After watching your video. I saw you had the right idea. Instead of side pontoons being an extension of the boat's rear sponson. Try moving the side pontoons, you made up to the mid of the boat. Then stretch the height up to match the Gunwhale. Then straight down to match the bottom natural angle or waterline. Whichever you prefer. You will find you don't need more than 2 feet long to greatly increase the stability. if you put an angled draft in the front of each pontoon to meet the boat. You will find there will be a lot less haul drag. Plus the location makes a great place to add a fishing pole side rack holder.

Side mounts: try making them the same height as the sides all together and taper them back towards the front. I’ve got pods on my 14’ Jon boat and it’s great. I really want to beef up more side to side. Had some ideas off jet ski and seadoo.

Agree with an angled bottom tapering upward on the bottom of the side pods. Thinking of giving the water a path to get past the boat without a sudden squared off hard edge. It is harder to fab, but fluid dynamics are important.

Try taking the front of the side pods and carve them upwards like the front of boat not to the side. It will create another planning surface and keep the water going down and under the side pods and yes cut the tails off.

Already cut the tails off, ran it and it helped a lot. Going to do exactly like you and others have suggested and run them further forward and under cut so they force water under the boat.

i had pontoons on my canoe with a 5 hp Briggs and Stratton outboard and i had some of the same problems and found if they were just at or above the water at speed i lost the drag\splash drawbacks and still had the same stability when standing and using the trolling motor so if it was mine i would move them up so they were flush with the deck

I'm a welder fabricator in the Florida area that's been doing modifications to small boats for 40 plus years, the front of your pods are shaped improperly the front of the pods should match the shape of the front and the bottom of the Jon boat. Do not taper them outward, you're scooping water which slows the boat down and makes the rear of the boat dig in. By reshaping the front of the pods properly you're actually gaining planning surface in the boat should go actually faster. On your mud drive you need to put a horizontal plane on it just in front of the prop so that when the boat is moving along the horizontal plane will operate parallel to the surface and keep the prop buried in the water you may have to experiment with different sizes. The horizontal plane is not parallel to the shaft, the back edge of it should actually be tilted up so it's acting like a dive plane on a sub. Add a bendable trim tab to the skeg below the mud drive unit and bend it so that at full power it matches the torque that the engine is producing.

@@SendItJonBoats I notice a similar problem that you mentioned, there isn't enough water for the prop. Now we are fighting rice straw as well. My idea is to have less water drag and allow more water to go through not around the vessel. Making it possible for the shaft can be shorter. We mostly only run (go-devils) a.k.a also mud motors like the one in the video.

@@SendItJonBoats I started out with a basic and cheap cav plate from mud skipper. They bolt right on and should be a quick and cheap fix. You want the prop to be right the top of the water and that cav plate can be adjusted to help that. Watching your video I almost think a shorter shaft might be your ticket. Then you would be inside that wake and may not need that cav plate at all. I’m switching to a surface drive before next season. I’ve waved and eased on by plenty of stuck and broke $15-20k Alwelds while running 20 mph in 4 inches of water full of logs and stumps. Lol. Of course I went back to checked on ‘em and pulled several of them back to the boat ramp. I like my longtail. I've watched this video and Anthony's video where he tried float pods both a few times. Question; do you think that pods mounted forward on the hull and shaped differently would give you the "at speed" problems you experienced with the design you used? I have been brainstorming a side pods design to add some more stability to my 14x32 jon boat. Liking your vids, keep up the good work.

So here's the deal! You need more weight in the front of pocket rocker..... Basically you need more flotation in the front.. that adds weight to keep the front in the water. Keeping the back higher. Added side floats the the front....

Do you think if you had angled side float pods you wouldn't have the issue of water wanting to raise up and over into the boat? The front of the side pods (IMO) need to mimic the nose of the jon boat and help get the pods up and on top of the water instead of cutting into the water. Keep up with the fun tests!
