Due to the sucsess of my first self checkout compilation, I've decided to make another one, with many more self checkouts too. The previous Self Checkout Compilation had a 5 minute run time, this one goes on for nearly 10 mintues.
Much like with the previous compilation, I decided to write a little description for each self checkout.
WHsmith in Richmond used to have 3 SelfServ R5s, but a few weeks ago they replaced 2 of them with SelfServ 90s, and the remaining R5 was refurbished into R6 standard, with a new scanner, note recycler, software, reciept printer, and screen. The coin hopper and motherboard appear to be the same. I filmed the one on the right before it was replaced, I was going to add it to my first compilation but I forgot to.
Waitrose (old) and CO-WOP have these horrible self checkouts (aka Please scan an Item or touch the screen to start) that always malfunction (mostly because of the bagging scale), I thought these went extinct ages ago, but sadly, numerous Waitrose and Co-Ops still have these. The most notable thing about these is the loud receipt printers. I thought the one at the Co-Op I filmed were used ones from B&Q, but the B&Q ones are an earlier model, so I think they could potentially be old waitrose ones.
The slightly newer waitrose ones are tolerable, mainly because they lack a bagging area, but the brand new ones suffer from the glitches of the old ones. The myWaitrose card seen in the video only works when it wants to, as it is incredibly worn.
No ones ever filmed a new software tesco self checkout paying with cash, so I decided to do so. "Please insert coins and notes below".
I wasn't even planning to add Wholefoods to the video, I only added it because they just so happened to magically appear during a visit a few days ago. The software is the worst so far, there's a volume button, but the only indicator of the volume changing is a beep so quiet I only noticed during editing. The receipt printer only works when it wants to.
Budgens is a symbol group, meaning every single store is franchised. As most franchisees can't afford self checkouts, very few budgens actually have them. The one I filmed (Belsize Park) is one of the very few that do. Around 2017 they had these weird ITAB self checkouts put in, following a change in ownership in 2021, these were removed, and in 2022 the store underwent a massive refurbishment, which included the installation of 6 SelfServ R6LNs, and 1 R6L (the one I filmed), these self checkouts are a little bit glitchy, finish and pay shows 0 pounds, it calculates coupons when there are none, weird SagePay popups happen when paying by card, and switching payment methods confuses the Machine.
In the Budgens and Morrisons videos, I demonstrate the ability to pay a portion of the sum by cash, and the rest of the sum by card.
The morrisons in the video is the brand new one which opened near me, 6 self checkouts are cash and card and 8 are card only. There are also 6 tills. Some of the self checkouts have what I call the "Bodge scanner", the bodge scanner is the scanner seen in the WHsmith at the start of the video. It has also been spotted in Tesco. If you wait 15 seconds on the "Finish and Pay" screen, the machine will say "Select payment type" in an American accent (thanks ‪@ukhanddryers‬ for telling me this).
Sainsburys, much like tesco, have their own software for self checkouts, but the software still runs on top of Windows, likely because of drivers. The self checkouts at my local "big sainsbury's" were installed in 2014, in 2019 half were removed and the other half refurbished to R6 standard, and R6LNs were installed. In 2023, more R6LNs, were installed and the remaining R5s magically re-appeared (being refurbished to R6 standard of course), with 2 extra R6Ls being installed.
