What’s expected to be the first autonomous container ship is at the beginning of a two-year pilot.
Norwegian fertiliser giant Yara is behind the vessel, which will gradually transition to fully autonomous navigation.
The global maritime industry is a major emitter of greenhouse gases, and it is thought this could be one step towards a green shipping revolution.

Just imagine you're out for a cruise. The ship sinks, and you're in the open ocean. Then on the horizon, a ship. You're saved!!! But it's autonomous and just leaves you adrift.

@feonor26 2 жыл бұрын
@@1newme425 Do you know what one of the most vulnerable aspects of our society is? A too high reliance in tech. It takes one serious power outage, a solar flare or something similar to bring our society to its knees without any form of backup systems. Sensors and computers can fail, that's why we have pilots in the cockpit of airplanes. The airplanes are perfectly capable of flying themselves from start to finish with little or no human interaction. So why don't we do that? We have no reason to say that computers are safer than a human. It hasn't been tested nearly to that extent at all. Humans do error but can also troubleshoot and reason on the spot when something unexpected happens. An algorithm can't do that. People have this sci-fi image of an AI that will learn new things by itself etc. Doesn't work like that, it's an algorithm that will do only what it is programmed to do and it can fail just as your computer at home fails from time to time, and when that happens a human better be there to take over. There is no computer in the world that beats the human brain.

Thankfully the entire Russian sanctions drama seems to have woken up our Government to the realities and importance of maintaining a large Indian flag fleet. Having an Indian flag fleet will insulate our seafarers from some of the shock due to growing automation. Anyways, fast growing economies like India and PH will still offer our seafarers a chance at re-skilling and getting absorbed in another career. So it is not all bad.

Green shipping would be a massive leap in pollution reduction considering most ships burn fuel oil which inevitably seems to find a way into bilge waste which is routinely dumped in the open oceans without a care, but autonomous shipping with all the variables at sea just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, however the proof is in the pudding as they say but if accidents did happen its only with hindsight people would show animosity toward the practice.

The routes they are currently planning are all relatively short. These are specifically designed to replace land transport. There are far fewer variables. But like the man implied, the maintenance of the ships would still be a problem in its current form. That's just one example i could give many more but why when a thinking person who knows something of subject can do the same unmanned shipping is not a hazard in & of itself but like you say someone would need to be on hand for maintenance & emergencies as described, but the green aspect of the project i applaud its about time. @@karlashdown5228 I think an excellent middle ground would be to give ships like these emergency skeleton crews which could take over in any unexpected event which could happen at sea, considering the space they’d be saving with having the bare minimum crew, they might even be able to make quarters comfortable enough for the job to be a rather good deal. Plus, jobs are retained (and made in the case of shore watchers) with minimal impact (as far as I know, not being an expert) to the overall goal of the project, which seems to be clean energy/emission first, automated shipping second.

Lastly in case of patrol ship or guard ship ask for ship who to call first? As well restrict area. Even the bug ship cpu will cause an error. There one thing is delay ship or docking it still require human actions. Another point it can be used as weapon to do damage to the port. If the hacker manage to gain control. Most of the crew for the world's shipping and cruise ships come from my country. It seems maybe they'll be a dying breed in a couple of decades, cuz these electric, autonomous ships seem like a great idea.

As remarked during the development, Thank You for adding the full bridge & related systems. Much appreciated and I believe the general consensus coming out of all the meetings / discussions / debates it was needed. During the education process, people on board to assist as needed and on moment's notice. Building the data sets and creating the standards in reliable and viable ways. If no bridge, it would be a novelty for much longer than intended and build a bad rep. As "mixed crew" (Human & AI), such issues can be negated by solidly building accurate data and direct links between Capt / Ship (AI) and Shore. The complete bridge does allow for quick human take over in case of issues over the life of the vessel too. Having some basics for the human to be a "rider" to observe the operation from the perspective of Owner/Operator, Class Society, Port State Control, Flag State, Underwriters, Other Authorities as needed will speed adoption and put minds at ease on the reliability of both normal & emergency operations. Other visitors? As with any other shipping, riding team for painting, general maintenance, auditing, AI verification or updating personnel and "lessons learned" personnel to apply to other vessels. Lessons Learned can see first hand, strengths & weakness of any design then where do we want or need to go for "next gen". There is another aspect of such operations where there are many others affected by the approach & vessel existence/operations. All the people on shore displaced by the operations - planning in what shore side evolutions need to take place. As an off shoot of the meetings, several major ports in different parts of the globe had agreed on addressing such as the process of transition moves forward. It is key to the safe & effective operation as a whole (end to end transitions). To all involved, "Nicely Done" and keep up the great work. As always, Thank you for the fine, complete bridge and "always having a back up plan". Best Regards & Cheers, Paul

Folks have been making these sorts of claims for your. Automation does clearly put some folks out of a job, but in the long run automation generates more jobs for more folks. I mean, they used to assemble cars by hand. The assembly line created an immense number of jobs and drove middle class wealth up for decades. There's no basis for a blanket statement condemning automation.

I'd imagen that when everything is done by robots and what not there will be no need for payed jobs and the likes. everyone will be free. robots will build robots and they will do every job you can think of. and everything else will be free. At least that's the hope of it all. who knows how the transition will go. It will most likely be a slow process. that's the worry. But apart from that, A guy can dream right :D
