This console was ahead of it's time. It's really too bad that it wasn't more popular.

That wasn't the only problem though. Sega had previously been releasing new consoles left and right. First the Genesis, then the CD, and then Saturn. All of which were released fairly close to each other. The Saturn's surprise release didn't go over so well either. Heck, America didn't even know of it's development until 4 months before the console was released. Not leaving the company or press any time to promote it. Needless to say, Sega lost a lot of money and supporters. The Dreamcast was their last-ditch effort to make money and gain back all the supporters they had lost. The only problem was they blew their budget on the operating system and graphics. They promoted it well enough, but with people loosing faith in Sega, and the money it would take to actually make the console AND keep it at a low enough cost so middle class families could actually afford it proved to be too much for them. So the console, and Sega, sunk faster than the Titanic.

Actually dreamcast has lots of potential because of the operative system Windows ce which was used later on the XBoX but because of the lack of drm nobody wanted to make games for it

I still believe to this day that if Sega had the forethought to have put in a dvd drive instead of the cd-rom, it would have out done the PS2.
@winlover37
@winlover37 7 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. The lack of a DVD player is why everyone in Japan abandoned it. The biggest market for consoles, so that was a bad sign.
@MrManerd
@MrManerd 7 жыл бұрын
I love my Dreamcast but I disagree. A DVD drive alone would not have saved it because people simply expected the PS2 to be better in every respect. Now if it were possible to have added Ethernet and a DVD while keeping the price the same then that would have tipped the balance, but I'm sure that would have been impossible. Also, software piracy was the final nail in the coffin which would not have changed with a DVD player and Ethernet. I still say it would be possible to resurrect the Dreamcast without any changes if they had come up with a model that incorporated piracy in its business model kind of like shareware. The motto could be "If you liked the pirated version, wait until you try the full version with all of its extra content". The DVD version would only work if they came up with a technology that prevented the Dreamcast from executing code from a DVD. Like if they had a separate circuit board for DVD video and as soon as the Dreamcast detected DVD format it functioned only as a pass through to cary the DVD information to the separate DVD circuitry.

No, I doubt that. For one, that would have drove costs much higher, and they were already bleeding money. Plus, Sony simply had the brand loyalty and hype that was off the charts. Nothing Sega could have done would have saved it, because it was an amazing console. Everyone who had one agrees, and everyone who didn't never knew either way, because they held out for PS2.

+lassebasseish GameCube... Please. Controller was horrific and quality had NOTHING to due with the DC's demise. Sith pretty much summed up the major ones. Every day of the week I'm taking this system over the Cube (released 2 years LATER, btw). Sports games, online play (or lack there of) made the Cube a non-starter for me and people of my ilk. It was a vehicle for Nintendo's first-party games, that's it, and again, I preferred Sega's. No contest for me.
@sithsmasher7685
@sithsmasher7685 8 жыл бұрын
"It was a vehicle for Nintendo's first-party games, ..." That statement does not say it had no 3rd party support, only that 1st party was the main focus. Also, you do make some valid points, especially about Sega's incompetent marketing division (they always fucked that up after the MegaDrive/Genesis). I've played on DC, PS2 and GC and both GC and DC were better than PS2. The PS2 lacked video memory and often had crude textures and jagged gfx. If only the bulk of its games looked as great as GT3&4. lol

rly dude nothing is better than the ps2 not only games wise but units sold the ps2 is the #1 selling games console ever, so dude if you're gonna defend the dreamcast don't call it the "best console ever" call it an console that never rly sold well but had some good games on it. look I get you are clouded by nostalgia, but figures wise the ps2 is the best console ever period. Oh and they made another one and another one. #dreamcast2stilladream

Devon Jackson I agree with lassebasseish. Because PS2 had great sales, doesn't make it the best console hardware-wise. Like I said; I played all 3, and PS2 had the lesser graphics. Games like GT and MGS were more the exception than the rule.

Steven Stevens TBH I want Xbox to die just so they can make Halo and the other good exclusives they have for everyone.....But if $ony dies then the cancer fanboys will die too, we never hear M$ fanboys talking shit unless $ony fucks up, and barely hear them bragging during last gen compared to $ony this gen. We barely hear PC Elites talking shit now unless the consoles fuck up or brags about something that the PCs been having or been doing *cough* $ony *cough* . $ony fanboys talk shit all the time for the past like what 6years? And claim themselves as *true gamers* now, meanwhile only buys $ony products, and doesn't want to play with Xbots because fuck them when cross-play *helps games player counts* , when a real gamer plays on any platform, not just one and sticks with it for 20years claiming it as better meanwhile never touched another platform before. PC doesn't do that shit anymore, which makes sense because it's childish and Petty.

The NFL2K and the ability to pick your plays on the VMU was easily the best football experience I've had in a console football game. 4th and 1, lining up in a punt formation and your opponent not knowing anything about whether or not you were faking it is such a bad ass tension for local multiplayer gaming.

And Sony had enough funds to make the PS2 a DVD player at a low cost. Once again Sony don't succeed by the quality of their content, but by getting their consoles into your home any which way they can. CD player, DVD player, Bluray player, The one that isn't shit or the one that doesn't boss you around. They genuinely do some very boring consoles, and get very bored looking at them. Not saying they don't have some absolutely great fun games available, just the consoles themselves have very little soul.

Later I played PSU on the PC and loved it until it shut down. Now, there's a project to get PSU up and running again along with an already working PSO server. Loved those games. Loved PS as far back as PS 2 and 3 on the Genesis.

I don't really think that all games from the past were SO COOL and stuff. As well as not every modern game is "heartless". There are diamonds on both sides. In different meanings. And don't forget about how various are tastes of people can be. What you may find bad (for example, because of focusing more on visual sides and gameplay than on story) is acceptable for others. Also, indie games. Was that the thing in the past as wide as today? Doesn't feel like that. And, ya know, indie games tend to be original. Evolution of whole gaming industry is present, in my opinion. I guess, you're just having nostalgia touch.

That's a huge contributor, but you have to account for all of the reasons: - GD-ROM Disc format (SUPER EASY to play pirated games) - One joystick when every other console had two. - Dead last in graphics. Even PS2 was twice as powerful. - Many retailers refused to stock it AT ALL after the Sega Saturn debacle. - EA refused to make games for it. ... But hey, I bought one brand new last year and I love it more than anything, so yeah.
