Here is a quick tour of the kit and equipment supplied by the rental company - SA4x4. Everything you need is on board and they even supply towels and pillows to go with the sleeping bags! All camping equipment is onboard from gas cooker to chopping-board and the ever-important corkscrew!
The Hilux is as capable as any other 4x4 out there and the well-known reliability gives you peace of mind.
It is a good choice if you want to explore Southern Africa in a self-drive camper! Although perhaps lacking in the charisma department compared to a Land Rover/Cruiser...
It was an older model (7th Gen.) which is comfortable enough but lacked some of the further refinement of the newer model. The engine is also down on power compared to the latest version, which isn't a major problem due to Botswana's unusually (and surprisingly) flat landscape. Tough conditions in soft sand was not a real problem and it cruised happily at an indicated 95/100 km/h on the road.
We had a mishap with the engine light coming on on the dashboard, but this was traced to a speedometre sensor cable coming out of the gearbox. After being sorted at a garage in Maun it came on again a few days later then disappeared for good. Perhaps a gremlin; considering it had 200 000 km's on the clock...
Overall, well capable with 2H, 4H & 4L and locking diff on the rear axle which can be engaged if needed.
