ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

Swami, after following your several sessions I have come to have a very real feeling of how I am not the body: I fly a drone with a FPV glass and look down on myself from height and distance with total detachment. The body where I dwell looks just another object! A great feeling to begin with!
@gameone6597
@gameone6597 3 жыл бұрын
Great! But I don't 'dwell' in the body either! Instead, the body and this entire universe time APPEAR in me. These names and forms that we call the body or universe appear and disappear in me, keep changing in me while I'm there constantly unchanging, unmoving, unaffected by any of it.

Can a person in coma....experience that he is in coma ?? Or when the brain is asleep, do we experience that we are sleeping. Can any independent 'self/awareness' tell that the brain is sleeping ??? That means when the mind/brain stops working.....there is no independent self/consciousness, that experience that I am in coma/sleep. So it's the brain that experiences the brain. The brain is self aware.
@karllopes
@karllopes 3 жыл бұрын
@@MDVaashir The one who is there in the waking, dreaming AND deep sleep where the brain experiences no visible "awareness" also known as Turiya is what is referred to as consciousness... It is not an Object which you can be "aware" of.. That is the basic message of Vedanta.

Also, suggest 2x playback speed rather than skipping earlier part as understanding context of speech/knowing speaker always help. He has taken time to prepare for this delivery.

I just got the Ashtavakra Gita and love it. I wish I could have a conversation with Swami Sarvapriyananda because there are some things I don't quite understand. I can easily understand that when you observe an apple, for example, you are not the apple. An apple is an object of consciousness. You are the observer of the apple, the awareness of the apple. In the exact same way, any thought that arises in the mind is not you. You are the observer of the thought. What I don't understand is how one can observe the eyes. We can become aware that we are seeing or not seeing but we can't observe the eyes. And becoming aware that we are seeing seems to be a mental process. Without an intelligent mind able to discern this an animal could see their entire lives without ever knowing that they are seeing. It seems to me that just as the eyes cannot be observed but are inferred by the fact of the awareness, the self cannot be observed but is inferred by the fact of awareness. This is perhaps the deeper interpretation of Descarte's phrase, "I think, therefore I am."
@amaccoop34
@amaccoop34 3 жыл бұрын
While I am pretty convinced about the existence of the self, to say it exists is to say too much. Can we really say that the self is consciousness? As the Buddhists say, consciousness arises entirely dependent on contact between sense organs and sense objects. There is no independently existing consciousness. This is why the Buddha even said that consciousness is not-self.
