In this video I will show you the subtle differences between three different model Selle Italia saddles. I have enjoyed Selle Italia saddles over the past 12 years of consistent road cycling, and even racing. Prior to switching to Selle Italia I used a Fizik Arione for about a year.
The oldest saddle in the line up is the Filght, and it is now about 8 years old. It's also the narrowest of the three, coming in at around 130 mm wide. The second saddle is the Max Flight Gel Flow and is about 2 years old. The third saddle is a Max SLR Gel Flow and it's brand new. The last two saddles are both around 145mm wide.
Here is a link to the new Max SLR saddle:

Thanks for the review! How do you think which saddle of these two is better for MTB and why?

Do i need to get you a metric measuring tape :) I had to watch a couple to times because the 145mm didn't seem quite right measured in inches.

Yes, standardization is a good idea. The US customary system should adopt the metric units of measurements. I should have used the calipers to measure the saddles! Next time...

I run very old Selle Italia saddles from 1993 with no flex or cutouts on both my Zipp's. I have 3 more from that year that I purchased from a bike shop that had them in his basement for years. I have snapped the rails on a few over the years and only like that older saddle on my Zipp's. I run a San Marco saddle with a cutout on my road bike, and haven't been real picky on my mountain bike saddles. I due ted to prefer a saddle with less padding.

You scored on the older Selle's! In many cases the older stuff is often better. I really had hoped they would keep the Flight model on production, but it has been discontinued, sadly. Oh well, I'll give this new SLR a try and see how it works.

Before I scored the extra ones from the bike shop I got into a bidding war on ebay for an older one. I was surprised that I liked the San Marco that came with my road bike.

Hey I’m thinking of the same saddles - max SLR gel flow and Max Flite Gel Flow - prices are about the same. Which is more comfortable now that you have ridden the SLR more?

I really like the SLR. It's breaking in nicely, and I have a few near 100 mile rides, and several Grasshopper Races on it now too. Saddles are obviously a personal choice, but I can say I like the SLR over the Max Flight. The Max flight is now my MTB saddle which works well because it's more squishy, and my MTB rides are typically only 20-30 miles.

Thanks for the feedback! I decided to go with the Max flite Gel Flow for the added comfort as I’m a casual road cyclist . I’m sure the stiffness of the SLR would be good for an athletic person but I hope the max flite don’t let me down lol

How is it going with the Max Flite Gel Flow?

It has become my preferred saddle on my MTB. The extra padding and typically shorter MTB rides suits it quite well.

What is the model on the left- the black one? Is that the SLR?

Very thorough. Well done. I noticed how much flex that max flite model had in the tail when I was holding your bike up in the park yesterday while you were patching your rear tire's tube. Seemed like it would be very comfortable. Would love to hear what you did for nutrition yesterday for our all day ride. I am interested in vegan nutrition. Do you have any videos on that yet? I may have missed them if so.

Thanks Nick! Before I go any further, your b-day ride was AWESOME! I'm so glad I made the trip down to ride with you and your crew, a great bunch of guys and strong riders. I'm still replaying the day in mind traveling along on all those amazing trails you put together. It's astonishing how you were able to stitch together 60 miles of off-road riding all within San Diego County. One topic I have only made a subtle mention of in any of my videos is Veganism. It's a hot button on KZfaq and while I support it very much, I'm not sure I want it to be a center piece of my content. Plus there are so many excellent KZfaqrs making Vegan content that I hardly imagine myself offering anything new or exciting. However, nutrition and cycling do go hand in hand, so I have been giving some thought on a video related to what I eat as a "vegan" cyclist, or shall we say "plant based." I'm coming up on my 4 year mark, next month in fact, as a plant based vegan. At the very least I can toss in my two cents and let people know it's possible to be healthy and active on a plant based diet. For the record, Veganism aims to exclude the use of all animal products, and while I make every effort to eliminate all animal products, I still own several leather items (saddles, belts, and shoes) to be clear this isn't considered vegan. That said, I am much more conscientious now, and will only buy leather if the alternatives are not feasible, or in my opinion worse for the envrionment. Saddles for example are a sticking point. I've had a hard time finding a replacement for a Brooks. I could go on, but I'm more than happy to give up belts, shoes, hand bags, and the like with the only exception being for saddles, or possibly shoes. Besides, it's really hard to tell whether or not leather is actually contributing to the suffering of animals. Leather itself is a byproduct of the animal food industries. Leather as a raw material only marginally increases profits of animal ag. I've been doing some research on this and it's still up for debate, for me anyway. Now, if everyone were to consume less animal products the price of leather would increase and the alternatives would become more attractive to manufacturer's and consumers. Therefore, if more people switch to a plant based diet, the economics of it would reduce the net amount of leather available. In addition, many alternatives require synthetic materials which are harmful to the environment and require fossil fuels to produce. These materials in some ways are worse, not sustainable, and we know how harmful fossil fuels and their derivatives are on the annals and the environment. All that said, for now, I'm just going to limit my purchases as more eco-friendly substitutes become more available. Hands down, the biggest impact is through food choices, which are easy to make for most people. On the ride, I ate three banana's, four Cliff Bars (vegan), and drank three large bottles of water. It wasn't a hot day, so I was able to stay hydrated fairly easily. Before the ride I ate a huge bowl of granola, with two apples, and about twenty blueberries all smothered in rice milk. I have found rice milk to be my favorite of the alternatives. However, do some checking around, imported rice from Asia is high in Arsenic, a carcinogen, but still better than dairy milk IMHO. If you consume rice, try and buy California rice when feasible. By the way, I made the transition to full plant based overtime. It wasn't an overnight switch like so many others. Like you in 2009 I made the call to switch to a vegetarian diet, and then slowly reduced the animal products. It took me about 4 years to figure out how to do it. Now, it's just easy, I eat beans, rice, potatoes, greens, fruits, breads, pasta, nuts, seeds, tortillas, lentils, berries, grains, hot sauces, and some vegan alternative cheeses/meats on occasion. The only challenge now is social events. I just don't like making a fuss about it, so I've had to bite the bullet on a few occasions an eat something I knew had dairy in it or even fish. These day's I'm more convinced It's better for my health, and easier for me to say no. I'm really sorry for the long response. Thank you!

Henrywildeberry Great response! I really enjoy the discussion of choices we make toward long term solutions that improve our world, in food choices, clothing choices, and everything else. You got in really well with all of my friends down here and wish you were closer. I hope we can ride lots more in the future.
