As a North Carolina smokey mountain hunter, the best advice I could give is to look for fields with rivers or ponds on or near the property. Valleys are great, especially when there are stands of timber on one or both sides as that is where turkeys tend to roost especially when a body of water is in close proximity to the field and timber. In my experience, the turkeys have, for the most part, flown off the mountain timber overlooking a field in the valley. Google maps in 3d mode and a gis tax map are great for pre-scouting. Good luck this season fellow hunter!

I specifically hunt mountain gobblers in western Arkansas. I use a horse to get around. Mountain eastern gobblers are the toughest birds to hunt. If they've been messed with before, standard tactics probably won't work. Being a good caller doesn't mean much on a public land mountain eastern; being smart and patient is the key. If you can get above them when calling will help alot. You can call them down hill, but you normally will always have the advantage being above them (if you can). They also don't like to cross things, this doesn't mean they won't, but usually don't. They get hung up easily. Nothing like some Rios I hunt occasionally where I've seen gobblers fly across lake channels etc. Don't expect a mountain gobbler to be that easy. One year I hunted around gobbler that had been messed with. He would gobble his head off every morning but as soon as you hit the hen call you would hear him gobbling further and further away. Finally one morning I just used my hoot owl call to keep him gobbling and I figured out which way he was going and headed him off. He finally walked up on me and I shot and missed. They're tough birds to hunt and are known to make grown men cry, Goodluck.
