Selection on the Colombian paso horse's gaits has produced kinematic differences partly explained by the DMRT3 gene. Miguel Novoa-Bravo et al (2018), PLOS ONE doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone....
The Colombian paso horse, the most important horse breed in Colombia, performs specific and particular gaits (paso fino, trocha, and Colombian trot), which display different footfall patterns and stride frequencies. The breed has been selected for gait and conformation for more than 50 years and we hypothesize that this selection has led to kinematic differences of the gaits that can be explained by different genetic variants.
Hence, the aims of the study were: 1. To identify if there are any differences in the kinematic and genetic variants between the Colombian paso horse’s gaits. 2. To evaluate if and how much the gait differences were explained by the nonsense mutation in the DMRT3 gene and 3. To evaluate these results for selecting and controlling the horses gait performance.
To test our hypotheses, kinematic data, microsatellites and DMRT3 genotypes for 187 Colombian paso horses were analyzed. The results indicated that there are significant kinematic and DMRT3 differences between the Colombian paso horse’s gaits, and those parameters can be used partially to select and control the horses gait performance.
However, the DMRT3 gene does not play a major role in controlling the trocha and the Colombian trot gaits. Therefore, modifying genes likely influence these gaits. This study may serve as a foundation for implementing a genetic selection program in the Colombian paso horse and future gene discovery studies for locomotion pattern in horses.

I could watch these horses do this all day long. There is something oddly satisfying and quite humerous about it. I think they are awesome. I'd love to see this in person.

I understand these horses have peculiar ability to gait like this. But I'd like to see them doing it without tight reins and those tails that look rather tense to me.

You realize Paso Finos walk like that almost right after birth, right? They usually haven’t been forced or trained into walking like that.

@@luablau In the fino division, the horses are working in high collection, which requires contact. Most gaited horses are shown on contact, even in Western divisions, but of course they can be ridden on a loose rein. And yes, the tail carriage is natural.

My girl was never trained in these gaits. I had her for 3 years and rode her western and in the ring for competing at Barrels. 🐎❤ I knew she had gaits but I didn't know the training at the time. I loved her, she was black with her mane on the left, long and her beautiful tail, the same way. She was the last horse I had so I'm biased, love Pasos. ❤🐎😎

In all honesty they look all choked up on the reins and the horses look uncomfortable in their tails look unnatural even though I know that’s how it’s done it still just doesn’t look right to me.

The tails are natural, they have long tail bones that curl into a j shape. As for the rest, I can't comment on it because I don't know to be honest, but it is a bit alarming

No, it's natural. Some horses have a genetic trait that makes them move in a 4-beat gait rather than a 2-beat trot. People have been selectively breeding gaited horses for over two thousand years--the ancient Romans had "ambulatores," or "walkers," as well as "cruciatores," "trotters."

@@Anastasia2048 No, it's just their gait. The Spanish brought their ancestors to the New World and bred a hardy, smallish horse that would be comfortable to ride all day.

They don't make them do this they're born with the ability to do that that is what is so special about that I used to think it was abused until I started researching this horse they are bred to do that walk it's called the pasifino gate and it is something that they are born to do

They are focusing on the horses' show gaits here. But Paso Finos do all sorts of things--trail riding, barrel racing, reining, ranch work, endurance, even dressage and jumping. They're not just for show.
