Towing the car: • U-Haul car trailer tow...
This video will explain my experience in using U-Haul to make a recent move 900 miles from my previous residence. I hope you can avoid the mistakes I made and if you decide to make a long distance move yourself, it will be as stress free as possible.

Thank you so much for this video! I really appreciate it! I'm renting a 10ft truck with the tow dolly and driving almost 2,000 miles. I totally agree with you Trina! I am planning a move from Nebraska to MS (a little over 800 miles) and this video was so very informative. And I was thinking about towing my 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee as well. I've driven a Uhaul before but never this far. I'm a little nervous about stopping for gas and clearing the pumps but I'm sure it'll be ok. I will need about a 15' truck...Mercy

THANK YOU!! for doing this. Years ago I used a 10 ft Uhaul towing a car from Georgia to North Carolina, and never checked the straps but made it fine. Now 18 years later, I am about to use a 15 ft Uhaul while towing my SUV from California to Georgia. Thanks to you, I will definitely be checking the straps. I was also concerned about having my car vulnerable to theft, since this isn't a done-in-a-day drive, but I see your solution with the locks on the chains. Very helpful and thorough video. Again, Thank You!

Great Video. Very informative for those who may be planning a move. I would like to offer a couple of explanations to clear a couple of things up that were mentioned on the video, and try to help First, the U-Haul truck rates do vary from week to week, based on local supply, and demand of where the truck is going (excessive inventory as opposed to thin inventories) It is advised that the reservation be made as soon as you can, and if the rates go up, you are locked in. Likewise, if you look, and notice that the following week after you make the reservation, that the rate went down, just call the U-Haul Reservation line, and they will reduce your rate to that current lower rate. As far as locations, U-Haul has the most locations of Corporate Moving Centers and independent dealers in North America. When you make a reservation, it is sent to a Regional Office in your area who's job it is to schedule your reservation to a location. I know that they do all they can to send it to your preferred pick up location, but if that location does not have it, they do download it to a close location that does. (U-Haul does not have transfer drivers, so the Regional office tries to get equipment dropped off from previous rentals at your preferred location, or as close to it as possible) And as far as requesting exact drop locations, there are times that some locations cannot accept equipment coming in. This would be mostly due to allowed capacity based on available space, or even local zoning ordinances. Sometimes, they are leasing their property from developers, and they are allowed a limited number of trucks or trailers. Safemove/ Safetow coverage is optional, but always recommended. Even if your personal policy were to cover the equipment, YOU would still be immediately responsible to reimburse U-Haul for any damages incurred during a rental, then it would be your responsibility to get reimbursed from your carrier. These coverages are also nice because if something does happen, claims on your policy would be minimized, therefore, your rates may not go up. You can get more information on the coverage options provided by U-Haul @ www.uhaul.com/DamageCoverage The miles per gallon calculations are estimations for ideal driving circumstances. Many conditions can affect this number, including driving with a load, road grades, weather conditions and vehicle speed. If at the end of a rental, you still feel that the MPG was lower than what it should have been, the U-Haul Customer Service Department can assist you. U-Haul International and their members are here to assist in any way possible. From Reservations, Location pick-up, and if needed, 24/7 Road service to assist in case of a problem. Never be afraid to contact U-Haul if you have any questions about a reservation, equipment, hitch, or supplies. You can get a lot of information by clicking here: www.uhaul.com

Cool. Thanks for watching. An in-town tow is more forgiving, mpg doesn't matter that much, and you don't have to tow a car. If the truck isn't big enough, make another trip.

Thanks for the valuable info. I am getting a 20 foot U-Haul truck instead of my original idea of a 17 foot one. I like the auto transport better than the tow dolly. I think it's safer for a long distance move.

Paul Varga Good deal. Hope all goes well.
@JamesGegner
@JamesGegner 9 жыл бұрын
Paul Varga I would also much rather use the U-Haul Auto Transport than a tow dolly for towing a vehicle on a long distance move, especially if the vehicle being towed is either rear wheel drive or all wheel drive. A tow dolly is ideal for towing a front wheel drive vehicle, but if you want to tow either a rear or all wheel drive vehicle with a tow dolly, you must disconnect the drive shaft of the vehicle being towed before you begin your trip, otherwise you'll ruin the transmission and rear differential of the vehicle being towed. This can be a major hassle that not everyone wants to deal with. Robert DIY Thanks for the valuable info and tips on performing a do-it-yourself move with U-Haul equipment. They will come in handy if I ever need to make a long distance move.
@paulvarga4789
@paulvarga4789 9 жыл бұрын
Right. Tow dolly's suck.
@JamesGegner
@JamesGegner 9 жыл бұрын
+Paul Varga One other thing I wanted to mention is that some front wheel drive vehicles are actually too heavy to be towed using a U-Haul tow dolly. According to the U-Haul website, the maximum that a front wheel drive vehicle to be towed using a U-Haul tow dolly can weigh is 3,450 pounds. One example of such a vehicle would be a 2006-2013 Chevrolet Impala, whose curb weight is approximately 3,555 pounds, therefore making it too heavy to be towed using a U-Haul tow dolly. In that case, you would have to use a U-Haul Auto Transport to tow this particular vehicle.
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 9 жыл бұрын
Wow James, that is great info. My car is about 3,400 lbs, to top it off, I probably loaded about 500 lbs in the car which make it unsafe to do the tow. Yikes!

@@RobertDIY Update.. I left Virginia and made it in 2 days to the Vero Beach area of Florida. Had to jump up to the very largest Uhaul truck ( 26 footer) with a full vehicle trailer behind . I had to go to 2 different locations for the 2 rentals. The most convenient location (same place I made my reservations from) had neither of the two. The mileage out on the contract was about 80 miles more than was on the odometer. Other issues as well. ( I was authorized about 950 miles for the charged amount on contract) All said and done, although it was a frustrating Uhaul experience, I did get it done. I will say the people at the turn in location were so cool, it made up for most of the frustration. It is important to retighten the tire straps. At first check, my driver's side front tire strap was very loose and had shifted off the top of the tire. I didn't realize the strap tightener device does move and needs to be shifted directly in front of the tire before tightening. When I was trying to connect the trailer to the Uhaul truck, it would not lock into place on the tow ball even with bouncing, shifting the vehicle back and forth, etc. The trailer ball area was so dry it was almost frozen. It only locked on after it was doused with WD40 to loosen it up. The trailer speed limit is posted as 55 mph on the trailer. I looked down at the speedometer and was doing over 55 with great, safe, handling. So..... I arrived sooner than otherwise expected. The radio did have an AUX input so I was able to stream a combo of Pandora and Howard Stern along to 13 or so hours. The rig is so big, I went to triple A in advance and had them map out for me only large gas stations every 200 or so miles. These larger (truck) stations were better accommodating for large truck and trailer combos. I also pre entered each station on my phone GPS and saved the trip for ease of heading to the next stop. Oh, don't forget to put the ramps out before backing your truck off of the trailer. It can happen with so much on one's mind. (Moves are stressful). Having said all of that, so far Florida life has made worth it, all of the frustration with selling, buying, moving, etc. Oh, almost forgot...USAA DOES NOT cover Uhaul rentals, only traditional rental vehicles. I had to buy the uhaul insurance for the truck and trailer. Good luck in your move and thanks again Robert.

Robert DIY local moves are charged at an hourly rate. However, most will come to your home and give you a ball park on how long it will take. But, if they say 3 hours and it happens to take 4, then you will be charged for 4. The billing time should never include breaks or time lost due to movers. During the summer, if we have an 8 hr move we may stop half way for 30 min to cool off. Customer should not be billed for that time.

Hi again Mr Robert, My wife and I had a delay with our moving plans and had to wait about another 6 months before moving to Virginia from Maryland. Now that the move is over and we are settled in I would like to share a couple of things. 1. U-Haul told me over the phone that the truck and car towing trailer would be available and located at the closed location to my apartment. I thought that was great since U-Haul has a location approximately 2 miles from where we were living. However, the day of our move the truck was actually located 18 miles away in Baltimore City. We had to go pick it up. 2. I rented the blankets and thought they would put them in the truck. No, I had to go back and get them. 3. After loading the truck I went to load my car to the towing trailer. One of the strap rachets were not functional. I called U-Haul and they said I had to call road side assistance. I called roadside assistance and they said it would be a couple of hours before they could get to me so I was told "You would be better off taking it back to the location where you rented it." I drove the loaded truck and trailer back to the U-Haul location and they said I had to call road side assistance. I then said to the desk clerk "Road side assistance told me to bring the trailer back here", also "This is a U-Haul center and your telling me that there is no one here to fix or replace equipment?" To make a long story short we were delayed hours until getting another trailer. However, because of the delay I asked the clerk if I would be given more time on my contract because of the time loss. The desk clerk told me "No, because the faulty trailer has nothing to do with the equipment lease." What I found out was that U-Haul is a hub for renting, but, equipment coming in such as auto towing trailers and auto towing dollies etc are not inspected for proper functioning before releasing. If equipment is faulty, U-Haul finds out once there is a breakdown or the person leasing the equipment brings it back. "They are not proactive" *IF ANYONE IS READING THIS PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK THE EQUIPMENT YOU ARE RENTING BEFORE LEAVING THE LOT, BECAUSE U-HAUL DOES NOT CHECK EQUIPMENT BEFORE GIVING IT TO YOU*

Scotto Wd Yes, some of the location seem to care less. I have rented equipment from them 4 times since this move. The time before last, moving stuff from Little Rock to Abq, they hooked up a trailer to my car that didn't have any tail lights. So I waited 1-1/2 hours to get the trailer fixed or replaced. I think they finally replaced it. When moving across state lines, they usually lock you in for 3 or 5 days. They also told me that my truck would be at one location and I had to drive in the opposite direction and more distance to get my truck. I guess that is part of their game.

Thanks! Quite informative. I have done multiple UHaul truck moves but have not done one with a car dolly. I tried with one move from Massachusetts to Virginia but the dolly lights did not work and I was leaving at night. I had to abandon the dolly and my van I was going to tow since I had a house closing the next morning. I had to take a bus back to Massachusetts to get my van then drive it back. Make sure those dolly lights work!

Just because you want to get the equipment at a specific location does not guarantee it will be there, if the person who has the equipment returns it to the wrong spot, returns it late or it has damage and needs to be downed prevents it from being rented and they will push you to the next nearest location with the equipment available just as in drop offs some places can't take certain equipment due to city laws or lot size.

Their room suggestions assume that you're professionally packing everything. I don't pack well so I needed a 20ft truck for my studio. 8 mpg is average. I mashed it at 70 for 400 miles

7-8 mpg sounds correct for a loaded truck, unloaded- 12 mpg. This is where they come up with 10 mpg. Its an average. It is also how you drive it. Price is always higher at the beginning and end of month. It is when people typically move. Also, here in Florida, price sky rockets during season for obvious reasons. Hire moving labor from uhauls website. I guarantee you we could have made everything fit if my company loaded it. Also, car dollies are rough on cars. Use the auto transports. It is a trailer that holds the entire car. Good for you for helping others. Also, these rental places price match. Budget is almost always the cheapest.

I never did understand why the rates are higher on the weekend (29.95 vs. 39.95), just figured Uhaul was trying to beat $10 out of you because you have a regular job LOL!.. Even a regular pickup truck gets around 12-14 MPG without all the air drag from a box truck.

Very informative, I would advise anyone doing something similar to write up a 'pre-trip inspection list' that has all items you should be checking before you set off driving after any kind of stop, whether that be just to refuel or change drivers. Think safety first!

Robert DIY the list can contain a lot of what you mention like trailer hitch, connections, straps secure, tyre pressure, fluid levels, lights all working. CDL drivers do this before starting any drive

Check tire pressure every time I stop for gas?
@DJWerkz
@DJWerkz 6 жыл бұрын
Robert DIY I would at least do a visual inspection of all tyres but especially on any trailers/dolleys. You should be checking for any foreign objects anyway. Think about it like this; on a 20ft truck with a 40 gallon fuel tank averaging about 8 mpg with an average speed of about 50mph that's approximately 6.5 hours driving, that's quite some time between tyre inspections between stop periods 😉

If a person reserves equipment ahead of time if one knows when be moving the price you see online for trick and auto transport if need one is the price you'll pay when you pick up equipment which won't increase meaning that price is locked in. I've always used U-Haul since 1994 to move Local or One-Way & hadn't had any issues. When I move from Texas to Iowa next June I hope not to have issues with U-Haul.

You need to make sure of the Gross Weight requirements for your car insurance. Mine has a limit of 14,000 pounds, however, the truck I wanted to rent was 14060, not covered. Be careful have the Gross Weight limit. This is NOT the actual weight you are at the time of move, it is the specified limit of the rental truck.
