She should have bought a house when homes were cheaper like back in 1975 homes were affordable back then in L.A. county. Im 70 i bought my first. home after i got out of the Army in. 1971 homes in carson calif were cheap 3 bd rooms going for 30,000 and up.i bought my first home it was a 1 bd room.for 15,000 my morgage pym was 200 .00 a month then i moved out of L A in 1985 i now lived in a home 4 bd 3 bath home i pay 350.a month im buying my home im retired too God bless me ots a nice area too close to the mountains

Why is there no affordable housing in these towns for seniors? You can't miss them where I live - every town should have a Housing Authority for this type of housing.

@Sudhir Kakar There are lots of companies that provide retirement programs for their workers and lots that don't. Millions of people go into retirement with just social security - which is rarely enough to pay market rate rent.

Wow just for a rent??? It does not include food and others?? Well for seniors citizens if you have social security check of 1,250 $ a month they can retire in the philippines. For just 1k $ a month you could have descent living here and save 250 $ a month more. If more than that, much more better.

California, richest state in the country, 5th richest in the world, and yet, despite all of it's "social programs", still let the poor and elderly suffer. Maybe if they stopped catering to the illegal immigrants that help provide cheap labor for the major corporations, might be a good start.

I'm from hawaii; the island of Oahu, and there are already so many people living in storage units that the storage unit owners have paid security guards to keeps people from sleeping in the storage units !!! I live in Virginia now and have been here for 13 months or so and love every minute of it....

Mary Leonard My mom was a narcissist split my race and personality as a child then hid it. but I would let her stay with me but live in a semi homeless shelter in NYC. Sometimes you just need Togo on a show and a bunch of people will help with people they feel a bond with. I do with her but we’re in the same situation

I live nearby. Everything she says is true. On my mother’s street every house has two and even three generations living together. I am thinking of leaving but have no idea in the world where to go. I’ve lived here all my life. This was in 2018 I hope Miss Cheryl is ok. Sending her good wishes.

I’m a senior and retired and my landlord said she was gonna double my rent in Santa Cruz. A week later I used my credit card To moved to Texas. I have no car. “If” u don’t work and live off SS check You can find a cheaper place to live than California. If u spent your whole life working You need to have a plan. Life is not gonna give u anything. Saving and planning is extremely Important.

Visited San Diego five years ago and met up with a friend there. She told me straight up her take on her home state. You either have the really really rich or the really really poor, and that leaves the middle class totally screwed and why most are leaving the state in droves.

All the high population urban republican areas are facing high rent too....it's happening all across the world, search rising rent, everywhere italy, spain, netherlands, nigeria. This is so heartbreaking. A very common thing. I live in LA and my rent is $2200 for a 2 bedroom! Side note: She's 73? My goodness she looks 20 years YOUNGER. She looks amazing and is in better shape than most people younger than her.

@@m.thomas8819 My sister worked her entire life and died just after turning 62. She was a career gal that never married. She worked her way up and lost ALL of it!! She lost her job (company went out) when she was 58 and no one wanted to hire her. Her 401-K and savings had taken huge hits during the recession and only lasted her 2 years or so. She had no health insurance left and got cancer. The ONLY reason she didn't die on the side of the road homeless is because I took care of her! Her daughter didn't care. So, you don't think it couldn't happen to you??????? P.S. That huge upper-middle-class home was sold to pay off her debts. It was all for nothing.

I've lived in L..A. since the age of 5 and I can honestly tell you can literally see the income inequality every single day. Other than the weather I don't know why anyone would want to move out here. In addition to the high rents, there's the high price of gas and even higher taxes. It's a truly sad state of affairs. One that I would never think I would see in my lifetime. Thousands of people are being forced out of their homes and into their cars. There is no middle class in this city. In San Francisco, people who work in the city have been forced out because of high rents and now have to commute into the city which can take up 2-4 hours. Can you imagine that? Being forced out of your apartment and you now have to commute 4 hours to a job that probably would have taken you 30-40 minutes because you can no longer afford to live there. This is the new America.

And now with the opening of the new LA RAMS stadium in Inglewood, the long time residents of that community are fearful of the inevitable gentrification of their which undoubtedly lead to the increase in rent. More and more people are either being forced to flee LA to more affordable nearby cities or moving out of state altogether. There are so many people living in their cars because they can no longer afford their rent. It’s really sad because it’s happening to hard working Americans. People who actually played by the rules.

You're not secure in home ownership, either. All it takes is a property appraisal at a higher rate and you'll pay higher taxes. Surrounding structures can increase your property/ home value, too.

Home ownership means nothing if you don’t own it flat out. A job lost can cause you to fall behind on your mortgage and then you’re out in the streets. A lot of people had houses and lost them due to a vary of problems.

I agree with you Todd! N.Y. does have rent control! It is expensive and New Yorkers love it and never complain! My cousin and her family own a Brown Stone, that was paid off years ago! Renters just have a budget and have good jobs!

The problem with living with relatives are many. Different Generations like lots of company. They like to smoke and drink and they keep up too much noise. Sometimes relatives don't clean up behind themselves. It's just so much simpler and quieter to have your own place.

My parents passed away within 18 months of each other. My brother coerced my father into redoing his will, after my mom passed, while he was grieving and sick with cancer, to give him full control of the assets. I received nothing. That is fine because my brother and sister will get their karma. Point is, they are greedy and wouldn't help me if I was on the road, dying. And I have done nothing wrong. Family can change quickly when money and being humble is involved.

I'm from Chicago and live in the burbs now and it's happening here too. We need rent control across the country. My condo mortgage is cheaper than the rents. They just built an apartment complex down the street where the lowest rent is $2300 all the way to $4800! I feel bad for these people this is so sad

s Same here in England it's against the law to raise rent by more than 50% in fact government actually trying to bring in a law that prevents private landlords from raising their rents by more than 5% _ 10% per year. You cannot evict a tenant for being 5 days late in arrears. Unbelievable that this system exist in America so unfair.

My biggest goal when my husband and I settle on land to build our forever home, is to have enough land build a 2 bedroom back house. We Will need an 6 bedroom home, and the back home will be a 2 bedroom versiob of it. My grandmother will definitely live there. We Will stock her fridge. I try to get her to move in now. DING DING DING we have a winner folks.. rent increase up to nearly $1000 /month or more than doule , it is no wonder people are homeless. it should never have een allowed in the first place. It is a global crisis. Seniors and veterans homeless Just like mental health as there isnt any resources or affordable care..., this leads to self medication with drugs etc...Highest teenage suicde rate ever with kids being left as prey to the sickest people online/offline and left as targets to human traffickers. Yet there isn't any action y governments , oh wait yes these people are arrested if they set up camp anywhere. It is all about the mighty dollar and politicians spend tax dollars on everything BUT the people who paid the taxes.

I’am more concerned about mothers from overseas than Latin Americas. We Californians know rental issues are a welfare issue, and that those issues need to be resolved. It is not the immigrant that worked for a living, it’s the generations of families on section 8, food stamps and free medical. What about the property tax? It adds up real fast, especially on a fixed income. The community has outgrown her, don't wait until you're bankrupt to realize that. Some people find places outside of the US to retire in be style with access to medical, rather than suffer the torments of poverty.

a house may have helped if she could of afforded to buy one 30 years ago. what if she only made mn wage? she would not of been able to then. Plus even if she had, the property taxes would of increased so much it would now be like a house payment on a fixed income. and if she deferred her taxes, it is likely by the time she died the state would take her home as thw amount now duewould of eaten u her value of the house.

Yeah, there are small towns (population of 30,000 or less ) all over this country with cheaper rents than those big cities. Especially in the south. I live in the south in my small 'government " home. That's what we use to call VA houses. It has been paid for a long time. And of course I know a lot of people who live in mobile homes that they own and is on land they own.

You can't do those those types of rent increases here in Canada. In Canada, specifically where I live in Ontario, the landlord can only increase your rent by 4% per year by law. If the landlord wants to increase the rent more than that they have to justify the increase because of expenditures related to property development like adding an in-ground pool, or renovation the waiting area. They can't just raise the rent just because they want more money.

I hardly ever raised the rents. When & if I needed to I raised it $100.00. I thought that was a lot, but I really needed to. I would never have raised someone's rent $500.00 to $600.00 more per month even though I knew I could. That's cruel to do that to people.
