OceanMind does not endorse the blowing up of vessels. This action is done independently from OceanMind by the Indonesian government.
The vessel sometimes known as the STS-50 had been engaging in illegal fishing targeting Patagonian toothfish, also known as Chilean sea bass, for years. It was in the Northwestern Pacific in Chinese ports. It was in Southwest and Southeast Africa. It was operating in the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific and Southern Oceans. The vessel just became a rotating cast of identities, names, home ports, and flag states that they were constantly changing out in an attempt to evade law enforcement around the world. They lied to port officials, they lied to coastal states, they submitted false documentation relating to the catch onboard the vessel and what they were trying to export. A significant portion of the world's fisheries are overfished and this trend is only growing.
IUU fishing is a major contributor to unsustainable fishing practices around the world. Some estimates have placed the upper end of the value at 23.5 billion US dollars per year in product and up to one in five fish being linked to possible illegal fishing. There's frequently an overlap in operators who are willing to engage in illegal fishing and in forced labor. If you're willing to break the rules for fisheries, you're probably also willing to break the rules and abuse your crew by forcibly keeping them onboard the vessel, which they can't leave because it's out at sea. The STS-50 is a case in point.
It really comes down to the problem that when you get off shore it's harder for law enforcement to monitor what's actually happening on board vessels. And this is where OceanMind comes in, OceanMind started out as a technology project to better identify illegal fishing for action by enforcement authorities.

I think several issues this would become less prevalent if we increased human activity at sea (e.g. by farming or settling there) thus making the sea/ocean less of a deserted place and therefore unattractive for criminal activity. This would also force people to value our oceans/seas more and address pollution there more fervently since it'd be home.

Few problems: 1. It doesn't stop people from building their own boat and hardware secretly, and hid their traces via usage of the black market for getting whatever resources they need for their Boat. You will be surprised at the length people will go for this kind of things. 2. "verified unhackable hardware" require lost of resources to create and to keep up to date. Any hardware, if not kept up to date, will eventually get hacked. But not all country have the resources/willing to spend the resources to create said hardware.....

Great to be able to catch the illegal fishing boat but really quite insignificant.. We need to use such tracking and accountability systems to make sure that we fish in a way that doesn't deplete our oceans, to create areas in which our oceans are able to recuperate. He talks about sustainable fishing practices, but those hardly exist, the only sustainable fishing is fishing in quantities that don't exhaust more than the waters are able to produce. This is not something that any commercial fishing tries to, or is capable of doing.

@@ahmedpatel7964 yups fish farming also destroyed the nature by catching fish in the ocean in order to produce fish powder to make fish pellet. I once run a project to convert organic waste into maggot by using Black soldier fly, it's quiet succesful as I live in tropical area and they can reproduce well in warm condition, I think if we can convert more organic waste into maggot, we can fed the farmed fish with maggot instead of using fish powder, it's more sustainable than curent method of fish farming.

Legal commercial fishing is also a huge problem . The reality is that we don't need to eat fish to survive , B12 and Omega-3 can both be synthesized from plants and algae . Aquaponics allows to raise fish and crops in a closed loop system on land and its energy costs are lower than that of fishing boats. If governments subsidies aquaponic farm in the same way that they do fishing then we can save the oceans.

Instead of blowing up those ships, why not use some to add to their patrol fleet? Bonus stealth points for using their own ships as undercover patrols. He did say they didn't have enough vessels. Send the message that they're going to pay for their own destruction and that they won't know where is safe. Second, these boats and ships didn't appear to have been cleaned before sinking. Dumping heavy fuel oil and various other toxic crap into your water doesn't sound like protecting your oceans to me. Third, the steel hulled ships could have been towed to a suitable reef building location and sunk there, after cleaning of course. Broadcast the video of the sinking, thanking these criminals for their contribution and how you can't wait for more. I get what they're going for but it's a wasted opportunity.

Essentially it is legitimate to eat, farmed fish is too toxic for safe human consumption. The legitimacy and motives of so called World authorities, is questionable and has a terrible track record itself. However, illegal fishers are often using toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde, to preserve catch until it is convenient to fence it. Chinese fishing vessels are an arm of the PLA, so they should be considered a national security threat. Capture the crew, and deport them, and capture the vessel, and recycle the materials and components, for local infrastructure.

Nothing about fishing is necessary for human life. Remove all subsidies for meat, dairy, and egg producers--this includes "seafood." Personal responsibility won't stop this, but please don't eat sea animals. AI tracking won't save us either. This video is structurally flawed. It assumes there's such a thing as "sustainable" fishing. Watch Seaspiracy for more information.

Great work. IUU fishing steals $450 million dollars from Somalia. Which is already one of the poorest countries and can't afford to lose $1. Korean, Taiwan, China, Iran, Yemen, Kenya, Thailand, are all involved. Not only are they illegally fishing but they destroy sea habitats by bottom trawling and other harmful fishing practices.

Haha if your willing to fish illegally, your assumed to be willing to keep (what is effectively) slaves or hostages? I don't know it seems like a leap... I mean just cause it has happened doesn't mean it is generally related.
