Even though I don’t like doing it :)
In this video I will be converting a 1 3/8” thick old exterior door from its (not original) cheap mortise lock set to a standard keyed entrance modern Schlage F series tubular style lock. Enjoy!

Not gonna lie I chuckled at those tiny knipex pliers when you showed them before. I take it back, those little things are legit.

I’ve started finding myself using them everyday now! They aren’t “comfortable” to use since they are so little but they are awesome nonetheless! Probably will end up being the best $30 I’ve spent on a tool in a while

I lived in some apartments that were built in 1939 and they had the same looking locks. They were old Corbin mortise locks with two toggle buttons on the side and thumb turn on the inside. I loved them locks.

the first few comments made me realize I needed to post why I went wrap ;) There is a modernization kit with two flat plates and a edge plate that can also be used for these conversions that sometimes looks/works better. I chose to go wrap for this because of thin door, good gap, and existing edge damage around latch. In a different scenario it is my preference to use the flat cover plates as well (but I don’t like their edge strip, it’s too bendy so I use the commercial version) but it’s pretty dicey on the thin doors :)

First house I rented was built in 1927, this house looks to be built similar, kitchen, porch, etc. It's now a historic home, though moved to a museum. It was the honeymoon home built for my landlady Mrs Ghirardi. I'd go to her farmhouse to pay rent and visit every month. She was in her eighties then. Great video Jason. Thanks!

yep! All the houses around certain neighborhoods are just like this, 20’s-50’s eras. It’s uncommon for me to not be at one of these every day so I get a lot of practice (you probably notice me eye rolls at the 1000 nail strike patch up 😂)

This video and the video on redrilling smaller holes to standard size were both very helpful to me in my area. That is, if I can't talk them into letting me restore their antiques. I had one of these just two weeks ago, and I'll have another home with 2 similar doors in the coming weeks. That cardboard trick is huge! Thanks so much for making these videos. You made me nervous drilling with the wrap on :)

I do a lot of those old doors. I can’t help but to think every time I do one that the hardware is worth more than the door itself. Those wraps make a great solid lock with the latch mounted metal to metal.

I've found for F-series knobs that the Lab plug follower for Schlage (LFT000) has perfect curved tips that match the ovals on those compressible cylinders. Though I suppose the best follower is the one you actually have in front of you. :) Great video!

Happy 4th Jason! I recently got into restoring these old mortise locks. Once you buff off some of the old paint etc, the plates and knobs reveal beautiful American metal and some with ornate etchings. I clean/repair them down to the springs and plan to retro-fit all of the interior doors in my house with them. Each room will have its own skeleton key as well. My Daughter gave me a beautiful old copper knob mortise for Father's Day that is epic. Thanks for the Vid!

Personally I like using the do-jo remodeler kit that come with 3 seperate pieces. The wrap plates are good in a pinch when there damage. But I think it ends up being s nicer looking job in the ends. I've managed to stock up on the older kwikset kits before the stops making them.. those work nice in but locks
@selock

I thought about using that but since this one had existing edge damage I decided to go wrap :)

Sometimes this is, sometimes the modernization kit is a better choice. Pre existing edge damage & good gap, so went with wrap

With the shape of that building, door, paint, lock, and latch, I'm unsure why someone would even bother to pay someone to fix the latter two first xD

What do you think of customizing a piece of wood to fill the mortised gap. I was thinking of adding saw dust and glue to fill any voids and tapping my customized wood into the mortised space. I might add a few wood dowels across the width of the door where my customized is, for insurance. Then I’d proceed to hole saw for standard lock. The door is in good shape, so would rather not add a plate.
@selock
@selock Жыл бұрын
Absolutely valid! I don’t like using wraps at all but on some properties/doors it’s not worth the carpentry. I would never willingly put one of these on a nice door.

When my 1930s house was renovated in the 1980s, several of the mortice locks were changed over by filling in the gap with builders bog. When set, install new lock as for a new door. Still working.
@ivanobar1
@ivanobar1 Ай бұрын
Is it like bondo? I filled a mortise lock soace in a door with a customized piece of wood, a little saw dust, and gorilla glue. I wanted to maintain the doors integrity and strength. But if builder’s bog does that I’ll save myself the trouble if customizing a piece.

I am having to change my locks which are these type. I have looked for this wrap plate and cannot find it in the stores near me here in Canada. May I know where I can look to find them? This video is the most suitable for me as a newbie. Thank you!
@selock
@selock 11 ай бұрын
hmm not sure about Canada but it should be listed under door wrap, door wrap plate, remodeler plate, etc. Just make sure you get the door thickness, and backset (measurement from edge of door to center of lock) correct

If the screws on the outside of the door were removed, would that compromise the security of the lock? Also, is it worth filling in the hollow core left by the removal of the mortise lock? I have a front door im planning to replace the mortise with an updated lock.
@selock
@selock 5 ай бұрын
no, because the locks are still "clamping" it on the door. The only way it "might" is if there are large holes all the way out to the point if you did bend the corner back, you ""might"" have access to the latch to do something, but this is a very unlikely scenario. Yes if you are good at carpentry then by all means fill in whatever you would like. The most ideal way to do this aesthetically would be to patch everything and paint over, then re-prep for the lock
@misslady8848

How are you securing the latchplate with a gaping hole in the door? For me, there was nothing for the screwes to screw into. Or maybe I need shorter screws?🤔
@selock
@selock 10 ай бұрын
Some wrap plates are designed to go over the latch and have a flat inside, which is probably what you got if you purchased from a box store. These wrap plates (Don-Jo brand) have a threaded nut and recessed face so the latch goes on the outside for it. The machine (threaded) screws come with it and attach the latch to the body of the wrap. Any of the flat face type won't work for this type of job unless you pop rivet the latch to the inside of the flat style wrap
@dasledogg64
@dasledogg64 9 ай бұрын
I had the exact same question. I had this huge 3x5 hole and didn't know I'd I needed to fill it. My face plate does have the recessed face to handle the situation.
