The Subject Matters host Joe Condon talks with Kevin Nephew -- Member of the Seneca Nation about the topic of Native Americans. Nephew discusses the term Native Americans, stereotypes, historical facts and the Two Row Wampum Treaty. The Two Row Wampum Renewal Campaign, a partnership between the Onondaga Nation and Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON), is developing a broad alliance between the Haudenosaunee and their allies in New York and throughout the world. Our statewide advocacy and educational campaign seeks to achieve justice by polishing the chain of friendship established in the first treaty between the Haudenosaunee and Dutch immigrants. Environmental cleanup and preservation are the core components of our campaign. With a proud and rich history, the Seneca were the largest of six Native American nations which comprised the Iroquois Confederacy or Six Nations, a democratic government that pre-dates the United States Constitution. The Seneca Nation of Indians currently has a total enrolled population of nearly 8,000 citizens. The territories are generally rural, with several residential areas. Many Seneca citizens live off-territory, some are located across the country, as well as in other countries. Also, guest discussed the use of mascot Indian names and the operation of casinos.

Thank you for sharing, this was very informative. I grew up in Buffalo and attended public schools, very little was taught about the local native heritage/history. I look forward to learning more about Seneca nation.

From what I was told we came from the Wolf tribe. I really want to learn more. My grandparents have all kinds of old paintings and books that were handed down to them.

@@g0thica Turtle clan. Everyone called my gma, Turtle/Ka'no:wa, I guess out of ease, because the rest is a mouthful for non-native speakers. But, my grandmother's full name was Horse Woman of the Turtle Clan. So, in Seneca it is: Këötanëhkwih Yakökwe Ka'no:wa. I think its a beautiful name in native tongue.

When Christopher Columbus came upon the “new world / North America” he touched down in what he thought was the Indies or India (but it was actually the Caribbean). From that time on he called the people in the Caribbean Indians even though he was mistaken. The name, Indian, has been misapplied since then to refer to all Native people in North, Central and South America. Hope this helps!

Deer is a bird because he "flies" through the woods (antlers). If you have ever seen deer at full run in the woods, you will know this.

So the mistake that USA made was forcing the draft upon the natives.. that gave natives equal rights as us citizens. Second was allowing the Confederate to establish passports which gave them duo citizenship. Third, the domestic depending acknowledgement shows that the government establish within the natives can be considered as territories just like Puerto Rico and Guam, which are US colonial territories as per the Constitution which means that they can vote for president under Article 12 or run for Congress as well as Senate.

Charlotta Atlas the Senecas are considered a Territory because we never surrendered to the American government. We have always been powerful enough to hold our own, and never submitted to the Americans.

I am proud to be a Micmac, I was taught that we were descendants of the Algonquin. I was always taught by my Grandmother we are not to fight. As you know we are from the East Coast of America but some of the Senecas believe differently 🤨!!!

All of the Haudenosaunee, but especially the Seneca, had a history of adoption from outside their nations. Children as well as adults where added to the tribe and became family members. The Haudenosaunee have always been 'mixed'. Sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, mothers, and fathers might not have been born into the Seneca. When the Europeans came, they could potentially be welcomed into the tribe just as any other people's.
