Brave men that we ordinary seafarers rely on. I cannot give them enough praise. Anyone who has tried to retrieve a boat (stern or bow first) onto a slip or beach in even a lowly 4 cross wind will know what a pain it can be. They performed brilliantly and the skipper had a hard job - could not have done better.

Back in the 80s sometime I took a little bike ride (m/cycle) down to Sennen from North Cornwall. It was a nice day and as it was pre-Emmet season and it would be low tide when a got there I took some fishing gear. I really, really enjoyed the ride, not much on the road (not that I ever let anything stay in the way for long) I found the place, the sea was dead flat so no fishing, I didn’t go to such places to sunbathe, so I thought, I’m really, really going to enjoy the ride home.

Damn fine job bringing in such a large boat with seas and winds pushing it every which way as you back it in. I saw a civilian back a boat in with just a light crosswind and he hit the boat on the port side then starboard side then pulled forward and it the boat trying to pass. I think the dog was really someone's mother-in-law shouting instructions; more, less, port, forward, starboard, back, more, forward, less, stop.

The black smoke is the RNLI engineering dept. who with GM diesels got the engines to give full power from the word go.The boats never did this when new but you need alot of power very quick in a lifeboat.As for the Ddecs i will let other people make there own minds up if they think its good for a lifeboat or the engineer with all the problems.

Rough conditions. I can see why they chose the more protected entry railway. And the dog know what's happening too! Sensing the precarious moments.

I always loved the sound that CITY OF LONDON's V8's made when she was giving it fuul whack, shame the V6 just doesn't do it for me, but still nice enough engines.

Interesting process. The second slipway on the right, is that for a different lifeboat or is it a launchway for the Tyne that was just recovered? How do the engines receive cooling water during the launch and recovery process? Keel cooling?
@duane356
@duane356 6 жыл бұрын
Has to be a closed system. You don't want salt water in an expensive aluminum cooling system
@ozzy2426

Greg Stoll they have a oil system that bit like a car it circulates round the engines and keeps them cool though not a lot of people know that lifeboats have a cabin called survivors cabin which is under the bow next to the engine room which it does get quite warm in there and it gets warm in the wheel house too as that's directly above the engine room so the engines still do get pretty warm
@Avilator189
@Avilator189 11 жыл бұрын
I would think that the amount of time the engines are running while out of the water is nowhere near enough to heat them up that much at idle.

Maybe drive the thing straight in and build a turntable or wheelhouse to turn the boat around. That looks dangerous!

Andrew Scott why when these boats go backwards as well as they go forwards go to all that unnecessary trouble for no benefit?

Andrew Scott exactly what I thought. If there was a storm and had to go rescue someone.. how would they get them to shore? Apparently it is an option to drive boat forward onto the ramp. Then turn it around later when storm calms down?
@robinturner2300
@robinturner2300 6 жыл бұрын
H K they would take any rescued personnel to a safe harbour or have them air lifted off by helicopter before putting the boat away.

These brave people really deserve our support, I've been giving ever since i was old enough to earn and i have left a substantial portion of my estate to them, that was until now. I will never support them again. I'm sorry but it's the RNLI not the RILI, National not International. Stop empire building. I expect my donations to support the British not people in Africa and elsewhere, if you have so much money, help those that need it in the UK those that work tirelessly on our behalf, not those abroad. Giving Burkini's to those in Africa makes a mockery of those brave soles that regullarly risk and to those that have given their lives to save those in the UK seas. For example Penlee and others. Its a bloody disgrace

@@hb1338 I'm talking about the millions that the people Donate to the RNLI every year that the RNLI gives away abroad to other countries that make no contribution yet they have deserving brave people right here in the UK but they give them nothing and some find it hard to survive. The RNLI should take care of the hard working people that make them possible. WHAT I'M SAYING I THINK IS IF THE OTHER COUNTRIES DON'T CARE ABOUT THE SAFETY OF THEIR CITIZENS WHY SHOULD WE. THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT, GET IT NOW? I'LL NEVER GIVE THEM ANOTHER PENNY.

@@BB-tm7gx The founder of the RNLI actually envisaged a worldwide service…. The RNLI exists to save lives at sea, any life. The majority of people rescued don’t contribute. What is actually a disgrace, is people like you using the name ‘Penlee’ etc to further your own bigoted agenda. Those men died going to the aid of people they had never met, regardless of where they were from.
@CaveRescueMedic
@CaveRescueMedic 7 ай бұрын
oh dear, you didn’t learn about the founders vision. And the service has never been for British people, it has always been there to help anyone (regardless of nationality) and who is in difficulty within the area of operations. If a foreign registered cargo ship was in difficulty 40 miles off the UK coast, with a foreign crew aboard, would you complain about the RNLI going to help them because none of them are British? A true supporter would understand the concept of helping everyone without judgement. Also, how dare you use the loss of the brave Penlee crew to further your bigotry. You are insulting their memory by doing that. Disgraceful!

@@CaveRescueMedicDon't use your holier than thou tone with me. I gave because i feel for the people off our shores especially those risking everything to save others . I don't feel for those in Burqa's that the RNLI gave millions to to learn to swim. And get rid of that stupid Handle. Or should i use the name UNLifeFlightPilot, No i'm not as pompous and opinionated as others here.
