Graham Strang's Roots and Route #374
Filmed July 16, 2021
Many times when I buy music on Discogs, I go in knowing what pressing I want, and lately I've been noticing that certain sellers are not listing their albums correctly, causing me to receive incorrect pressings of albums.

The matrix runout (outside the labels) is the best starting point to determine a specific pressing, it’s usually all you need.

There's only three reasons for this: the seller doesn't pay attention when listing, has two copies and an employee pulling, or a poster changes the description on the page after seller correctly lists it. I had one guy who listed cd with a different cover, on a different label, and without the bonus track. He said he had 15,000 cds yet to list and such errors sometimes occur. Yikes! Be careful leaving negatives or even complaining about petty issues especially if you'll need that seller for potential future transactions. As Machiavelli said it's best to let little slights go. Furthermore, return shipping is no automatically covered by paypal as now you have to fight for it.

Happened to me a couple of times and I just started collecting. I look for first US pressings of Elvis records. Pretty expensive for me because most of them I have to buy in the US and I live in Holland. Also no use in sending them back because that would only cost me more. So now I just ask the seller if the record is listed right before buying and if they confirm... hope for the best!

Yes! Agreed. And equally important is that the condition of the lp is in accordance to "Goldmine Grading" system and not some fococta grade somebody pulled out of their butt.

Yup and I’m brand new with discogs and that worried me and reading the feedbacks of the seller is a lot of work. I’ve been collecting for 40 years and 90% of what I’ve own or had were in nm- condition. And I would like to keep that standard without having to always pay the high prices. So o can tel at a glance what grade it should be. I never minded used records, as long as they are in great condition. So I want the condition that used buyers go by and that’s btwn. Nm and VG+.

I've been collecting music for 50 years, and I'm considering selling my phonographs, CDs, DVDs, BDs, SACDs, and even an Apple-shaped thumb drive containing The Beatles catalog in 96/24 FLAC files. One of my considerations is whether to photograph the runouts and barcodes on these discs and packaging. I think you've made a great case that I should, regardless of my ask price.
@GrahamStrang

Under normal circumstances I would say that isn't necessary, but I do know beatles collectors are quite picky and would really appreciate your extra effort 😁

One of the inclusions on Discogs is actually the runout matrix engraved on the dead wax of records. And actually, that's one way of the seller knowing which pressing they have in their hands. Here's the thing with Discogs, and being a new seller. You are going to find out quick that what you think the value of something you have is just not what it's going to sell for. The good in Discogs is that it's such a huge community and a lot to choose from. And generally, super safe for buyers, since all responsibility lies fully on the seller. So, if the post office loses or damages the package, unfortunately, the seller is at a loss for it. Adversely, being such a dominant marketplace, price points have a tendency to drop super low based on seller competition. And, if something is more scarce, prices inflate ridiculously. It's definitely a more buyer friendly marketplace. If you buy something and are unhappy with the condition. Or, it's not the pressing as listed, you simply contact the seller, return the item. And get a PayPal refund. PayPal has always, and in almost every circumstance, sides with the buyer. And Ultimately, if you make a purchase and a problem occurs, you will get your money back. It's just a matter of a little wait in time. Which, as a grumpy Discogs seller brings me to my final conclusion: selling on Discogs is way more of a risk than a reward. Because, now, you are forced to use PayPal for any and all payments. Whom, always sides with the buyer. I've been selling on discogs for years. I've had records damaged by postal carriers returned, and took a loss on refund. I've mailed records with signature confirmation on delivery, and the buyer says they never got the package and it was somebody else's signature. And PayPal refunded the buyer during a dispute resolution. If you're going to sell on discogs. Just know, you as a seller, have to accept all responsibility. Even for problems beyond your control.

I disagree with your sister! As far as you being picky! Only true collectors/historians KNOW the difference!! I feel your pain! I believe that Discogs SHOULD be where you get better sellers who care!! I bought a 78 and got it broken!! because they media mailed it!! 😭😭😭😭

This is excellent advice, Graham. Serious yikes @ some of the comments on here tho. Some people are too lazy for basic due diligence as sellers. Imagine thinking someone is a "nightmare buyer" simply because they want to get what they bought. Imagine thinking Discogs is eBay and it's the people using it correctly who are the problem

I just got on Discogs and even tho it’s now so much easier finding and buying records now, just the buying is a little tricky and hard to navigate. Just checking who has great reviews selling and trying to figure out who better with pricing and grading. I know every new site there needs to be a learning curve but kind of overwhelming. And trying to figure how to sell could be challenging.

Also on my first purchase on Discogs, I pressed the box to agreed to sellers terms and I guess after that I pressed to buy or commit to buy. While putting in the credit card but not finished, I wanted to check eBay and see what was there also for the same tittle. I should’ve done that first , but figured it was still on bc I haven’t submitted my cc and I hate finding a better copy later and cheaper or finding there’s tons of copies. So I decided to just get the copy from Discogs. Then I checked my cart and it was empty and o also couldn’t find it in the listing. Then I found it in my purchase and even tho it was ok, I learned it after you press buy or that box, you were committed . Which was fine, but good to know on how it works. Also I was like where’s the message button and what if you don’t pay bc it was an error, so you just ignore and it’ll drop off or there’s a way to contact the seller? I know on eBay they discourage some messaging to not have ppl. so direct sales. Or did I miss the message option and can you cancel an order? Also, does discogs get involved to help you fix a dispute or you’re on your own?

When you look up something, you get these multiple pop ups. Does that mean you have to check all pop ups and look at different listings? Meaning if I look at one of the pop up, are there going to be more options in the other pop up or one should be fine. So what the return policy of something goes wrong? Meaning do some sellers have return policies or most don’t take returns? And how come when I look at the listing from my phone and how come nobody post photos or the record? Also it’s easy to switch covers and media and I’m sure if you’re not looking for where it made, you should be fine, if original and matches.

I have about 1,500 45's and around 1000 LP's that I would LOVE to post on Discogs but I can't!! - I've tried so many times to post them and I don't get to first base because the setting up the shipping policy bit is so NOT user friendly and convoluted that I just can't figure it out! SO annoying. I've tried to call the folks at Discogs and apparently they don't want to hear from their customers, and I have yet to find any PROPER KZfaq videos that show how to post records for sale on Discogs!

I just started to list my collection on discogs with the intention of selling. The site makes it easy to find pressings based on the matrix number. They also have clear definitions of ratings. It's tedious but I'm just going one crate at a time.
