Well having never owned a Gibson I can’t even imagine letting one go. I’m not overly enthralled by Gibson guitars, I love the shapes and history and have respect for the company. But epiphones have filled my desire to own something close to a gibson. But I understand the relationship or lack thereof with certain guitars, I have a couple that just sit in their case pretty much untouched since I bought them. But I’m too sentimental to trade or sell them. Anyways, love this channel and the content. I work graveyard shifts and coming home to watch these is quite relaxing and enjoyable! Thanks for sharing your guitars and riffs and keep up the good work!

Gibsons can be great, but like all guitars you have to find the right one. I’ve had 4 Gibsons (Les Paul’s, SG’s, ES335) and the midtown will stay with me forever… my Eastman T59 I sold because o didn’t like the feel, even though it sounded great. Horses for courses!

I have almost pulled a trigger on an Eastman antique varnish a couple of weeks ago, and you were a big influence for that decision, Colin! :) But then I thought about it once more: will I still want my dream Gibson R8 afterwards? Absolutely! Probably not the next week or month, but still.. And with the current price for a varnish series being 2550 Euros in Germany I am already half way there. As someone has well put it in a different video: "I always thought it was too expensive to pay 5000$ for a guitar, so I'd spent a 15 000$ on cheaper guitars over the last decade instead of buying THE one." So I've put my money in an envelope and I think I know what I'll get me for Christmas hehe. I guess at these price points - above 2 grand - it's not about playability or quality anymore - it's about fulfilling your dreams.

I have a nice r8. It was supposed to be a plain top but has nice flaming in it. I got lucky with that because I ordered it sight unseen. I was a little bummed about how thick the neck was and wondered if I should have gone with an r9 instead for another grand or so but now I’m used to it and love it immensely! I try not to be a guitar snob, and these days I mostly buy cheap guitars and fix them up but sometimes nothing compares to the real deal. Good luck on getting yours when you get around to it. You won’t be disappointed. In the meantime my next nice guitar is going to be an Eastman 335 style. At this point in life I’m done spending Gibson level money on stuff.

I think the Eastman has the looks. Loving that colour. It’s so easy to have regrets, especially when hearing things side by side. The Eastman sounds different definitely but I can hear that it has more sustain. I think that you will love that Eastman once the Gibson has gone. I think it sounds great. I’ve got 3 strats that I’m forever comparing. I have got into the habit of putting guitars away, as it’s too distracting having them out together. No two guitars sound the same, they react differently to pedals and eq and need to be approached differently in terms of where you have the volume and tone pots positioned. That Eastman is one seriously nice guitar so stop whinging 😂

For me, if i already had the r4 i would not swap that for the Eastman as the difference for me was minimal. If i did not own either i would go for the Eastman i think they deserve a chance as the quality/price ratio is better. IMO

This is a rational reply. Unless you need the money holding onto an actual Gibson reissue makes more sense. That said I see a couple Eastmans in my future. And why not when I can get two for the price of a Gibson and have some change left over.

Hi Colin, great to see you doing a comparison between 2 top level guitars, esp. given your history with the R9. They are clearly both beautiful instruments and I think it's great that you have let go of the Gibson to a new home. Sitting here in HK what I do respect most about all this this is that at no point did you bring the "USA vs China' made thing. Before I went pro I worked in the biggest music shop in Wellington, NZ in the early 70s, when I was 18 / 19 and I learnt a lot about guitars - I was a star salesman. My boss used to take me out the Gibson import agent to get first look at what came in and I would pick the best for the shop and tell the boss of the import company which ones to send back to America (one bass had a banana neck that was hilarious). We are guitar players and, despite politics and/or prejudice, IMHO it comes down to the instrument. I have lived in HK for 40 years and worked with musicians throughout Asia and met people who make instruments - they just love doing what they do no matter of the politics of the country. We benefit from their love of music and craft. All that said - I think it's cool that you let go of the Gibson and, personally, as a guy who used to have to set up guitars in the shop, I do applaud Eastman for doing the Tailpiece + Bridge thing - I am not a fan of single wraparound tailpiece / bridge combos because intonation can be a problem. Hope this not contraversial (delete if so). Enjoy the Eastman - I'm hoping I can try a few out in the next few weeks!

The Eman is top shelf, it doesn't have to play or sound better to be amazing. I thought it was well matched. And dare I say..easier on the eyes. The real question is how it feels? Cuz it sounds as good. If it feels great, no regrets...light years more value..

Hey Colin. The differences are so miniscule that even if I had a preference of one over the other, it would not matter which one I was playing as far as the sound coming through the amp. I think a lot of people overlook the amplifier and effects. If you have a really good quality amp and effects, the more expensive guitar's natural sound vs another lesser expensive guitar's natural sound are usually lost in the mix. Enjoy your new guitar, both of you!

My R8 brings out my best playing, but it’s hard to quantify why…as you alluded to Colin, just something about it. It also happens to be 8.3 Lbs. I’m hearing more of the prototypical Gibson upper mids with the R4, the Eastman sounds a bit more low mids focused to me. They both sound great, but I don’t know that one is a substitute for the other. Good stuff, thanks Colin! ✌️

So thank you. I will preface this by stating I am a Gibson stargazer. I love looking at Gibson guitars but I now equally love looking at Eastman guitars I've just discovered That Eastman made a SB59 limited black with Seymour Duncan pearly gate pick ups so I've gone from perving on a Gibson classic to perving on the Eastman and being honest I prefer playing Eastman guitars. Regarding your R4 I think your comment was telling about the headstock. It wasn't about the brand for you anymore it was about the feel and all of us on our journeys come to that enlightenment I hope. Cheers again mate, see you next week. G

Can't go wrong with Eastman - it's a matter of personal preference at this level, and preferences do change over time, I think. The only LP analogue I don't see a lot of people trying out is FGN's Neo-Classic series - which I guess they don't get sued for anymore, because FGN USA is showing them (FGN USA site has a limited selection of the larger model base FGN makes). I have an Expert Flame, which is a lot like a LP but more like the Knaggs/Huber variants - a bit more carve, a more stylized lower horn, but essentially maple cap on mahogany body with mahogany neck in an HH config, but it's got the single vol/single tone two knobber Ibanez style config where the Neo-Classic tracks with the LP config with a 4 knob control scheme.

I've spent yesterday afternoon listening to your episodes on these japanese Les Pauls while I was making sushi (🍣 lol) as I've been considering getting one myself instead of the "real thing" which would save me a pretty penny... I've put my eyes on a stunning looking Tokai ULS132GT (Gold Top + P90s) and an equally beautiful 1977 Greco EG500 with a cherry Burst flamed maple top (both made in Japan) and I was wondering your opinion about those... I also wanted to thank you for this content you make, I absolutely love the time you put into these hour long videos and the fact that you take your time, please never change! Might not be much but I just subbed btw ❤ (If we were neighbours I'd totally let you review my 1965 Galanti Grand Prix and 1961 Eko 400 V2 in Gold Metal Flake finish, the spaghetti western machine! 😂)

I prefer the Gibson, it sounded more open and dynamic to me than the Eastman, not even close, but I'm listening to it through KZfaq, I'm not in the room. soooo,. I enjoy your videos very much, you're more of a working mans' guitarist I think, and I like that! Your videos aren't overproduced like so many are these days, yours are raw, informative, funny, very entertaining, and relatable! I just want to mention to you that DC Resistance is not a very good way to measure a pickups output, while it might be a factor it is a small one, and lots of folks make this mistake. The things that really determine the output of a pickup are,... number of winds, magnet material and strength, and type of wire material. Those are the main factors in pickup output. Using Dimarzio just as a reference, (because they use a number to rate the output of their pickups). The higher the number the hotter the pickup, for instance,... .... A Dimarzio AT-1 is a medium output pickup, (320), and it's DC resistance is, 16.50k,... on the other hand a Dimarzio Super Distortion is a high output pickup, (425), and it's DC resistance is, 13.68. The difference between the nitro finishes is just the number of coats used I believe. I don't know how many coats either guitar has, but I'm betting the Gibson has a lot more than the Eastman has.

As someone who's favourite guitar overall are Les Pauls, that classic gold top p90 is one I'd hang on to. For me Gold Top is my favourite finish, p90s are just wonderful for so many styles, and it being a Les Paul. It's pretty much the pinnacle of guitars as far as I'm concerned. Can't afford one, and for some inexplicable reason Epiphone don't do one. So I've got my eye on one of those new Gretsch Jets with similar p90s and a chunky one piece bridge and tail-- it's the closest I can get for under £600. They also come in some really nice colours so you might be interested to take a look. The model is G5210-P90. The one in Fairlane Blue is gorgeous, and it doesn't have the stupid Bigsby. Speaking of P90s my latest guitar is a Casino Coupe, which has a smaller body just like the 339 and most usefully it has far better access to the top of the fretboard-- one thing that I really don't like about the full sized Casino is the neck is too deeply buried into the body.

You should check out the Burny RLG60P, it’s their Goldtop Les Paul with P90’s and would be within your budget! It’s one of the 2 Burny I have, it’s a great guitar and quite an accurate Les Paul copy! (More so than Epiphone’s!)

Hi Colin, great review! I think you were able to send the message that both guitars are great. We all would buy and keep as many guitars as possible if there we’re not any issues associated in doing that. Gibsons are expensive and not perfect, but they sound great, feel great and look amazing. I had a chance to play an Eastman T486 at a shop and was so impressed with its quality. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!

You know my choice already, but I agree with everything you said today. I'm glad this is your pickle and not mine. My ear says the Gibby makes your play style sound like an artist because all those between the lines noises that come out and expose the real core of your output... the Easty sounds very nice especially sometimes...like when you really dig in... however the compressed sort of tone squishes the nuances it seems and that would lend to hearing your licks in a different light.... like competitive or open to criticism rather than enjoying an artist.

I have wanted a P90 guitar for a while. My preference on the sound in your video was the Gibson, that is a great guitar. If I was going to choose which one to buy, I would get the Eastman. I am even considering an Epiphone Les Paul Special or a Revstar. I love my Eastman SB59, so I have confidence that the other things Eastman make will be good quality.

I love Eastmans mate. I have two and one I own is the SB59 Goldtop with the humbuckers and I will never sell it. I hope you don’t regret selling the Gibbo too much, but you have had fun with it and as you say there is a lot of money wrapped up in that guitar. I would love to see you check out Gordon Smith guitars one day, I have recently bought a custom built T Style to my own design and spec, wonderful instrument. Keep ‘em coming Col…. I have worked on an Eastman guitar it was the double cut junior model and the issue the owner had was the wrap over bridge posts were starting to lean forwards and the guitar wouldn't stay in tune ! The issue was although the guitar is made out of mahogany it is a softer mahogany hence the bridge posts leaning forward ! Even the modern Gibson guitars no longer use Honduran mahogany and there have been videos on KZfaq where some one took out a tuner and the wood were the screw was came out like powder ! As we know there are different grades of all woods and to build a guitar to a price point means using less expensive woods ! It's a shame with the Eastman because they use top grade fittings and pickups. I removed the tuners on the Eastman and once I removed the tuner there was a lot of wood dust behind the tuner just like the Gibson Video I saw ! The tuning problem was because some of the screw were loose on the machine heads also the ageing gunk that was used made the tuning sticky so I cleaned the tuner post and polished them and all is well and the guy who owns the guitar is really happy and I must admit it is now a really nice guitar. In reality for a guitar of this price you shouldn't have these issues but I have seen this on vintage guitars as well. I would keep the Gibson after all you paid for it and the residuals will be better . How about checking out the PRS SE McCarty 594 Single Cut !

Hot take - it's not about the resale value, the name on the headstock or even the way it sounds. It's about how the guitar makes you feel. Whether you spend $600 or $6k, get something that brings you joy. But, also don't buy a $6k guitar because you THINK it will bring you joy.

Colin. I don't know where to start. Firstly, great video mate. Everything about it was top notch. Told a story and the ending felt a bit sad ....... like saying goodbye to someone you'll never see again, and the playing at the end summed it up beautifully. I like the idea of Eastman guitars and I'm currently thinking of getting a hollow body with p90's and a bigsby, like a Casino. Anyway, from the souunds in the vid I prefer the Gibson. I don't dislike the Eastman but for what I like the Gibson sounds more unique, maybe because its brighter. It probably is the lightness of the wood along with the wrapover bridge/ tailpiece. Your playing sounded inspired on the outro, both on the Gibson and the Eastman. I think moving on from the Gibson with the idea of buying more guitars to review for the channel makes perfect sense so fair play mate!

When I chose a guitar it because of the feel and comfort. Sound is important but that can often remedied if there are issues but feel and comfort not so easily. I have 4 Gibson LPs there is something about the feel to them that I haven't found in any other guitars I own US and Mexican fender Strats s& Teles and they are lovely a Gretch and a Peavey Tracer, a old 1970s Nippon made Tele copy and a 2010 squire affinity strat as well but again there is something about the feel and cut shall see say about the Gibson LP that just feels like home. I have a number a Fender basses and Yamaha and others basses but that another story. Thanks for the clip hopefully you wont miss the Gibson to much. Cheers.

Both brands make great guitars and these two were both great examples of what each company is capable of... in this video, for me, it came down to the pickups... the Gibson pickups presented each notes fundamental with greater clarity and had all that swirling harmonic content around the fundamental... Lollar makes great pickups, but not every set is great... and that happens to any pup builder from time to time... this particular set fell short for me... each notes fundamental got lost as the notes were just too gritty sounding, no swirling harmonics ... the pickups sway this for me, the win goes to the Gibson this time... :-) Great content Colin... as always, well done !!

You definitely open up on these two guitars. The Gibson does have a very slight “edge” for sound but the Eastman is a brand new instrument that hasn’t had any play or aging on it.. I always feel that has a bit to do with it. That Eastman is no slouch and I think given some playing time and a little bit of aging so to speak it will be a phenomenal (already is) instrument. Excellent video!

It's Friday, it's Colin, it's the best yt show around. I am immune to Les Paul "gas" no matter the brand. The shape does not push my "magic" button. That said if you read this and you are single cutaway/LP style enjoyer I hope you have found your "the one", it's the worst when you finally figure out what it is you look for and you set out to look for it and you can't seem to find it. Add Gibson pricing to that search... Just Oof... I do not envy anyone going through that. Peace and have a fabulous weekend

Hey Colin. Really enjoy all your informative and in depth demos and shoot outs, thank you for taking the time. This video brought out the therapist in me (I am not a therapist!). Here is what I heard you say: 1) I love Les Pauls but I don't enjoy playing Les Pauls. 2) The Gibson sounds and feels better than the Eastman. 3) I want to love the Eastman but I know I will end up selling it. My opinion was that the Gibson was better in every respect. It has the right shape and name so it looks cooler but also sounds and feels better. Yours is also very lightweight and that makes it a special one in most players' eyes. However, please let it go and don't try to replicate a guitar you hardly played anyway. You won't miss something you never used (unless it is for investment purposes). The Eastman was essential to understand your Les Paul journey but not a keeper. Life is short. On to the Teles...
