Here is how you can record multiple tracks simultaneously into the GarageBand app on your iPad using a Zoom H5 recorder as a multi-track audio interface. Perfect portable solution for podcasting or recording any separate audio tracks at the same time.
While the Zoom H5 doesn't officially support multi-track recording while using an iPad, it seems to work just fine when connected as an audio interface.
This setup is completely portable and powered completely by a USB battery bank. The USB battery charges the iPad and powers the Zoom H5 (when you select bus power during setup).

Yes when most multi-track directly on the H5 or edit on the PC. I would imagine some do all their editing and music production on the iPad so it would suit them. Moving multi-track files from the H5 to the iPad would be a nightmare.

Well, this video is useful for me. I just received my H4n Pro hoping I could send output from inputs 1 & 2 *and* built-in microphones through the USB interface for video recording on iPhone but figured out H4n Pro has no multitrack option through USB, bummer :( it can only send either built-in mics or inputs 1&2. I wonder if the H5 is my option, do you guys know if the iPhone can accept multitrack output from the H5 for live video recording? Gary, thanks for the video where you covered so eloquently why you want to use USB interface and not line out with the H5 and iPhone, and how using editing software can be awfully painful (and reason why the Zoom H5 feels like gods sent) but your video didn't use multitrack option.

This was a useful video. How would this work on the newer iPad Pros that have a USB-C port? Would I just use a USB-C hub instead of the camera connection? Also would I be able to record FaceTime audio calls/skype calls for podcasting remotely with others? Thanks again!

I’m surprised that you’re able to connect the Zoom to the iPad via camera connection kit WITHOUT using a powered USB hub. Is that still the case? I won’t need to buy a powered USB hub?

What about just doing this to Livestream to Facebook or something? Could you do this with a Boom mic for ambient and have a Lav or hand mic combining via USB to the Livestream?

Think the R8 might be just a 2 in 2 out interface over USB whereas the H5 can be 4 in 2 out.

Do you know if it is possible to use the H5 as a external mic on the iPhone 7? I usually do some acoustic covers on Instagram and wanted to get a clear sound! I don’t have any professional câmera, so I intend to Record on the iPhone! I tried to Connect both with the lightning to headphone adapter....But it Seems that only works with the lightning to câmera USB adapter... is it right??? I also have a concern about the battery... im afraid of loosing power quickly on the iPhone when iam recording the vídeos... you Will save if you answer me, man!! The adapter is very expensive and i Will only buy this if its truly the only option to make it work....

Thanks for the video! I'm a seventeen year old film scorer from Berlin. I'm currently planing my Pacific Crest Trail hike. And instead of taking hundreds of photos I'm going to try and focus on sound - because I just feel it is so underrated. We don't want to just be reminded of the places we went, but actually get to go back there. And with sounds, whenever you feel like it you can put on your headphones and disappear. I want to record sounds I encounter on trail and add musical elements/ responses on top using a basic synth/ midi controller. Unfortunately I can't bring my Mac because that's WAY too heavy. Any tips on portable working setups. I have an iPad that I would like to use. Like I said, I want to record sounds (I'm looking into different tascam models) + process and edit them on an iPad Pro app (any suggestions?) and then bring along a very lightweight midi controller or synth to layer brief musical responses (for now, i'm thinking a seaboard - any other suggestions). Could such a setup work? I want a lot of artistic freedom without carrying something too heavy...

Thanks for your reply. Yes, latest iPad Pro. Mostly use it for scoring (Notation iOS app). And yes, I definitely am thinking it might be really smart to invest in a good Tacam/Zoom for the sounds. Any personal recommendations. (I know there's a lot of info out there on the different models and the purposes each serve). I'll check him out. ^^ :)

Hey Mahesh, the Zoom H5 used too much power for the iPad I was using at the time so the battery provides enough power to use it. Haven't tested the Zoom H5 with any of the iPad Pro's so I'm not sure if the battery is still required. Regardless, any 2 amp USB battery should work.

the battery pack was used to provide the ipad (adapter) with enough power to support the recorder. otherwise, you just get an error on the ipad that says the external device uses too much power. not sure if this is still required though and probably depends on the specific model ipad you are using

hey there great video. I see they don't have the double ipad/battery(iphone) holder in amazon but something close BUT what is the little part on the zoom that you are screwing into the iPad holder. What adapter is that? thanks so much.

awesome and sorry if i'm being stupid. So I ordered the same tripod you recommended and then a different ipad/battery holder but now if I put the adapter you mention on the zoom the hot shoe goes into where? does that piece you slide the adapter into come with the tripod? Thanks so much~~

nevinwebster the Zoom H4n Pro you can do that with. The H4n Pro is a 4 Channel Recorder. I use it with my iPad Air 2.

In order to do this do you need a power hub? Every time I try to connect my h4n pro to the iPhone via the lightning adapter the zoom turns off and prompts to connect again.

I recently tried to bundle L+R plus an additional microphone via input 1 and play them together via the audio interface (multitrack mode) to the PC via USB. It did not work, only the L+R channel is transmitted, although I heard both signals via headphones in the Zoom H5 and the leveling also worked perfectly. The necessary Windows driver was installed and displayed correctly. Does mixing 4 channels via USB not work at all? Or have I set something wrong? I just bought the Apple Adapter and the Cold Shoe Mount- Thank you. ONE LAST Question- I have 1 cable going from battery pack out 1 to zoom- to power it on. WHAT CABLE connects the zoom to apple adapter? and does it plug into out 2 or IN 1? Around 19 SEC mark- what are the TWO black cables?

Got it. The short lightning to usb cable for power bank to adapter is fine. Thanks. Now- the other cable that goes to adapter and zoom recorded- thats fine to- but what if the power bank was supposed to power the zoom? Or will it all power once the ipad is plugged in ( i could not test because i have a old ipad with old connected right now)

Oh sorry I was just speaking about the cable itself from the powerbank to the adapter, since the adapter is just with one usb and one lightning and the powerbank as well as the H5 are connecting with USB both?

I get a lot of latency with GarageBand, and I do not see any settings to change it... But, with Auria Pro it is fine

Aaron Putnam I have the last one 10,5” and it is really a problem with garageband if you want to use for example FX for the guitar, with auria pro I can use the Fabfilter plug in without latency

Aaron Putnam depends how many plug ins but i can record with the H6 4 tracks with fabfilter EQ and Hall withou noticed delay, under 10 ms

hrmm, not sure. are you running the latest version of iOS and is the H6 in USB mode?

Fotocred Fred ah ok. My bad. Lead wasn’t fully in. Strange now though I can select what input but doesn’t give me any levels. And nothing is recording. Just on the h6 levels show and it records.
