Hi Ellen - I've just discovered you and I've been watching/listening to your videos as I mount, pack and price my artwork for a local pop-up shop that my work will be sold in from this weekend until the new year. Your advice as I'm doing all of this is so so SO valuable as I wonder where this shop takes me and how/if I'm going to handle it as a career. Thank you for your guidance, because im definitely lost. Ive almost reached the point where joy is no longer a part of me, i want to put this pain i have into my art. I quit my job, abused drugs, ran out of money, lost contact with family and friends, hardly leave my house, and im on the brink of lossing everything. Not looking for pity, because there are so many others are out there in the same boat. I only hope my artwork will connect to those who, like me, look for inspiration. Im gonna try to get my job back and get to work again, ive had enough sitting around feeling sorry for myself. Thanks again for the wisdom you shared, time to get things straight.

I am so grateful for this video! I’ve been considering selling my art online and this has helped me start mind mapping where I need to begin! It is very daunting!! I’m terrified, I was even super terrified by starting my own KZfaq Channel, but I’m so much more excited now that You’ve helped out with these amazing guidelines. Really appreciate these tips, thanks Ellen. I'm gradually creating and uploading artwork onto Displate. Apart from Facebook and Instagram don't have my own personal website, for numerous reasons; I have only a few finished paintings & I've also heard other established artists say that they felt personal websites were overrated. They based this on the reality that people rarely make the effort (I'm like this, although I will for artists I'm really blown away by and emotionally invested in) to visit a personal website when the artist is so available via social media.

That is a really good thought, Michael, and I appreciate you sharing it here. My website is a security blanket for me. I, being reliant on Etsy for much of my income, have never felt comfortable with the idea of directing traffic solely there (on the chance that if, for some reason they decide to close my shop or go out of business...not likely, but still) however, customers still prefer to connect with me elsewhere...there's no dialogue there vs. social media.

Yeah that's a great point Ellen, that is a dilemma. Etsy, Displate & the Social media sites are all at risk of falling out of public favour & becoming the next MySpace. It rings true what you say about the personal website demonstrating a level professionalism. You have certainly convinced me, I totally see the merit and importance of it now. There is also that nagging feeling of being also like a kind of passive marketing agent for these websites mentioned, it is nice to stand out as your own separate entity.

Hi Ellen.... I've been around the block a couple of times but am still searching for more avenues to show my art further. I have yet to spread my wings among many social networks and sites, basically from lack of how to use them. Your thoughts, whether basic or not open a lot of doors for beginners and your point about knowing what you want to accomplish in the beginning to target your audience is an excellent one to really think about. As far as websites, I agree with you, however a good looking website stands out above the crowds when it comes to professionalism, so it's important to think about content and visual appeal as well as just owning one and dumping your art in it. Good points for your viewers. I look forward to your next one, thanks.

What a great point, John - and thank you for bringing that up regarding a good looking website. This is something I've not put much thought into I'm embarrassed to say. I may need to clean house and spruce mine up a bit! I know you've asked about Pinterest and I wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten your question. I have to say though, of all the platforms I use, Pinterest is the one I seem to neglect the most so I may not be the best person to offer an opinion 😆 I'm working on it though!

I am having a difficult time with the using of sites as well John. Somebody said TAG me on Instagram when you get this done...um, embarrased to say..but how do I do that..lol. I only have facebook and pinterest...and on facebook in the art groups...but I think I need a website now...but dont know how to do that..maybe I can find a youtube video on it?..so much to learn now..But I am trying! HAGD!

Hi DeeJay28.... my major source of social networking is LinkedIn as it is business related. I'm on facebook but don't find it very productive. I started Instagram but I'm having difficulty transferring photos from my computer to my ipad (which I dislike using) just to get photos on the site... not sure about "tagging" either. We're probably missing a lot because of our ignorance, but I'm not as young as I used to be and learning this tech stuff is a struggle. There are a lot of great youtube videos on pretty much everything so that would be a good place to start. Ellen has a great channel with lots of good content and info, you can learn a lot from her as well.... and her art is wonderful! I do have a website through Bluehost, which I would not recommend because of cost but that would be a good thing to have if you could get traffic to it. As an artist you may want to try ArtStation. I just signed up for their pro package, at the time it was $72 a year and they have a great website package that displays your work professionally, as well as they now have the capability to allow you to sell digitally, later they will have traditional hardcopy sales. This just started a month or so ago so I'm kind of excited about it. No worries about hackers or website issues, they take care of it all. As soon as my Bluehost contract expires I think I will be setting up shop there. My bluehost, wordpress site was hacked in December and it cost me a bundle to clean it up.... stay away from them and wordpress if you can. Its my struggle to sell online. I am an artist for almost 18 years and i never tried that somebody buy my painting outside my country. I wish i could sell it in an easy way, in ebay or in amazon. thanks for your video and hope this will give me more idea on your coming videos.

Wow. You have helped think about things in a different way. Because I was the person saying, “I’m going to make this jewelry and paint and go to flea markets and bam everyone is going to 😍 love it.” And......now I’m like girl did you hear what Ellen just told you? Back up, think about the 5 steps and then revisit your grand plan of being a bazillionaire. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Looking at your video gave me a little more courage to take that next step which is actually your no. 1 piece of advice.
