Nice review 👍 I’m the guy who actually coined the nick names “Ninja Tuna”, “Emperor Tuna” and “Bluefin Tuna” for the LE SBBN037 I used to own the Emperor Tuna SBDX011, Darth Tuna SBBN011 and a SBBN007. All of them are great but IMO 1000m Tuna’s sit too high on the wrist do to the very short L2L. Where as the 300m Tuna’s and the 600m SD Tuna’s are very comfortable to wear. Which brings me to the SBBN035. I’ll be ordering one very soon and looking forward to having a Ninja Tuna in my humble collection. I’m amazed at all the negative comments just because it a quartz. I’m pretty sure they would have heart attack if they priced Sinn’s UX series of quartz divers. Cheers Shannon aka Spring-Diver 😉

Awesome man, good to hear from you... yes I do remember reading that username Spring-Diver! :) Excellent point about the way the 1000m models sit actually, something that's difficult to appreciate without having had the watch in hand. Re: Quartz... yeah having done this for a while, I think there is often a bit of a reflex reaction against quartz, many can't or won't take the time to appreciate how excellent a quartz can me. Cheers! Ivan.

I just sold my SBBN031 which is the Stainless steel version on bracelet 3 days ago and I’m already thinking a re-buy! The watch is Iconic , true it’s rather large but at an actual 48mm all the way around it fits lots of wrists fine! Accurate to +/- 15 sec per month and torch like Lume! Also it is a strap monster, you can wear it on a single pass nato/Zulu on Rubber or steel and it is awesome. When I did wear it it’s the only watch I had tHat got comments and attention, great conversation starter . Enjoyed the review!

A brilliant review. I own lots of Seiko divers and it has taken me a while to fall in love with the tunas. Like many Seiko models the history behind them is fascinating. I’ll be buying a modern Tuna like this or the 1000m model. The original grandfather and golden tunas are magnificent. I’m currently looking for a good one but they are very hard to find.

you are not wrong in saying its not a DLC coating, the DLC coating is only found on the 1000m tunas. I took a damaged buckle from one of the 1000m tunas and tried to sand off the coating just for curiosity sake, the coating shredded the sandpaper instead. The black coating on the ninja is harder than the ion plating found on the recent save the ocean series but nowhere as durable as the DLC coat on the 1000m tunas. The bezel inserts on the 031 and 035 are both aluminium bezels, I heard they have a lacquer finish but I cannot confirm. With regards to the stainless steel insert, it is only found on the SBBN033. The darth tuna btw, is about 49.4mm diameter at the shroud when I measure mine. The quartz 1000m tunas also do not have drilled lugs whereas the 300m quartz tunas have. Which in my opinion, is a downgrade of sorts. The crystal on the 1000m tunas also sit below the bezel whereas the 300m tunas dome sits proud of the bezel, putting it in harms way.
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for clarifying the details - you obviously know quite a bit about this range! With regards to the Darth Tuna shroud diameter, that's curious to hear it's so different to the official source 52mm I got - did you measure the bottom edge of the shroud where it's widest? I do also feel that not having drilled lugs is a bit of a loss but the 1000m Tuna lug-less monocoque case design prevents that feature it would seem. Cheers, Ivan.

@CtFshd1812
@CtFshd1812 5 жыл бұрын
I did measure from the bottom edge as you mentioned, it came up 49.4mm on my calipers. The 52mm is for the automatic 1000m tunas. With regards to the drilled lugs, you might be right. The 1000m automatic tunas do have drilled lugs but they do have tiny lugs like the 300m tunas, maybe it really is a design limitation. Haha, I hail from singapore 😂

The Tuna shroud has the virtue of being distinctive enough so that even non watch aficionados can see the difference to other dive watches. Enough so that there is the Chinese knockoff Merkur "Ocean Master" that fixes the most typical Tuna complaints with sapphire and a Seiko automatic movement. The price tag even with a Hexad bracelet is only a third of the real deal.. I also have a Seiko Lowercase "Special Edition" in black, with a shroud and solar quartz engine. Even imported, price was about a third of the Tuna. Adding a black Engineer bracelet trimmed the bargain a bit. Yet it is the Seiko Kinetic SUN019 that gets the most wrist time from me. The shroud is different but beautifully machined. The automatic quartz movement is odd but very accurate. It came with sapphire and a factory bracelet a cut above the typical Seiko, probably for marketing reasons. Sill half the street price for a Tuna. The applied indexes lend a certain depth to the dial that this watch nerd likes very much. So, no Tuna in my future but it was fun to see the Ninja black version examined in detail. Thanks!

@PerthWAtch 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that - the SUN019 is a pretty watch indeed and one I would love to review if I ever get my hands on one. Haven't heard of Merker specifically but San Martin also do a nice homage, similar specs it would seem, maybe in fact from the same Chinese factory!

it seems like it is like "normal Seiko Divers" that ranges from $300 to $500. but this watch is more than double the pricing. Since this is just 300M and there isn't much of special designs (well except the Tuna casing design) or innovations, does it worth the double the pricing? (and just rubber bracelet really does not add any value to it either..... actually lessens it) would you feel that this is one of those Seiko's marketing watch to charge way more than it should? what is your honest opinion?
@PerthWAtch
@PerthWAtch 5 жыл бұрын
You're right in many respects... I think for this level of Seiko we are paying for the case design (with shroud), innovative gasket (so I read), and of course also provenance, branding & marketing. The movement also is possibly the best analog quartz movement with some real panache... looking at sourcing prices it's around the same cost as an ETA 2824 it seems. On a separate note, what a company should charge for its products is a debatable topic. From a pure company perspective, they should charge the price that maximizes profit... it is arguable that to do otherwise would be a disservice to shareholders.

Ah I think you're right about the intended packing position for the watch! However as for chance of scratching in the box, I think highly unlikely given it's made of cardboard and polyurethane covering. Ironically the intended position probably has a higher chance of scratching as it doesn't hold the watch firmly at all, and if the box was opened at an angle it could fall out!

The bigger the watch, the more expensive it should right? :) As for the looks, it's probably one of their most (if not THE most) divisive designs - those who like it then to love it, and those who don't tend to hate it. The value proposition is a mystery to me also, but here's some of what I wrote to another comment: I think for this level of Seiko we are paying for the case design (with shroud), innovative gasket (so I read), and of course also provenance, branding & marketing. The movement also is possibly the best analog quartz movement I have seen, with some real panache... looking at sourcing prices it's around the same cost as an ETA 2824 it seems.

@@PerthWAtch. If it had an ETA movement, a metal bracelet and a sapphire crystal it wouldn't be worth a grand. Even at that you can get a Swiss made diver with those specs. for under a grand. With the specs. this watch comes with, l wouldn't pay more than $450.00. The seiko name is held in the highest regards by some, not by me however, so no premium on the watch for having the seiko name on the dial.
