adopted family before she reunited with him. It's a great example of how it isn't always a good idea to seek out the people who gave you away. The other irl case I saw was a mother and son who ended up having a romantic relationship after reuniting. The SVU episode was a sperm donor who would seek his daughters out for the purpose of exploiting their attraction to him to have sexual relationships with them.

It’s funny to watch you guys call out the foreshadowing that’s going on but you have the benefit of 40 years of learning about the structure of films so that you can recognize it. This was genuinely original storytelling that was not only endlessly entertaining at the time but it influenced everything that you’ve watched in since it came out that provided you the insight to recognize the foreshadowing in Back to the Future. Good stuff.

Michael J Fox was already major TV star on the sitcom Family Ties when he filmed the three movies. He was really about 23-24 when he made this but his height was 5 ft 4 in. The first movie here was NEVER intended to be a Trilogy but was so successful they decided to make 2 more, all connected seamlessly. Christopher Lloyd [Doc] had already been in major movies as supporting players, most famously in One Flew Over the Coo Coo's Nest in 1975, and on the sitcom Taxi [1978-1983] where he played another wild type, "Reverend Jim" a tripped out, burnt out former Hippy type taxi driver who half the time didn't know where he was or anything. Seems Reverend Jim turned into Doc , lol

I saw this when it first came out. Like a lot of people, I thought Doc, hanging onto the cable from the tower and the other clipped to the bottom of his pants, would get electrocuted, being part of the circuit that the lightening travels in order to send Marty back. In other words, this would "break the loop" and not let Marty travel to any other time. (And the sequels were NOT planned when this movie was made, only after its great success.)

they are wearing old people make up because they used the same actors for past and present...it saved a lot of money on actors...trust me this was a genius idea at the time and it really paid off. 33:40 It was when Marty told Doc how George knocked out Biff -- he'd never stood up to Biff before. The Nostalgia Critic quotes someone, one can put the characters and the audience through so much as long as they finally have a happy ending. They definitely stress the daylights out of them here. 42:50 Marty destroyed one of the twin pines. Hence the payoff, "Lone Pine Mall" instead of "Twin Pines Mall". The ending was not intended as a sequel set-up -- merely a joke, reflecting the trope, "And the Adventure Continues". The ending and the sequel would have been incredibly different, had a sequel been intended or even envisioned.

If you think about what happens in Part II, re: parallel timelines, then you realize that Marty goes "back" to the future of the changed timeline he created. As far as the family he grew up with is concerned, he rode out one night...and never returned. But what happened to the Marty who grew up in this timeline, with the prosperous family? Did he return to find our Marty having taken his place, or did he also return to a changed timeline...?

How time travel works in the Back to the Future films is that the old reality ceases to exist getting replaced by the new reality. That means the family Marty grew up with does not exist anymore. This isn't Avengers Endgame.

I learned from the comments under another reaction of this movie why the Twin Pines Mall changed to Lone Pine Mall (I actually had never noticed the sign change before, so good on you for catching that): When Marty was driving away from Old Man Peabody shooting at him, he ran over one of his pines! You even hear Peabody yelling something like, "My pine! Why you!!" The name Peabody is kind of an inside joke too. In the 60s, a segment of the Bullwinkle cartoon show was called "Peabody's Improbable History" and Mr. Peabody was a genius dog who invented a time machine and would travel to different time periods with his boy, Sherman. They actually made a computer animated movie of Peabody and Sherman a few years ago. I never got around to seeing it, though.
