This one is made by RRR - "Rīgas Radiotehnikas Rūpnīca", translates to Riga Radio Factory, which is in Latvia. There's also the "VEF" brand that made radios which was also based in Latvia. There was also Elfa/Aidas - from Lithiania (made mostly tube radios and reel to reel tape recorders)

Not most, but many. In fact, only Radiotechnica (such as this Selga) and VEF is two factories existed in Soviet Latvia. When USSR has gone, Latvia destroys their industry, including VEF and Radiotechnica.

hello!! I have many transistor radios. I have bought many models of Soviet radio receivers on ebay. but both the selga 404 and the 405 models are one of my favorites both in design and in simplicity, selectivity and sensitivity. I already have 12 of these!! and one of them has become my receiver for daily use. greetings from Argentina.

Nice Restoration, have repaired a few of these European Radios!! I retired just before Covid hit. Had collected about 50 pocket transistor radios over the years and decided it was time to do some repair. Many of these had some real collectable value so it was worth the effort. I would say that in 80% of the cases it was all related to capacitors. Very Low Audio. Most had dirty volume power switches... Was able to restore most of them over a 8 month period. Lots of fun, lots of pulling out your hair. Having the right tools was critical... Still left are 2 Sony that have the built in CLOCK!! Decided to save the hardest ones for another day... OH!!! I did throw out 6 radios as they were just not worth it, some water damage, some battery leakage that ate up the PC boards... Robert

This was equivalent to taiwanese pocket radios in USA for the USSR - mass produced, but very far from that cheap relative to average Joe income. The secret of good reception for all soviet radios was multitank first IF filter - a bit less losses than cristal filter with properly tuneable bandpass. This example goes under 404 model number - an intermediate serie recognisable by silvery speaker grill and chromed outer rim of the dial and the only difference with the later larger serie 405 model is box finish - black painted small holes perforated speaker grill and only the dial center cover was chromed.
@fiddlyphuk6414
@fiddlyphuk6414 Жыл бұрын
Multitank first IF filter, yes that's true. This thing also has a 3 transistor IF stage compared to a normal transistor radio's 2 transistor IF. That might also be the difference.

I can remember seeing one of these in Britain that was branded Vega. I wonder why you don't use L.W. in America now? Long Wave proved to have useful extra reach (if a lot of power was thrown at it) with Britain transmitting the Shipping Forecast to those out at sea via B.B.C. Radio 4.

Hi, in terms of Long Wave I can understand why it is of low concern to people in the western US, given that it has never been used for b/c radio transmissions in the Americas. Sadly long wave is in decline in Europe. Living in the Western European Islands we only have two long wave stations of much interest, BBC Radio 4 and RTE Radio 1. The latter being of interest to people in Britain because most people in the island of Ireland can pick up Radio 1 on FM. There is some speculation that BBC 4 on 198 kHz will go off the air but the frequency will remain in use, with a solid state transmitter, because it controls electricity meter timings. As happened with the French 162 kHz channel. Anyway these USSR receivers seem very efficient, it would be great if someone would produce a kit based on the circuit of one of these. I know you have built a couple of Chinese kits for medium wave (or "the broadcast band" in US parlance) and were not too impressed by either.

Soviet industry was divere through the republics-partially because jobs were needed, partially in an attempt to avoid everything being destroyed in the case of the war. I have read that Sukhoi-25 attack fighters were made in Georgia truck factory, all the way from prototypes, by truck factory workers. Those first prototypes had "interesting" flight characteristics and were used for ground testing of combat damage, but entire series was later made there.

I personally think old soviet electronics are pretty cool, and I'm pretty sure you buying old, obsolete electronics even from Russia, isn't funding Putin's war efforts. So, screw the critics, do what you do, and keep the videos coming. I'm not here for politics, social justice, or any of that crap. I'm here for the electronics and the joy of seeing something old brought back to life. Keep doing what we come here for and the haters can piss off.

The problem with these transformers (including IF transformers) is that the coil former are made of a low melting point plastic. As you solder them, the leads become loose. I really don't get why they haven't used some better thermoplastics. This was a well known problem for Soviet electronics already in the '60s, but they kept on making them this way till the '90s!
