Senate and House committee leaders have introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at banning the import of Russian uranium.
The bill, called the American Uranium Security Act of 2023, seeks to ensure that the United States is not reliant on foreign sources for the critical material.
The bill would prohibit the Department of Energy from using funds to buy Russian uranium, and it would also establish a program to support the domestic uranium industry.
The sponsors of the bill hope that it will protect national security interests, promote American energy independence, and support domestic job creation.
The bill introduced today is a Senate companion legislation to last month's HR 1042 bill, which seeks to prohibit the importation of unirradiated low-enriched uranium that is produced in the Russian Federation.
