The Moral Letter to Lucilius are a collection of 124 letters which were written by Seneca the Younger at the end of his life, during his retirement, and written after he had worked for the Emperor Nero for fifteen years. (These Moral Letters are the same letters which Tim Ferriss promotes in the Tao of Seneca)

I have a question about Stoicism. Let's say you have an upcoming wrestling match, what do you do? Do you keep a clear mind and not to let doubt in or do you use negative visualization? Negative visualization prepares you for loss, and let's you handle it better, but doesn't it introduce doubt as well?

Hey Andrey I'd say you should be able to mentally picture loss without losing confidence in yourself, just as you can mentally picture spraining your ankle without becoming more likely to sprain it. Negative visualisation is about preparing yourself mentally so you don’t collapse or freak out in situations, and you don’t need to dwell on these topics for long to be prepared for them, you just need to consider them. Also, I’d say that if you’re practising visualisation as a means to improve performance, then what you should be visualising is the process of fighting itself, not the winning; how you are going to fight and how you are going to counter different moves. That’s what’s valuable and it’s also all that’s in your control. As such taking a moment to visualise how a gracious loser would conduct themselves as well will not interfere with it.
