Thank you for this important video. Now I know that when I send my watches in for service and regulation, I must tell the watchmaker that I wear my watch on my RIGHT wrist. That way he will focus on the CROWN UP position, vice the crown down with left wrist wearers. That is if he even has a timegrapher.

My white Alpinist was all over the place when I bought it, it went -90 seconds per day in some positions, to +50 at others and sometimes it changed from minus to plus while being in one position only. I tried to regulate it, it was difficult as the leaver was not very precise so it took two weeks to get some results, then I let it go and forgot about it. After a month or so I checked again and it was at 0 seconds per week literally, then someone told me the movements should break in like shoes. This was still hard to believe, but now after 6 months it still runs few seconds per day although I pushed down my OCD and stopped checking it. Not sure what to think, subjectively all my Orients were much easier to regulate and those oscillations are not as pronounced.

At 6:22 in this vid you are getting exactly what I get with my Alpinist 6R35 if left on the wrist all day and even when sleeping - absolute perfection over 10 days of manual measurement, fluctuating either way daily by a couple of seconds, but arriving back to an overall ten day average of zero seconds per day. If I lay it face up overnight it drops to plus 6 or 7 seconds daily, which I am still happy with.

My 6R35, which is inside a year-old, $1200 Seiko diver, had such outstandingly poor spd and amp, I sent it back to Seiko's authorized repair centre for regulation while still under warranty. Losing close to a minute a day in a watch that's been well-care-for is completely off the charts. In years of wearing Swiss ETA or Sellita movements, even older ones, I've never experienced anything remotely as poor performance-wise as the 6R35 both on my Timegrapher and my wrist. For those with excellent 6R35 stats, that's great..you're lucky. But from what I'm now reading about Seiko movements and the discouraging volume of complaints about their lack of reliability and sub-par performance, which accords fully with my own experience, I'd be very reluctant to consider another Seiko purchase. While I certainly didn't expect COSC standards, I fault myself in that Seiko's published performance specs for 6R35 of -10/+25 spd should have been my first clue.

Yes these movements are based off a 70's ebauche seiko design, that had a sole purpose to be mass produced and economical. If you are used to swiss and want a Seiko the 6L which is more like a 2892 in terms of performance, quality, and engineering.

I admire the ETAs and Sellitas, always consistent on the timegrapher with a good amplitude and very less positional variation. All my Seikos on the other hand are always all over the place but the beauty of the dial and cases cannot be compared. My Longines Hydroconquest beats my 114060 hands down in both amplitude and positional accuracy, and the worst part is that I cannot regulate the Submariner myself.

Can someone explain to me why it is that my 6R35 equipped Willard consistently loses about 10 seconds per 24 hours at weekends and holidays when I'm not working, but at all other times when I'm at work it goes to +2 and sometimes zero. I do have quite a manually intensive job where I'm on the go all the time but why would that make such a dramatic difference.
@EscapementWatch
@EscapementWatch 2 жыл бұрын
Each position of your watch will give different results. So the positional accuracy is weak in your watch's case. You're going to have to figure out when you're doing your job. Is the watch pointed 12 down most of the time? Maybe when you store your watch place it 12 facing south and it might maintain the same numbers. Try that out

@EscapementWatch
@EscapementWatch 3 жыл бұрын
amplitude is just an indicator of the efficiency of the kinematic drive train of the gears. so strong amplitude means everything working well, don't need a service. when amp is too low or too high it can effect accuracy if the power is not being delivered evenly to the escapement.

@@EscapementWatch Thats too bad it does not have a screw as opposed to that lever held in place by friction. I dropped my Seiko and it went from +5spd to +20 spd. I have no doubt the shock of the drop probably moved that lever ever so slightly. That lever may explain the wide variation in accuracy. Drops during sports, shipping, and rough wear.

the issue with Seiko is "reliability". i regulated a 7s25 and 7s26 to +1 second per day wearing. but the performance wouldn't last more than two weeks.
@EscapementWatch
@EscapementWatch 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that could happen but I have had ultra reliable results with some movements keeping the exact same regulated time for over 6 months with very little drift even afterwards. Make sure the watch is fully broken in at least one month of consistent use before regulation and because it's regulated the friction sometimes a small bump or Nick can give it a little bit of a drift. But like all movements the accuracy will change over time more so on the entry level Seiko movements though.

@@EscapementWatch true. "over time lost accuracy for all mechanism things". For Seiko, my experience for 7s grade is 2 weeks, afterwards, i am just not bothered. I have two 7s for 17 years by now. More a jewelry than a time keep device to me. Also, I have been reading "modern" threads, the "good period" for even 8L grade (in marine master), is 6 months; and the SD is just disaster after 2 years. Seiko is clever commercial company, more of a fashion company (changing cases & dials & learn the Limited Edition trick from Omega), than a RnD tech nerd perusing tech perfection at low cost. Already Great commercial success already for the 7s, 4s, now 6s.

I've noticed my 6R35 movement runs a tad fast approx 18-22 seconds per day dial up. Seiko says thats within tolerance. I say YIKES that seems fast for a new upgraded caliber. Anyway I purchased a demagnetiser. I'm wondering if it got magnetised during shipping going through scan machines. I'll post an update.

@@DMRMOTORSPORT I had to regulate it. Runs approx 15 sec fast (which I'm happy with). I've also heard watches with a higher power power reserve can run faster.

I see they have improved movements, but are the newer models worth the asking price? Especially considering you could get the original alpinist for around 600 CAD? Now they have come out with SPB155, 157 and 159 which I hear are gonna cost around 1100 CAD!! (a reduced 38mm). Buying a Seiko is becoming more and more perplexing. But damn I love the brand

A KZfaq commentator once said his experience with Seiko movements is very hit and miss. Not reliable regarding out of the box performance, not dependable regarding constant performance. I'm tending to agree. To me your results were really bad. Minus 24 seconds for the new movement, going from plus 6. The thing that saves the movement is the fact the watch is always moving on the wrist. Poor really especially when you think how much the watches cost

When talking results at 13.20 you were swallowing as if you dont mean what you say. How is -24 and + 4. Better than the old alpine watch where you read -13 and +6. The ranges are smaller and your experience with 0 seconds off on your wrist. So how you mean, the 6r35 has improved? And amplitude sounds very interesting but its worthless as the time wise results were worse? I think i dont quite understand man. Is the 6r35 now better in accuracy on your wrist or? Your test result expressions are influenced to make 6r35 sound better as it is to just promote sales. You must be payed by seiko 😃. But good info and stats here. Stay honest dude 😂 wonderfull watches anyway

Seiko movements are so weak. So positioning sensible. A ETA is better if you regulate it. My ETA and Selittas run 1-2 in three days. Thats normal. The times a Seiko was about 450 Euro, was more realitistic compare to their performance. I don't see me to pay 1.000 Euros for one of their watches with this crap. And why the hell should somebody care about a 70 hour power reserve, it is useless. 38-45 are more than enough for a daily wearer.
