The Updated Ref 54 tenor is really really special and I hope they keep it in their lineup for years to come.

I've played new 54 and 36 about a year ago......beautiful horns, but I love my yamaha custom 875 more🙂

I have owned all three horns and 100% agree with you, the 875(EX) is the top pick of those horns mentioned.

Very nice sounding horn. Or the sounds that can be gotten from...but for me I find it hard to justify the asking price. Over buying a near mint vintage horn. Even if the intonation might be better. Why buy a modern horn that tries to "sound like" a vintage horn instead of actually buying a vintage horn (e.g. Martin, King, Buscher, Conn...old sought after model year Mark VI...)? Unless you simply have money to burn. Now had Selmer-Paris put out a version of the Ref 54 (or 36) in SOLID silver..MAYBE...metal type makes DOES make a difference in the sound we hear as minute as subtle as that is NOT finishes!! : Finishes just make the horns look "pretty".....to some buyers....

Thanks for this very interesting review. Given this assessment, why would anyone be interested in an "older" Reference 54? Is there a point in the serial number sequence where it is possible to distinguish the updated version from the original version?
@dawkesmusic2 жыл бұрын
Hi Roy - We don't have a serial number sequence 'mark' where they changed so to speak and Selmer don't either (they're not exactly great at communicating these things!). It's easy enough to tell from the bands that go around the body/bow and bow/bell junctions, the newer types are much thinner, the older ones are very chunky. Plus there are less straps down the body where the pillars are soldered on. We appreciate that's easier to see when you're looking at them back-to-back but the bands is the easiest thing to spot.

How does the Ref 36 compare and has that also had similar updates?
@dawkesmusic4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it had similar updates, as did all the SA80 series of Saxophones. The Ref 36 is generally a little wider, and more 'spread' sounding due to the larger body/bow and bow/bell junction.

Thanks. From youtube videos alone, I think I prefer the sound of the 36 although I'm really tempted by the 875EX at the moment. The black is beautiful

I have an older reference 54 - what is the difference in the new ones?
@dawkesmusic5 жыл бұрын
Essentially the new ones have had some weight removed. The old model had heavy ribs that ran down the body where the posts were soldered onto, on the new model these have been reduced and some pillars are soldered directly to the tube. The bow/bell and bow/body fittings are also significantly trimmed down. Essentially they've put it on a diet and thus it plays with more vibrancy in our opinion.

I'm sure Selmer is a great horn! I played a Selmer Mark VI for over a decade. But, it appears to me that they are pricing themselves out of the market! They are great horns,, but.......
