There is often one thing that people will do before a sucker punch: taking a step back.
The moment you see your attacker taking a step back, it means he’s getting into position to strike you or do a sucker punch. This should automatically raise a red flag. You need to instantly be aware of your opponent’s movements and body language.
When you see your attacker taking a step back, it’s the perfect time to strike. Use that opportunity to do a double palm strike or a hammer punch. This is the perfect opportunity so make it count.
Timing is everything when it comes defending yourself against a sucker punch. You want to move in as soon as you see your attacker taking a step back. Don’t wait for him to throw the first punch.
Being pre-emptive is crucial in this scenario. You don’t know how hard the other person will hit. Especially if your attacker is bigger than you, chances are he will cause significant damage. So, as soon as you see him taking a step back, don’t wait. Strike him right away and make sure to put all your weight behind it for maximum impact.
Practice your self-defense moves with your training partner so that you can work on your timing and perfect your movements.

CodeRedDefense.com Once I saw a big dude sucker punch someone who was sitting in the passenger seat of a car, window down! He approached the car like he was going to talk, but instead just punched him in the face! How would you defend that??

I always angle off. Keeps you from getting kicked in the balls, sets up Karate stance for kicks, punches, distance and faster reaction time. Also, protects you from the shove.

Great point, that is a great option for self-defense. But sometimes, an attacker can come in close and that's when these tips come in handy. Stay safe.

I've only been sucker punched the once before, luckily the lad didn't have a clue how to punch with any real force and didn't know how to put any weight in to it. So I took it and ended up throttling him to the floor and then sparking him. People thought I was a 'bad man' for taking the suprise punch, I didn't want to say he was flat footed and it had barely any power behind it, I just basked in the "Granite jaw Godwin" (my Surname) comments outside the kebaby while I waited for me chips lol.

This is an wrong advice and is not self defence anymore. It is advising to over react. Better create distance yourself and raise your hands. Unfollowed.
