During the 1980's and 1990's, Sega's Super Scaler arcade technology produced some of their most beloved games. It was 3D before polygons, and Sega would try and bring them home a number of times. In this video, we will be looking at their Super Scalers for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive platform.

There is a great one on the 3ds... and it has power drift, thunder blade afterburner, and then of coarse some genesis games... but they are spot on and the 3D effect is amazing on these games... it’s worth picking up a 3ds just for this game.. it is something to see

Definitely a frustrating mix of great games trying to run with one hand tied behind their backs. I wish the 32X had gotten more super scaler ports. What did come out on it tended to be great, like Space Harrier... Super Thunderblade on 32X might've been something to behold.

I bought the 32X hoping for those arcade ports. And the ones we got were exactly what I wanted. Just imagine what the 32X would have been if those Sega super scalers and arcade games like Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder would have done for that simple little era in sega history

It is of course rather bizzare that Sega never bothered to port some of these to the MegaCD , the scaling hardware would have helped the games look and feel a little more like the arcade. I do wonder why Power Drift never made it to the Mega Drive.

I agree that bad games shouldn't exist. but what I was saying was that they should have used the more powerful hardware capabilities of the system to push better games. Just because Afterburner 3 was pure trash, doesn't mean that Sega couldn't have given us a better version. Hell, nowadays Im just more pissed off that Sega doesn't release a compilation of their classic arcade super scalers. its cause of those arcade games I chose to stick with Sega for so long.

When I was in Jr High 1990, I used to go to an arcade called PGN. They had GALAXY FORCE II in it's full rotating sit-down cabinet. I used to bring a set of headphones in and play GF2 all day long. There was nothing like it like any other game I've played before. Outrun, and Space Harrier were good, but GF2 really solidified SEGA as a memory in my mind. There was nothing like seeing and sitting down in a full-size cabinet. I must have spent well over $100 in tokens playing these games. Eventually I got a job at that arcade, and I was able to play it almost every day. It felt like i owned it at times. Later on when the Genesis port came out, I was just as disappointed in the quality of the release, but I played it anyway. It was the closest thing we had at the time in the home. Lots of the arcade ports felt watered down, but in the end, the game was STILL there. Us 90s kids just kinda dealt with what we had. Once again, AMAZING CONTENT! Keep up the great videos!

Still, when you compare the 16 bit arcade ports to most 8 bit home ports of arcade games, they were far closer to the arcade experience. Though with things like the SuperScalar hardware, where it was absolutely cutting edge at the time, any home port to a commodity console was bound to be disappointing.

Why the Genesis didn't come with scaling and rotation technology was beyond me. This is what I wanted most. I remember someone telling me, via KZfaq, that Sega initially wanted to do this, however, that meant the couldn't include the Z-80 processor into their home system to play old Sega Master System games. It didn't make any sense, for me, simply because Sega was all about technology due to their arcade division.

Maybe it was intentional as in they still wanted the arcades to be better so gamers would still want to go to the arcades on occasion so they could play the superior version. If they made arcade perfect ports then arcades would go out of business, just my thoughts

G-Loc's hook in the arcade was that it was featured on Sega's R360 hardware, this a massive arcade machine that let you do actual barrel rolls, vertical loops, and even fly upside if so inclined ( keep an eye on the contents of your pockets)., there a big "make the ride stop" button for those that were affected. The home version couldn't replicate this part of the experience.

What strikes me most here is just how good these super scaler arcade games looked and how well they aged compared to early polygonal 3D efforts, especially the home console ones. Unfortunately, I never seen any of them in the wild when I was growing up. They would have made quite an impression. It's a crime that Sega didn't do any proper Sega-CD ports using its scaling and rotation hardware. 32X seemed perfect for the job too. I did own and enjoy Space Harrier and Afterburner Complete on that system. Just wish that there were more. What's the best way to play some of the most obscure super scaler games such as Galaxy Force right now? Have they even been re-released on anything recent or even well-emulated on PC at this point?

The base interiors could be difficult to navigate because there was so much on screen that at times if was hard to see where you were going, but the stereoscopic effect on the 3DS literally opens up a whole new dimension to the gameplay, making it far more enjoyable to play.

80% of the fun of most of these games was the top quality custom cabinets they sat in. I've never actually seen a Space Harrier cabinet. Lots of Out-Run/Turbo Out-Run, Hang-On/Super Hang-On, AfterBurner, ThunderBlade, Galaxy Force etc, but never a Space Harrier. I didn't even know what the real arcade version looked like for years, as all I had back in the day was the Master System version, and later on the TurboGrafx-16 and then 32X(that version is close, but not quite arcade perfect). I didn't see or play the arcade version until the mid 2000's when I got into emulation, and had a computer fast enough to run it in MAME. That was also the moment I realized that the game I had been playing on consoles for 15-20 years actually had analog controls. Sadly I'll probably never get an opportunity to play a real sit-down arcade version of it.

Galaxy Force II and Space Harrier II are my favourite games on Sega Genesis collection for Nintendo Switch....Their gameplay, graphics and sound stand out......say what you will about them not being arcade perfect-about their issues, they are fun....

Am I the only one here who would love to see a SEGA Arcade Collection of their classic 80's & 90's games for modern platforms? Add a front-end where you can play as Ryo Hazuki walking around a 3D arcade where you can meticulously examine 3D versions of SEGA arcade cabinets, artwork, flyers & read up on their history, background music & you got yourself the best SEGA arcade collection ever on a games platform. You could even interact w/3D versions of other SEGA characters, like Jack & Sarah Bryant & play a 3D-modeled UFO Catcher to win toys based on SEGA characters you can collect, much like in Shenmue. What else would you love to see in such a game if SEGA were to make it?

Even though it wasn't developed by SEGA, there was Outlander. It was a bit clunky and the out of car levels could have done with a massive rework but otherwise it felt fast and the enemies were fun to fight.

I am more forgiving for most of these. I remember renting galaxy force on the genesis and being horribly disappointed. however I bought cheap later on and forced myself to play and finish the game. I grew on me a bit. yes it could have been much better and was lazy, but not the worst game I have ever played. you should do the master system super scaler series, if want to talk about comprises. lol great video and great memories! !!

Man! Even from here I can see and feel the choppiness of some of these ports. Mmmmm... so, the transparency problem wasn't a saturn exclusive thing uh?

@Sega Lord X - Since you did arcade to Sega comparisons in this video, I would like to know from your point of view on who did it better when it came to Street Fighter 2. Who had the better arcade port, Genesis or Super Nintendo?
@SegaLordX
@SegaLordX 4 жыл бұрын
I break down the 16-bit Street Fighter 2 ports into categories. SNES version had the best sound effects and the better colors on the characters. I preferred the Genesis backgrounds and some of the Genesis music, though. Both versions played really strong. The PC Engine version was really good too for the time. Only its lack of parallax and missing environment detail is a bummer.

@@SegaLordX I see. I think Sega had the better music because it's much closer to the arcade than Super Nintendo. It also had the option of making the game faster or slower than usual, special move disablement. What I liked about the Super Nintendo version was that on some of the stages was that the clouds or moon would move.

Yep, Super Thunder Blade on the Genesis is definitely a piss-poor port. Frustrating and choppy, I forced myself to play through the first stage to unlock I think the arcade version of Altered Beast in the "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection", but never played it again after that.

ok, attempting to "port" Galaxy Force II to the genesis/megadrive should have been a sign that things were not going to end well for SEGA corp. we should have seen it coming! lol

super hang on is one of my favourite games on the system and my favourite motorcycle game of all time. and i like space harrier 2 more than the original arcade version. the scaling might not be there but the colour and visuals of harrier 2 come on top imo. tunderblade and G lock was decent as well

Space Harrier on the Master System is the definitive home version
@homiedclown

It's choppy AF, runs slower, the graphics have those solid blocks of color around them because they were background elements and not sprites. There are a lot of compromises in that port, but I agree with your sentiment. It captured the feel of the arcade version beautifully, and I played that version to death. I played it so much that I could beat it without dying. When I finally did get a chance to play the 32X and then Arcade versions, I actually preferred the Master System version as I thought the "better" versions of the game just didn't have the same charm.

What's your opinion of OutRun 2019? While not based on an arcade title, it was made by the same developers who ported the original OutRun, using their same code as a base for the game.

@Juanknes
@Juanknes 5 жыл бұрын
Mode 7 of SNES looks great, but it's only a single bitmap at once. The Genesis was a faster system for most pseudo 3D effects. But you needed a Saturn for Super Scaler graphics at home (Outrun and Space Harrier ports are amazing).
