Richard Cavé (singer, songwriter, producer) digs deep on the importance of being multilingual. Although many Haitians are encouraged and taught to speak French, he makes a valid point: there are two billion people on this planet who speak Mandarin. Why aren’t we trying to communicate with them?

Just read the Histoire d Haiti : Manuel d Histoire d Haiti de J.C. Description: 402 pages illustrations (including portraits, maps, facsimiles, coats of arms) 20 cm"

It’s a class thing. A flex. If you speak French in Haiti that likely means you went to a private school which likely means your family had some coin. Ou pat malere. Personally, I get frustrated watching Haitian news and the shit is in French. Same when wanting to read articles. Banm bagay la nan kreyol, fwenk!

No, it is NOT a class thing. I went to private school Saint-Louis de Gonzague but my father was an elementary school teacher and was part of the lower class. You could have taken French as a second language at your high school .

I disagree with you two, guys, on French . French is spoken , was spoken , for more than 200 years in Haiti and all the documentary history of Haiti is in French. Moreover, you have a lot of Haitian diaspora who masters the french language ( Haitians studying and living in France AND Haitians studying and living in the province of Quebec in Canada who are medical doctors, engineers, university and high school teachers, etc ) Haiti only needs to stay a BIlingual country officially ( French and Haitian Creole), the same way that Jamaicans speak Jamaican patois and English. Do not forget French is also the language spoken and written in French-speaking Africa ( Senegal, Cote-d Ivoire, Gabon, Republique du Congo, Dahomey, etc.) by 116 millions ofAfricans in 31 countries. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afrique_francophone

Smdh, that's the thing that I will never understand about us Haitians. We go to unnecessary extremes and or maintain nonproductive habits. I understand that the Haitian education system doesn't do the best service by only teaching students memorization and not comprehension. Also the teachers who don't understand French all that well themselves teaching students who are busy translating whats being said and not fully understanding. Then Haiti needs to change the education system where they promote more comprehension and team work. I love that Haiti has 2 official languages. There are other nations where they have 2 or more official languages. In my youth, I used to be proficient in English, Creole, and French. When I had to go to school, they told my parents to only speak English with me, then I lost the Creole and French. I had to relearn Creole by mostly listening to it being spoken. Its not very strong, but I have a working knowledge of Creole, but difficulties when it comes to numbers. French, I have been trying to relearn for the past several years with no luck. Spanish is another language I would like to learn. With Spanish, I know a lot of the vocabulary, but problems forming a sentence. Richard Cave had done some songs in French and toured with Carimi in Francophone countries where I'm sure he had to use French. SeJoe has done some comedy in French and has toured in Francophone. When they were getting paid in those French speaking countries, I bet you they didn't say no to the money in Creole, they negotiated and said yes to the money in French. Some Haitians have a weird issue when it comes to French, and I'm not talking about the ones who think that they are elite because they speak French. Its these anti-French/Creole Only Haitians, when there are a decent amount of Haitians who do mostly use French to communicate in their personal lives. But these Haitians don't do it because there are elitist, but because they gravitate to the French language. I have cousins from Haiti who speak French 90% of the time, but they don't think they are better then anyone. French can be used to network and do business with other Francophones such as Martinique, French Guiana, St. Lucia, Morocco, Benin, Ivory Coast, Mali, Tunisia etc. We have a long way till Creole becomes the language of business and network.

@@HappyRoach1 Those Haitian-Americans who do NOT speak Creole , how are they going to communicate with the vast majority of Haitians . Moreover, even Jamaicans in their day-to-day living speak Jamaican patois, not the American English : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrR9YKV2md6lqaM.html
