The lyrics of this song are a poem written by Friedrich Emil Rittershaus (1834 - 1897) during the Romantic era. It was published under the name "Meeresfantasie" (Sea Fantasy) in the anthology "Die Träume der Toten" (The Dreams of the Dead). The composition is from Wolfnacht's "Soldatenlieder"
