Oh boy, she broke so many barriers and did so much for us. She was called the latina madonna because of her cultural impact and how huge she was. Selena was the first tejano woman to get to that kind of success, and opened doors in the american market for the latino music, she (along with shakira) was one of the main reasons why the 2000's latino explosion happened. The Tejano genre didn't recovered after her death (even though she played multiple genres like pop, R&B, cumbias, mariachi, latin pop etc). She was the first Tejano artist in history to win a grammy award in 1994. In 2021 she was named by Billboard as the 3rd most influential latina artist in history. Her album ''Ones'' (a compilation of her #1 hits) hasn't left the Billboard Top 10 of Most streamed latin albums since its release in 2002. Her album "Dreaming Of You" is the best selling latin album in the US history, and her "Amor Prohibido" album is the 4th in the same list.

I'm a Hispanic American Texan and we loved and adored Selena. Her death hit us like a ton of bricks and our Hispanic communities mourned for years and frankly, still do. Selena was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas. This album came out in 1994. She toured the U.S. and then ventured into Mexico where she was greeted with open arms and a ton of love. Even though her Spanish was lacking some, she won them over with total respect, love, and total admiration to the Mexican culture of which she embraced wholeheartedly. Her concerts were packed in Mexico and , in addition, she made TV appearances on the biggest music shows and they loved her for it. Selena was compared to Madonna but that comparison was quickly and absolutely cleared up and corrected. Unlike Madonna, Selena was loving, very respectful, not provocative with her outfits, her music dealt with life experiences and positive and enduring growth with love in relationships and family and she never portrayed herself as slutty or lacking of a young lady. She was an absolute decent and respectable young lady with super moral values and she loved and treated her fans with that same respect and love. We love you Selena, RIP our Estrella.

Selena was very versatile & covered many genres of music in her short career, from ballads & rancheras to rock & pop. Selena didn’t only cover many genres but she excelled!!! Selena was also Sexy on stage but not vulgar. People of all ages would flock to go watch Selena live Children & the older generation loved her the most. Her English crossover was going to be huge! “Seh-leh-nah” is definitely the Spanish pronunciation, but Selena’s name is pronounced “Seh-lee-nah” like Selena Gomez. Also, you definitely need to react to one of her English songs. It really demonstrates the scale in which she grew with the crossover album “Dreaming of You”. I would recommend the title track, Dreaming of You.

I don't remember people calling her Madonna. I'm from Mexico close to get hometown so I remember her crossover to Mexico. Tex Mex had never been popular smog Mexicans. We have our own regional music and in fact, TexMex was their version of it. Anyways, She had some spark in her voice and song by song she conquered Mexican radio in 89. Coincidentally, there was this evolution of regional music taking over mainstream radio so suddenly, it was in for everybody to listen to regional music while adult contemporary, Rick and pop took a nosedive. Techno dis o, club music and Latin regional tried and Selena with it.

so, the cool thing about her was that even though she was an american, she was extremely loved in mexico. her largest crowd was in monterrey, mexico with 96,000 fans in attendance. to put that in perspective, U2's largest ever crowd was 108,000, so only 12,000 more people. i have watched a lot of reacts of Selena's performances in english, spanish, portugese and french. she seems to be universally loved. BUT, i did notice that several spanish vocalists (from spain) commented on her vowel pronunciation. not negatively, one said it was more beautiful than using the natural accent. like how she open "Como La Flor" in spanish "Floor" like the floor in english, but she pronounced it "Fleur" like a fleur de lis (french). just some little tidbits of nerd info there. lol
