You're going to want to tag along for this one! Late season turkeys can be a special kind of challenge. This fine gobbler was no exception. I had to get creative to seal the deal on this highly educated, public land longbeard! Leave me a comment to let me know what you think! #PinhotiProject #TurkeyHunting #Hunting

Dave, thanks so much for going to all the trouble to film this series. Not only do I enjoy the videos but am learning a ton about turkey behavior and why they might do what they do. This is definitely the best turkey series I have ever watched. Thanks again!

There's always a risk involved with every decision. I feel like the decision I made there isn't going to end like that very often. I plan to get back to the reWork stuff once I'm finished with the season. Thanks for following along!

I wish I could say that doesnt happen much, but I've seen a surprising number of SC public land turkeys with other people's shot in them. Nice job! That was a tough bird, and one that would test most anyone's abilities.

Gotta get my Dave fix in every morning before work... Shane would be proud with your filming skills ! Great footage on the limb and a really tough spot to kill him.. But you managed ! LOL ! You called very little as you knew this bird had been educated all season long and showed us the reason why when you were cleaning him. Thanks for another awesome hunt !! Hurky Jerk !!

Just curious, with him staying on the limb so late, did you call to him any at all while he was on the limb? I've dealt with a few like that but I usually blame it on me calling to them when I shouldn't. Really enjoying the videos and details.
@pinhotiproject
@pinhotiproject 5 жыл бұрын
I did not. I included all the calling that I did to that gobbler in the video. With the knowledge I'd gathered from him on our previous 2 meetings, I knew if that didn't peek his interest then more calling would only hurt the situation.

A wise turkey doing what they do best. Making you come to him. Of course someone made him wiser. I enjoyed that. Not sure if you mentioned it anywhere, but I was curious as to the tripod camera you use to zoom in. Thanks for another great video.

Congrats on the kill! Do you switch to a green or red tinted headlamp when you get close to a roosted bird or do you just go completely dark and let your eyes adjust? Once you get close to where you think he's roosted , do you set up and wait for him to gobble or do you just stand by a tree or something and wait to move in closer? I understand if you're too busy for questions. Really enjoy the videos and I'm learning a lot!!

Usually it's all dark for me, I can't tell you cumulatively how many miles I've felt my way through the woods in the dark attempting to get in the perfect spot before daybreak. I use a red light sometimes but normally that's sparingly. And whether I sit or stand all depends on the situation. If I'm confident I'm tight, I'll settle and prepare in case daylight puts him eyesight. If I'm on a high knob listening and I know there isn't a chance for one to be above me I'll stand for better listening. Thanks for watching!

Did you call to him at all while he was still on the roost? Sometimes that will cause him to stay up there past normal flydown.

I did not. You heard all the calling I did to that gobbler during the video. I'd learned a little about his ways with the previous 2 mornings. I knew if the calling I did had not peeked his curiosity then it wasn't going to happen. That's when things got "coyote."

I had to do something very similar this past spring to a bird that was on an island in a swamp I crawled down a hill and through a flat to edge of the island he was on he made me work for hard to kill him and I loved it

You criticize turkey hunters for using bait, but you do it because you don't understand what some hunters must go through to even see a turkey. When you have to hunt small plots of land, your mobility is very limited, so you can't use the "run and gun method" that you do. Often a small plot hunter is close to houses and is limited to using a bow. Therefore, the hunter must take a position and try to call birds to him. If the birds roam out of the small plot, they are unavailable. Since the hunter can't chase the birds all over a large area, he must try to keep them on or near the small plot he has permission to hunt on. That's why turkeys are baited.............. It is simply to provide more opportunities. The hunter must still do his part to make the kill. Your opinion about baiting turkeys is very short sighted. Come and try your hand in the neighborhoods I hunt in and after you watch birds walk out of your hunting plot a few times, I'm sure you won't find baiting them so deplorable.
@pinhotiproject
@pinhotiproject Жыл бұрын
I'm unsure how to put this politely so I'll just say it. You're wrong. Not only wrong, but very wrong. Under no circumstances would I ever condone the use of bait for turkeys. And especially because you need to "keep them in your small plot." Firstly, baiting turkeys is illegal in nearly all states with few exceptions (Texas and maybe KS come to mind.) Secondly, the name of the game is to convince a gobbler into a place using woodsmanship and calling- bait plays no part in that. We all face challenges, property lines are one of those. Adapt and overcome, don't rely on some cheat code. My apologies if that seems harsh. But I have no sympathy for someone who baits turkeys. You can bait your deer all day every day, I don't care. But wild turkeys- a being that only functions in the light of day- baiting is not acceptable.

@@pinhotiproject Well Dave, your welcome to take the position you have, as long as you know all the facts. But you know as well as I do, there are hundreds of situations that can present themselves while turkey hunting. Of course, shooting a turkey OVER a bait pile is reprehensible and that is NOT what I am describing here. In your videos, you demonstrate that you put a lot of miles on every year walking through the woods looking for turkeys. Basically, you are trying to find a place where turkeys are feeding on acorns, bugs, worms etc. or other natural foods. They could even be in a cut cornfield feeding on the corn that was left on the ground after mowing. Once you locate the spot, you set up and try to call a bird in, but don't forget the tom was in the area chasing hens that were feeding on something. Where I hunt, the plots that hold turkeys are very small (often less that a couple of acres) and they are often near houses or posted land where gun hunting is also impossible or at least very difficult. Consequently, the wild turkeys have the freedom to roam from one small area to another searching for food. In these situations, one strategy to increase ones opportunity to engage with these birds is to provide the food they are looking for. This is usually done by scattering a few handfuls of whole corn or bird food around the area and monitoring it with a trail camera. The idea is not to shoot the turkeys over a bait pile, but to give them a reason to gravitate to your area as opposed to another. I hope this explains my position a little clearer Dave, but having watched many of your videos I think you clearly know what I'm talking about. I've killed a great many turkeys with both the gun and the bow and I can honestly tell you that I have NEVER shot one over a bait pile.
