Sehzade Cihangir is the youngest son of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his legal wife Hurrem Sultan. He was born in December 1531 and from childhood did not pose any danger to either his father or his brothers, since he had a congenital pathology - a hump. Having such a disease, he could not claim the Ottoman throne.
In the modern world, this disease is called spinal kyphosis.
The Sultan invited many doctors to cure his son, but in those days it was impossible. There is an assumption that Jihangir underwent spinal traction at a young age.
The treatment helped Jihangir. The pain left him for some time, and he began to grow more intensively. However, it was never possible to completely get rid of the disease, and all his life Jihangir suffered from severe back pain.
Also preserved is a letter from Hurrem to the Sultan, where she rejoices at another successful operation performed on the child’s shoulder.
Due to his illness, Jihangir could not ride a horse, shoot or practice saber fighting, so the boy grew up physically weak.
But, despite his pathology, Jihangir received exactly the same comprehensive education as his older brothers. He was fond of calligraphy and wrote poetry under the name Zarifi, which means “elegant” in Turkish.
Suleiman loved his youngest son very much and from childhood he took him with him on trips and military campaigns.
The harem archive notes that in 1539, at the age of 8, Jihangir and his older brother Bayazid were circumcised. This event was combined with the wedding of Mihrimah and Rustem Pasha. The celebrations in the capital lasted about 15 days.
In 1547, Cihangir and his mother went to Manisa to visit their elder brother Selim and spent a month there.
In 1548, Cihangir accompanied his father on an Iranian military campaign.
In 1549, Cihangir was appointed to the post of sanjak bey of Aleppo. It was an important province for the country and the third largest province in the Ottoman Empire. This significant fact indicates that Sultan Suleiman trusted his youngest son and had high hopes for him.
Shehzade handled his administrative responsibilities very well. The province entrusted to him was going through hard times, being significantly “battered” after the clashes between the Ottoman Empire and the Mamluks.
During his few years in office, Cihangir achieved significant success by focusing his efforts on economic recovery. The decisions he made contributed to the development of not only the city of Aleppo itself, but also the entire region. In such a short period of time, he was able to earn the love and respect of the inhabitants of the province, who spoke of him as a wise and competent ruler.
By the time he moved to Allepo, Jihangir already had his own harem and at least a favorite favorite. Unfortunately, her name has not been preserved in history. Also, some sources report that she gave birth to his son, but there is no written confirmation on this topic.
Cihangir died on November 27, 1553 at the age of less than 22 years. The reason for his sudden death is still a mystery to historians.
Basically, two versions are considered:
First: Cihangir died of a nervous breakdown after the execution of his brother Mustafa. But this is unlikely. Mustafa left for his sanjak when Jihangir was only 2 years old. They met on holidays and on military campaigns, but they were unlikely to be close.
According to another version, he died from the consequences of his illness. Constant aching pain in the back, numbness in the legs, and general weakness exhausted the guy. There is information that Jihangir promoted opium. This was the only way to get rid of the pain, at least for a while.
After his death, Cihangir's body was transported to Istanbul and buried in the Sehzade Mosque next to Sehzade's older brother Mehmed.
In 1559, by order of Sultan Suleiman, a mosque was built by the famous architect Sinan in memory of his youngest son. This area began to bear the name Jihangir. Now this is one of the most prestigious areas of Istanbul. From its peaks there are beautiful panoramas of the Bosphorus Strait and the Golden Horn.
