Thank you this fixed my problem! I've had to do this before 5 years ago, but this time bending the pins back worked, the alcohol did nothing.
@MarkFixesStuff
@MarkFixesStuff 4 жыл бұрын
If it's a recurring issue you have some other options, like sanding the pins with a fine grit glasspaper or the nuclear option - soldering physical wires between the boards and bypassing the socket entirely. Glad you sorted it and thanks for taking time to comment.

this video was super helpful! my dreamcast had a lot of resistance when pulling the socket circuitboard from the socket power pins...i was afraid i'd break it...but it popped off after careful but strong pulling. i also used mini alcohol wipes (70% alcohol) and pressed it down on top of the pins all the way to the bottom and used it to rub off the barrier (think flossing action)...hopefully this will work..i'll wait an hour after cleaning, even though i know the alcohol evaporates quickly..i love my dreamcast too much update: my dreamcast won't start now :\ (will continue to troubleshoot maybe I missed a step in reinstallation) extra update: i didn't reconnect a piece that I removed to make screw installation easier...i think i will be ok im still going to wait for the alcohol to dry

Definitely a common problem with these consoles - I had the same problem on my original DC. Pins just needed a bit of cleaning. :) The DC also has a slightly annoying protection circuit which holds it in Reset if the fan is spinning too slowly, or stopped. So if people are still getting random resets, check to see if the fan is spinning OK and isn't clogged. (I bypassed this circuit on my "test" DC, but it's not recommended.) Also, important tip - remember to always put back the plastic insulation sheet under the PSU. ;)

5:10 FYI: 99.9% pure isopropyl alcohol actually does conduct electricity. In fact, it conducts electricity far better than diluted alcohol does. The advantage of 99.9% pure is that it evaporates very quickly and doesn't leave water or deposit mineral residue.

Thanks for the video Mark, the whole process seems less daunting now. Is there a drying time for the alcohol before you'd advise turning it back on? Sorry if it's a stupid question. My presumption is it's not a necessity to wait after reassembly, because the solution can't conduct electricity as you mentioned?

Hello, maybe you can help with my problem. I will shortly describe it: When i push power button it starts the fan, the red/orange light is on but it's not outputing the video (black screen), and the gd-rom is not spinning. By the way i think that the fan is working on a highest frequency (if there was any controller for the fan speed) because the fan in my other working DC is much more silent. Do you have any idea what can it be?
@MarkFixesStuff

The system is not booting/starting. It could be a board fault but I would first try to strip and clean the contacts as shown as that can be a cause.

My previous dreamcast had a faulty fan that randomly stop spinning causing a black screen, I was able to play by simply manually spining the fan until it spins on its own, I sold that dreamcast as spare parts, now with a dreamcast I bought to play through the gdemu has the same problem but the fan does spin well, I tried cleaning the pins of the psu and my dreamcast still gives me a blank screen after a few seconds of being turned on, since I haven´t used it for a while I just assumed I needed another dreamcast, but at least after a few minutes of trying, you know, turning it on and off many times, eventually the dreamcast didn´t freeze and I could actually play for hours, of course the problem is still present, what would be the solution in my case?

@MarkFixesStuff
@MarkFixesStuff 5 жыл бұрын
Good spot. The location isn't massively important as the board is just for power. It's fairly random as to how the cable is routed when you open a machine in my experience. You can pop it under the PSU if you like.

I've done this fix so many times in the past. Even when I had the Dreamcast back in 1999/2000. I had this problem early on and worked out this was this issue. After the fix, it worked for a little while but the problem always resurfaced and I could never really fix it...I wonder if there is anything else I could do to sort it out...?
@MarkFixesStuff
@MarkFixesStuff 6 жыл бұрын
The problem is that the pins are really prone to furring up and the pads contract when the machine gets warm. My "extreme" fix is to give them a quick rub with fine grade glasspaper and then clean with electrical contact cleaner. I have toyed with the idea of wiring directly between the upper and lower boards, bypassing the connector entierly, but this is something I've not got around to. It would also mean modifying the DC from stock and many people hate that.
@NiGHTS1980

Mark Fixes Stuff - Retro Console and Computer Repairs, Reviews and MORE! Yeah I might try scuffing up the pins a bit. I haven't tried bending them slightly which is what others have suggested to do as well. I just watched another video where a guy soldered up the pins a bit to give them more thickness, but I don't really wanna do that. I think the females connectors on the PSU itself are slightly loose and rattle around a little. That could also be the problem but I'm not sure what to do about that...

... I just bought a second hand dreamcast, and my problem is that the console turn on and than, i put the disk inside, and right when I close the door the console turns off. That's it, no reboot, it just stops working. Do you think trying as you did in the video could be useful? Thanks a lot :)
@MarkFixesStuff
@MarkFixesStuff 5 ай бұрын
Hmmm... It could be related and I would certainly try that first. My second thought could be that the internal powersupply might have a capacitor that has dried out. This could mean that when the console powers on it's OK, but as soon as the disc is in and you close the door, the drive attempts to spin up which puts a larger demand on the power supply and causes the unit to drop power. I would try the connector first though.

Well, to anyone who may be reading this in the future. It did work, and I spent 2 hours playing NFL 2K1 to "test" it. I had a fan on it to accelerate evaporation since 70 % isopropyl alcohol doesn't have the same vapor pressure as near pure. Any less, test at your own risk.

The thing with this fix is that it isn't permanent. Those connectors would get dirty again and again in due time, so the fix would have to be done repeatedly, which is a bummer when you're actually trying to play something for hours at one time then in the middle of the session the connectors get sooty again and boom...again this boring thing of opening up the console and clean the shit out. It wouldn't really last a whole game sesh until the damn thing resets itself, so to speak losing the motivation to play your game and do the fix...for just a couple of hours to days until it gets sick again.

@@leocalinawan8429 that’s good but not always enough on some really worn PSU boards. The spring contracts sometimes need to be really aggressively cleaned as well. One more permanent fix is to solder wires from the top board to the bottom which then bypasses the contact issue.

If it made it worse then it’s likely the tension of the contacts in the board connector. At least you know it’s the cause of the issue now. An alternative wills be to solder strap wires from the top board to the bottom, bypassing the connector. That always works but is a bit more work overall

Yes indeed. We have 240v of AC here, so a lot more to drop to the DC voltages required.!
