I find that when I read Emerson...it's very easy to interpret his message as essentially saying there is no right and wrong. In fact, it's difficult to reconcile (for me, at least), where compassion, "good" will, selflessness and the like fit into this overarching imperative of individualism. For example, "No law can be sacred to me but that of my nature. Good and bad are but names very readily transferable to that or this; the only right is what is after my constitution, the only wrong what is against it". This quote conveys a message that is incredibly dangerous, and from my perspective, can only be understood as a defense for sociopathy or psycopathy.

A very informational video about this essay, which gave me a lot of insight into Emerson's way of thinking. Keep up the good work, you're doing a great job in these analyses.

Why exactly were Henry james and Hawthorne against Emerson?
@publicme9 жыл бұрын
In stressing the need that each individual find out the truth for themselves, does Emerson repeat the approach of Socrates?
@Requ1escat1nPACE8 жыл бұрын
Cool point of view. The Socratic method was more structured though, I think. Like the prof here said, Emerson wouldn't like the idea of people following his work and ideas too much.

RWE is difficult to read. Self Reliance is not as difficult as some of his pieces. I recommend reading it about every 10 years as your understanding will be different as you mature. Some people of his time though RWE a little cold - and you learn why they thought this in this piece. He was not interested in small talk and drivel. He was the first "guru" lecturing about the country. Today, the tradition goes on with Depak Chopra and Wayne Dwyer etc. all basically saying the same thing, although science (quantum theory, astronomy and biological research) add further support to what earlier sages knew intuitively. RWE liked the spirituality of the church before everyone showed up - when it was silent. He knew the silliness of focusing on the messenger rather than the message. There was a mistrust of books and the written word as we find in Lao Tze. All these people experienced the universal force and tried to teach others how to share that experience. RWE is worth reading and thinking about and discussing. Good job Nick.
