The Sega SG-1000 and SG-1000 Mk II were released in Japan around the same time as the Famicom (Nintendo NES) and were the predecessor to the infamous Sega Master System. Here, I take a look at the console, the hardware, software, as well as the back story in creating this epic piece of gaming history.

That music station game with digital music on it is MIND BLOWING since the psg chip was never designed for digital sound,but someone dit come along saw the psg chip and discovered that digital sound becomes possible by combining all 4 soundchannels together and then quickly alternating the volume of it to shape a waveform,allowing to play 1bit pcm samples.

All the time I had an original Master System I never even knew you could get Sega Card games. I thought it was a memory card slot and that's why I had to restart games every time. Back then completing a game meant playing it umpteen times, until you were an expert at getting through every level with minimal lives lost, as some games would make you start all over again. Kids today don't know how lucky they are :D

Did Sega do better in Europe in general? I had almost every Sega system in the 90s, but they are largely seen as a one hit wonder who couldn't break past their one hit here in the US. The Genesis is the best accomplishment of theirs here. I personally loved the Saturn and Dreamcast though. I still have my Dreamcast.
@CanuckGod
@CanuckGod 5 жыл бұрын
It seems it was a larger part of their console market there - mind you, that was a smaller percentage overall than it was here in North America due to their preference for microcomputers, but still... As far as here in Canada, we tended to follow our US brethren south of the border in terms of opting for game consoles; in my case I had the NES and SNES, but never the Genesis or any other Sega product prior to the Dreamcast, and like you I still have my Dreamcast (in storage), and it still works fine :)

Yes Sega Master System and Mega Drive dominated the markets in Europe, South America and Oceania. Nintendo in these regions was a minority. I grew up Oceania (new Zealand) and to go to the video store for example for game rentals, there'd be about 30 Nintendo games and 150+ Sega games on the shelves. Shops were the same. Yet just like everywhere else in the world, Sega making huge mistakes in the mid 90's and the rise of PlayStation killed off Sega in our regions, and the N64 ended up in 2nd place ahead of the Saturn in the end

It's not so much that the carts were too big, but rather that they were too THIN. While the cartridge is taller, the Sega 8-bit consoles (SG1000, Mark III) use a 44-pin cartridge slot in Japan, whereas western Master Systems are 50-pin.
@mspenrice
@mspenrice 6 жыл бұрын
Does that mean much for the capabilities? I mean, you might expect that'd lead to perhaps a 64x difference in address range, or maybe 16x addressing difference and the presence/absence of an auxiliary audio line for any additional soundchip that might be in the cartridge, something like that. But either way that's a pretty extreme expansion of cartridge capacity (which presumably the mk3 would get around using bankswitching), particularly when you consider that in all cases the Sega Cards were considered a more limited medium because they only held 32kb... So that would mean a minimum of 64kb for any of the cartridges, and that then expands to 1mbyte or even 4mbyte with the MS, which is just silly. So were they just additional ground lines for nothing more than regional lockout, maybe?

Noting one thing, China was banning all video games until the late 90s, along with a lot of countries that added taxes to the consoles as entertainment systems, so Sega's adding a clumsy keyboard was actually a smart move, because selling them as "educational" meant they could get into all of those markets without paying tariffs or being blocked altogether.

What piques my curiosity is the decision to print the advertising blurb actually on the console itself. It's as if one day you might forget what it's for or why you bought it, take a quick peek at this precis to refresh your memory and then carry on shooting aliens or whatever with renewed vigour. Was it aimed at Alzheimer's patients? I suppose it would have been quite helpful at car boot sales, though I noticed Sega moved away from this approach with their later models, and now it's unheard of with modern computers and consoles.

Horzuhammer Just about. As far as early arcade-style games go, H.E.R.O and Flicky are fun enough. No one's going to accuse them of being Robotron 2084, but it's definitely a fun enough way to piss away a moment or two. Honestly, I'm surprised we don't see Atari collections on the vita and 3DS. I think those games would work DAMN well on handheld.

It's quite remarkable how many systems were built around that same general chipset - the low cost of the Z80 plus the TMS9918 being the first real ready-made all-in-one video chip to come on the market (and if you're going to get that video chip, then why not the matching sound chip, which does essentially the same as an AY-3-8910 but comes as a cheaper bundle deal...) meant that the combination is a pretty common one for computers and consoles of that general time period. Want to make a computer? Just grab those three chips, a bit of RAM, maybe some ROM, some method of providing user input, an RF modulator and a ULA to glue everything together, and you're pretty much done bar drawing the motherboard PCB mask. The fact that it was the basis for the original MSX standard didn't hurt, either. (NB, the 9918 and 9928 are identical in all but one regard - one produces NTSC composite output, the other PAL/SECAM component; so if your system has a 9928 in it, it's specifically a 50hz model...) The SG1000 isn't _entirely_ a Colecovision clone... it has more memory and can use higher capacity cartridges, for just two differences. However, they're close enough in spec that it's not that difficult to port games between them, and I've heard it suggested that the Mark 3 / Master System is essentially the "Colecovision 2" that never got the chance to happen thanks to the Adam debacle... (though maybe more like a "1.5"; a real Coleco successor would probably have more closely followed the MSX2 standard and included the Yamaha-developed V9938 video chip that offers capabilities somewhere between that of the Master System and the Megadrive... Sega broke away from the off-the-peg industry standard model with their third home machine and started making various proprietary upgrades instead. Though oddly enough the FM chip included in Japanese "actual" Master Systems is the same as that used in the MSX2 Audio standard...)

Thanks for the video. To confirm your "I think?" Comment, yes, the connector next to ear and mic is, as the manual states, SP-400 Printer Connector. The early 80s had a drop in arcade use? Are you out of your mind? Arcades really didn't start shrinking until the late 80s early 90s. Ironically, it was largely the success and technical improvement of the home consoles which really hit the arcades hard. In 1985, there were probably at least 10 arcades that I knew of in my city as well as games in every 7-11, bowling alley and even supermarkets. They were everywhere.

It probably depends on how flexible your TV is. Luckily it seems to turn out that most PAL region TVs are actually NTSC ones that have a little bit of additional hardware bodged on to accept the 50hz / 625 line signal and the higher frequency / phase alternating colour encoding _on top of_ the 60hz/525 line and basic colour signal they were originally designed for, so have little trouble dealing with foreign inputs. Though there are a few where the conversion was somewhat more total, like a CRT set we had which was perfectly fine with 60hz signals but it had to be _PAL_ 60 (as thankfully produced by our modded PSX, but _not_ from either US VHS tapes nor my ancient breeze-block DVD player when set to NTSC mode) unless you were happy watching a black and white image with lots of sharp pinstriping artefacts continually scrolling across... NTSC sets more often seem to be built simply to receive 60hz and basic colour, so you're much less likely to be able to get a PAL system working with them. In this case, if NN's machine has a TMS9928 in it, rather than the more usual TMS9918, it's a proper rarity - a Sega Mk1 that was either factory-built for sale in PAL/SECAM regions, or has been modified after the fact by an importer. The two chips are pretty much code and pin compatible, you can just unsolder one and put the other in its place and the computer/console will carry on as if nothing has changed... just now it'll be making 50hz/625 line output instead of 60hz/525 line (totally transparent to the rest of the system, as the TMS chips were essentially graphics co-processors that received commands from the CPU then built the image on-screen all by themselves), and you'll have to perform a minimal bit of leg snipping/jumper wiring to the replacement modulator as the 9918 emitted ready-made composite video on a single pin, but the 9928 produces ... eh, something else. The document I saw about it wasn't entirely clear if it was full composite (IE three pins - luma, red/green chroma and yellow-blue chroma) or something analogous to S-video (two pins - luma and perpendicular-phase combined chroma), but in any case there's at least one extra signal coming out intended for the modulator. Possibly if Sega were smart they'd have included (a) trace(s) for the additional signal(s) on the PCB but only soldered them to those legs (if they were even present on the 9918 / the composite-input NTSC modulator) in the PAL/SECAM models, which would make both the factory work and any aftermarket conversion much easier.

The Sega Mark III is a GORGEOUS looking system, however it has so many shortcomings compared to the U.S. released Master System that I just can't justify picking one up. There's compatibility issues even with a Cart adapter, and it requires a mod to get RGB, and even has the infamous Jailbars after doing said mod. No thanks. If I bought one it would just collect dust.

I'm not sure you can do that. I think the MS had backward compatibility, but the Megadrive missed out

+Nostalgia Nerd i have Power Base Convertor for Mega Drive to play Master System games, in japan it was called Mega Adaptor, so maybe it is possible. could be really funny experience.

You can't. While the Genesis/MD has backwards compatibility with the Master System, the SG-1000 stuff ran at a lower video mode than what the Genesis/MD did and thus could not be played.

I think you ment Gibson SG...and why do you STILL say "Nezz"?? No one says that except you. Did you come up with it? Or was it something you guys thought was cool, and its just stuck?

It's a British thing. But Americans mispronounce the name 'Lars' as 'Larz', so it's a matter of the pot calling the kettel black.

@TerryBollea1 I apologize. I was unaware that you were a cranky old fart. I mean, you MUST be pretty old to call someone who's almost 30 'son', but I suppose your ignorance and close-mindedness should have been enough to make your elderly status apparent to me. And clearly trying to tell an old man "S being pronounced as a Z is the same as S being pronounced as a Z" is about as futile as trying to tell an old man that Mexicans speak Spanish, not "Mexican".

Eh, I was quite old before I realised it was short for "mike", as in microphone. If you read it phonetically without any comprehension of what the abbreviation expands into, it's easily done.
@gwenynorisu6883

What he's alluding to is that, at least in English, the name of the device has a long "i" sound. As in Mike, rather than Mick, if you follow me. So although the abbreviated "MIC" seems like it should be said with the short vowel, it's actually meant to have a long one. Of course, if you're young and don't actually know what it's an abbreviation for, it's just ... "Mick". And in other countries, like your own I would suppose, it's said with a short vowel even in the full word, so the difference just doesn't exist and the question is lost on you ;)

So the claim that the inferior console always win is debunked in this video because the NES was more powerful than the SG-1000 and the SNES is more powerful than the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Interesting stuff!
