Homesteading in an arctic blast of cold weather. The sun finally returns, right in time to give us enough solar power to run a heater for the chicken coop. We brave the windchills in order to complete the truck repair. The woodstove is constantly being stoked and providing a great heat for the log cabin. The woodash is used for our composting bin. We thaw out some frozen eggs from spring to make french toast with homemade bread. Nice and cozy in the cabin. Thanks so much for watching! -Shane and Lindsey Krumrie
Bread Recipe: (Adapted from Joy of Cooking)
Combine in a large bowl, and let stand until the yeast is dissolved, about 5 minutes:
1/4 cup warm (105F to 115F) water
1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
Add, and mix well:
1 large egg, beaten
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted
2 1/2 cups lukewarm (85F) water
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 to 1/2 cup sugar, honey, or maple sugar
Add:
4 cups whole wheat flour
4 cups all-purpose flour
Nead the dough, allow the dough to rise in a large oiled bowl until doubled, about 1 hour, and once in 2 greased 9 x 5 -inch loaf pans until doubled, about 45 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350F
Bake about 40 minutes. Bake until the crust is golden brown and the bottom sounds hollow when tapped. Remove the loaves to a rack to cool completely.
