Self Assessment for non-resident UK company owners: Part 1

Are you a non-resident owner or director of a UK company and don’t know whether you need to register for Self Assessment? In the first of a two part series, this video will explain when it is necessary to register for Self Assessment, and also provide a step-by-step guide to the registration process. In Part 2, we will cover how to send a Self Assessment tax return to HM Revenue and Customs, or HMRC, the UK tax authority.

Can you explain how the PROOF (Protected Online Filing) system enhances the security of our company's online filings and ensures that our sensitive information is not made public? I applied it and its accepted. However I dot know how it will effect me. Thank you.

The PROOF service prevents the filing of certain paper forms, including: changes to your registered office address changes to your officers (appointments, resignations or personal details) changes to your company name by special resolution Companies House will reject any paper versions of the forms and send them back to the registered office address. This is to avoid any fraudulent submissions.

i created my company in january 2024 and i'd like to know if i have to declare my income knowing that i'm not working with this company yet.

If your company is dormant (not trading), you must call HMRC and let them know that you will be dormant so that they can make a note on your account and won't chase you for Corporation Tax. Inside the UK: 0300 200 3410 Outside UK: +44 151 268 0571 Alternatively, you can contact HMRC online here: www.gov.uk/tell-hmrc-your-company-is-dormant-for-corporation-tax. Please do note that even if your company is dormant, it is still a legal requirement to file your Annual (Dormant) Accounts and your Confirmation Statement with Companies House.
