I have been teasing this series for a very long time...and that's because it took a VERY LONG TIME to make...a twenty episode retrospective on every Sega developed arcade racing game in 3D! Because whether its retro gaming or modern pc gaming...Sega is the KING of the arcade racing genre! So buckle up and get ready for a retrogaming ride!
THE RULES FOR INCLUSION: 1) It must have had an arcade release (So no Sega GT) 2) It must be in 3D (Bye Bye Outrunners, etc etc) and 3) you MUST be racing against an opponent and not just a timer (sorry Crazy Taxi, Wild Riders)
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kurangui, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane,
tobemorecrazy, Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Humanoide70, Ben Parfitt, Holder Schmidt, Tim Lehner, Shad Uttam, Dan L, James Mann, Richard Schneider, Coupon Joe, Sunder Raj, Dorfus the Maple Syrup Man, John Booty and Craig M!
Up next: Sega Rally 2! the original Sega Rally was a massive hit for Sega both in the arcades on the Model 2 hardware as well as at home for the Sega Saturn...so of COURSE Sega made a 3D arcade racing game sequel on Model 3! It's got all the off road rally racing fun you remember...except its bigger, better and most importantly faster! Plus it was ported to Dreamcast...with mixed results. Retro games have many versions...and not all are as good as the others!
But if somehow you have never played Sega Rally 2...go play it! It's not like this is obscure gaming or anything!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

Thanks for this! I own the SR2 duel arcade machine, it’s as you say amazing speed and the road feel on the wheel is perfect,, you feel the bumps on the wooden bridge and the tires feel loose in the snow level, truly amazing fun. I never use the e-brake but have the down shifts just right. E brake is too far away from the wheel to be useful, was thinking of putting a extension bar on to see how effective the brake is. Love your channel! Btw I got a Model 3 Scud Race but having trouble with the sound when plugged into the Sega Rally 2 cabinet, I’m almost there just need the right sound amp.

Whenever you feature these amazing Sega arcade racing games I just have to groan that Sega continues to leave so many AMAZING titles wallowing in the purgatory that is niche emulation. A combo of two culprits: -Automobile licensing agreements -Losing access to source files, assets, or the tools used for the game's development. I think Sega wants to re-release the games using emulation but the licensing agreements made with Toyota, Lancia, and the other manufacturers are preventing it from happening. Sega most likely has the source code and assets stored away securely, but the workstations used to make the games are most likely long gone by now and they have no cheap solution to get their old SDK's working on modern Windows. If they did, they could have removed all traces of licensed cars and revamped the 3d models to avoid copyright violation.

Great video! I'm currently remaking Sega Rally in Unreal Engine 5 and it's been a pleasure to learn as much as possible about this franchise. But I honestly think the first one is still the best in pretty much everything: visual style, music, handling, console port. They actually went back to a more saturated look with SR3 and I overall prefer it to SR2.

@@VideoGameEsoterica Actually I'm just playing it with Supermodel for the first time and the arcade version handles sooo much better than the Dreamcast version. I'm actually enjoying it now, although I still prefer the weight and feel of the original personally. Nice retrospective. It's a shame due to certain technical limitations, that it didn"t look as cherry and bright, like the arcade version, but at least the dreamcast port was still good enough. One thing I always wished for, is that I wish this game, had about 30 stages/race courses. Games this good, deserve tons of race courses, and more cool music tracks.👍😄

I was never good at this game, but the Desert track music is secks-to-my-eardrums. Jun Senoue of Crush 40 composed that track. We had a Sega Rally 2 deluxe machine in Spartanburg at Mr. Gatti's until about 2011 or so when all their Model 3 games were being swapped with LCDs from their original projection screens. :\ Now it's closed. Graphically you could think the arcade version was from 2008 if you never played it! There was a PC port also that I downloaded way back when I was in middle school and that was actually fun to play. As a collector of Model 3 related hardware, this runs on M3 Step 2.0 and it is one of the easier Step 2 games to convert from another game to since it does not use a security chip like the later games (Daytona 2, Star Wars, Spikeout, etc.). I have a Virtua Striker 2 '99 ROM Board I've been wanting to set up as this game but one of the pins broke off the chips (27C322), and they're sadly a pain to solder back on! Fortunately I've been getting more patient and better at conversions after using the rest of my blank chips to set up Scud Race Plus (M3 Step 1.5) from regular Super GT. ;)
@VideoGameEsoterica
@VideoGameEsoterica Жыл бұрын
You can always drill back the epoxy a bit and solder to what’s left of the pin and jump it back into circuit by taking a bit of solder mask off the board where the leg would socket into it :)

@@VideoGameEsoterica I think the problem with Sega Rally 2 on DC is that it was a PC port. Just looking at Daytona 2001 on DC and that shows you what should of been done. @@VideoGameEsoterica So true. It's like Daytona 1.5 ( although I guess you could say the same about the second Saturn Daytona game ). @greyfox1127
@greyfox1127 Жыл бұрын
@@robsmall6466 Agreed - Daytona USA 2001 is an odd one. Kind of like a remix in some ways. As you say - like CCE - it loses some of the DNA but is still an excellent game. Still love the handling of the original Saturn port of Daytona but obviously graphically it struggles a little. I think the Sega Rally 2 port on Dreamcast suffers from the things both of you mentioned - it's using Windows CE which always seems to bottleneck the system somewhat, it was meant to be a launch game which always has an impact as the hardware & dev kits are rarely finalised plus a few other factors. Still plays well but I meant compared to the majesty of the port of the original to the Saturn (i.e. that it was WAY beyond what anyone thought might be possible after the initial games on the system) it was always going to be a bit of a let down. As an aside I always thought Sega missed a bit of trick in terms of releasing a Saturn exclusive follow up to Sega Rally Championship 95. For example in late 97 they could have released a game using the exact same engine, with some new tracks, maybe some additional vehicles and maybe a career mode. Call it something like Sega Saturn Rally Championship. With the bulk of the engine development sorted this would have been easier to develop than a whole new game and could have sold well to Saturn owners still playing the original game. Maybe even have it so you could import ghost times etc from the original. As a further aside can anyone think of a bigger leap in development/getting to grips with the hardware than when the Big 3 releases by Sega that Christmas - VF2, Sega Rally & Virtua Cop? Massive step uup from earlier releases in terms of graphical complexity, fidelity, frame rate, responsiveness & overall package. They all showed the Saturn was more than capable of competing against the other systems when it came to 3D.

Nice review! I think you've totally nailed my biggest disappointment with the Dreamcast version with the use of Windows CE - the fact that although the Dreamcast couldn't match the Model 3, we could've got a version that looked soooo much better. The crappy frame rate, drab colours and poor draw distance really make it feel like a substandard port. You only need to look at DC Daytona USA (60fps, no draw distance, bright and colourful, nice specular lighting effects on the cars) to see just how much better it could've been.

Still slightly dreary graphics with a bit of a noticeable draw distance going on, but slightly higher res graphics and a consistently smooth 60fps. Oh yeah, what a gem of a game ! Only thing I don't agree here is that I do think this would've been possible on original Xbox. The track and environment are really well done and hi poly, but when it comes to cars, I'm pretty sure something like PGR2 are more detailed vehicles, so I don't think you'd have to wait for 360 to port it. Wonder what the original resolution it was on Model 3 ? But I do think it would be possible on OG Xbox !

Agree. Honestly I've scrubbed around the video multiple times, and I'm really not seeing what's so amazing looking about it. Except for resolution, it's far, FAR away from an xbox 360 game. People would be happy to have it on the 360 for the gameplay, but definitely not for the graphics. I would argue that Rallysport challenge on the original XBox looks fairly comparable in the polygonal and texture detail department, but has much superior lighting, which really doesn't seem to be the model 3's strength. Hell, even the rally stages of Gran Turismo 4 on the old ps2 look better overall (except for resolution ofc), even if technically it might have less detailed models and textures.

Excellent game. I think OG Sega Rally is my favorite arcade racing game. I found SR 2 easier and I prefer the handling of SR1, but even so it's a great follow-up. @AaronPaden
@AaronPaden Жыл бұрын
@@VideoGameEsoterica well one kind of "bit rot" besides data corruption is where the platform itself changes and a dead project can't adapt to them and any kind of weirdness results. That kind of thing is inevitable with any kind of closed source project that no longer gets updated and it's expected to run on new revisions of a platform. It's nothing too major right now for M2. But it's a kind of slow death that happens over decades. Windows has very good backwards compatibility, but it isn't perfect. For a relevant example, any GPU workarounds that might have been written at the time may not be relevant in the current year. I may be misremembering, but I believe there were some for the AMD (ATI? I'm fuzzy on the timeline) at the time. ATI especially had notoriously bad OpenGL driver quality, and AMD inherited that. Today, the situation isn't so dire for AMD (especially on Linux) but I get pretty terrible z-fighting with m2 on AMD hardware on hotd. I'm betting that wouldn't be the case if the M2 emulator were alive and could still adapt to changing conditions.

I had to go check the Model 3's spec sheets again, and it is in fact not as powerful as Naomi/DC. I'm not sure where the interwebs gets these ideas, but even Moore's Law dictates Naomi should be more capable, and it is by at least three times as many texture mapped, lit, polys per second. 640x480 is the highest resolution for both, but the PowerVR DC can and has rendered internally above that and output at standard def for anti aliasing. Sega Rally 2 was just a WinCE port, DC launch games showed more of what the system could do at a solid framerate.

I think there is a lot of rose colored glasses to the Model 3 original that emulation is making worse. In my mind Super GT had no aliasing anywhere and everything was perfect too. The same thing happened with Daytona USA, nobody even mentioned the draw distance issues. That said, SR2 on Dreamcast wasn't great to begin with, it was adequate and a tech demo for online play (in Japan). -edit- Cheers though, this video caused me to play SR2 for the rest of the evening, on Dreamcast with my new to me Extron 1N508 upscaler and my Zenith Presentation CRT. What a blast from the past that was, I barely noticed the stuttering. But I've been doing a lot of testing on Win98SE and 1999 hardware and earlier, where even if it peaks over 100FPS stutter is still visible (despite interweb claims to the contrary).

While NAOMI wasn't really as powerful as Model 3 Step 2, the difference in price was massive: NAOMI boards were about $1995 while Model 3 Step 1 was around $20000. Dreamcast was a bit slower than NAOMI however and as you mentioned, WinCE didn't do it any favours. One fancy characteristic of the PowerVR2 GPU was its ability to render compressed textures on the fly but it came with a color quality cost. It doesn't seem that the SR2 Dreamcast developers accounted for this.

To add my uninformed opinion of the lighting query, I noticed that seemingly all model2/3 games use full-bright textures and hard shadows. I suspect that for all the model3's polygon pushing grunt it couldn't do gouraud shading and texturing simultaneously? What lighting there is seems to be baked into the textures. One of the PowerVR's headline features and what reviewers talked about back in the PC add-in card days was its ability to do "lighting" which typically meant blending gouraud shaded polygons for vertex lighting with texturing + fog in a single operation. Like so many devs the DC porting team probably looked at all these options for fancy rendering and couldn't help themselves, telling the boss it would "look better" (and possibly run slower...)

It's got that pretty high end DirectX 9 look and this is based off of hardware that originally came out in 1996 which is crazy. I think the N64 could have pulled off the Ultra games more accurately especially KI 1 and 2 if it had 8 megs of ram natively and also had a slot in the pack to pop in hard drive based games like what KI needed to function properly. I would have much rather paid for a perfect port of KI 1 using a harddisk for 150 bucks then a shitty remix of KI 2 for 80 bucks. well shitty visually compared to the arcade.

Unpopular opinion : I prefer Sega Rally 3 over the two previous episodes 😅 This one also suffers from an hazardous port and is still unique and fun to play now. But I am french, therefore during the Sega Rally 2 era we were under V-Rally 2 propaganda which was developped locally and pushed SR2 out of the console realm from there. Regarding the Model 3 vs Dreamcast/Naomi hardware specs theoretical battle I think you are mistaken, althought in the case of Sega Rally 2 the Dreamcast didn't win much. The Dreamcast version could have theorically caught up with the Model 3 version but I believe everyone is missing out on the benefits added to the Windows (DirectX) port. And I would not recommend trying this game on the Model3 emulator yet as it seems to lack of several graphical effects such as fog and shadows compared to real hardware. One thing I never see mentionned are the exclusive dynamic lights only appearing on the Dreamcast/Windows version which could be seen when the rear lights turns on or a fire popping off the exhaust. And since the shadows looks so much different there might be several other graphical benefits that we don't truly notice since the artistic direction given to those new effects didnt translate well into this Sega Rally 2 port/PortOfaPort/upgrade/downgrade/bewilderment. I believe in that time every SEGA studios were asked to make full use of every single new hardware accelerated graphical features which is why we saw some drammatic changes in the lighting system on the Sega Rally 2 port or even the Daytona USA 2001 port where they irrationally tried to implement every single new features the Dreamcast boasts compared to the classic version. Rieko Kodama once said in an interview about Skies of Arcadia that her boss told her to use transparency as much as they could since the Sega Saturn has been humiliated by the Playstation in that field given the Saturn didn't have this graphical feature so I can only imagine the amount of requests other SEGA devs were given around that time. The Model 3 vs Katana/Dreamcast/Naomi topic deserves an entire investigation on its own as comparisons between the two hardwares are not that easy. The Dreamcast relies on smart hardware accelerated graphical features while the Model 3 lacks of most of these things and relies on bigger RAM chips as well as raw compute power instead. It got better with time which was proven by the Virtua Fighter 3 port or Fighting Vipers 2's port looking nearly arcade perfect while the Soul Calibur Dreamcast Port/Upgrade has had enough time to aprehend this new hardware to then outshine both its own arcade version and Model 3's Fighting Vipers 2 version as well on a technical standpoint.
