I remember playing Sonic 2 and Mortal Kombat II on the Game Gear in the mid 90's, I borrowed it for half and hour from some kid and it was a blast. The Game Gear is actually the third best selling SEGA console, the Master System sold over 20+ million, counting Tectoy consoles. The portable is a Master System, the expanded color pallet is due and can only be accessed via its low resolution mode, games like Castle of Illusion, which uses the Master System mode, can't use the pallet, like the Atari 7800 which has a higher and lower res option, the lower, chunkier resolution has the benefit of a few more colors on screen. Stereo is also a byproduct of it being a handheld, because it had to have earphones and splitting the signal is a very simple alteration. So much so that many fans converted Game Gear titles to be played on real Master System consoles, with simple alterations to the pallet and the ability to use the proper, higher screen resolution of the console. Sonic 2 on the Master System is so much better, once you noticed how cropped the GG version is, it's hard to justify playing it today, this is the case of many SMS>GG or SNES>GBA games. Shinobi and Shinobi 2 are top games, they're also very easy once you know what to do and has a bit more depth than the 16-bit games, some fans are teasing to bring these to the Genesis, let's see if they manage to achieve this. What I like about the Game Gear, is that it feels like the Master System lived through it, many Japanese games are available, I always wanted to play Shining Force games on the Master System and it has many JRPGs as well, including really decent fighting games such as Fatal Fury Special and Samurai Shodown, with the above GG2SMS games, we can enjoy it directly on the console.

Hey man, I meant to respond earlier as I started this video the day it released. Loved this journey and hearing specific memories. It's interesting because, to this day, I've only ever once seen a GG in person and that was back in the '90s. At the time, I wasn't too familiar with handhelds so seeing colour on the screen blew me away!

I really enjoyed this video. Finally, someone that appreciates the Game Gear for what it was and not moaning about the battery life. I had a Gameboy when I was a kid and my friend had a Game Gear. Although I did enjoy my Gameboy, I was sooooo jealous of my mates Game Gear.
