Thank you for a nice video! What made you choose a shotgun microphone and not a lavalier?

@@andersgwarne8892 Thanks for watching! We usually lav our subjects so we have a backup audio source, but generally find that in controlled interview settings using a shotgun microphone produces a better sound (more depth and richness to the voice).

Lots of reverb. Sound blankets or a pencil condenser mic with a cardioid pattern?

Great video! Very helpful. I am considering the MKE600 since I mostly do solo content. However, I plan to do some 2-person videos from time to time. Do you think this would work well for a 2 (or multi-person) interview boomed overhead? Or would I be better off going with a dedicated mic per person? Thanks!
@MeridianMedia
@MeridianMedia Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and glad it was helpful! The pickup pattern on the MKE600 is very directional, so I think for 2-person interviews you’d want a mic pointed at each person (or if you wanted to simplify a bit you might want to go with two lav mics).

Great video! A question: why don't you plug it in straight into the camera with XLR-3,5mm wire? Does it change the quality?
@houstonhughes184
@houstonhughes184 Жыл бұрын
Any mic is going to sound better through XLR into a recorder. I have a Sony FX3 and did some straight into camera 3.5mm tests with my MKE 600, and the levels and noise floor are nowhere near as good as the audio running into my Zoom H5 via XLR.

Thanks for the video. I'm trying to learn more about sound capture. I'm no expert but I felt the room wasn't ideal sonically - lots of hard surfaces which led to a high reverb echo, possibly exaggerated by a shotgun like the Sen MKE 600? Maybe a sound blanket hung camera LHS (out of shot) would have helped? If using 'Producer sound blankets' (one side black one side white) then it can also help with lighting with a fill on LHS (or, black side out for more face lighting drama). On mikes, possibly a more cardoid type mike (especially in a reverberant room) would be better indoors? At least that's what I commonly see elsewhere on YT videos. Perhaps something like a Sennheiser MKH 50 (or if I were buying now an 8050) but I accept that's a massive cost difference (yet maybe 90% of the 50/8050 benefit could also be had with an Octava MK-0I2). Having said that I recently bought a MKH 416 (on reputation) and it sounds ok boomed indoors, but I'm using in a well treated space. I honestly don't know from experience just what a shotgun (MKE 600 or MKH 416) would be like in a range of indoor environments vs the so called pro choice of a boomed super cardoid (eg Octava MK-012 or pricier Sennheiser MKH 50 or 8050). To what extent is any difference hype, theory or is it validated in real world use? I'd like to hear from anyone with good experience using both types of mike indoors. Outside l'm sure a shotgun wins. I don't mean to be overly critical or 'preachy I'm just trying to learn from what I observe and welcome more informed perspectives discussing this as we can all learn. Agree you probably get better sound recording separately and later syncing in post (bypassing the often low quality camera audio electronics). Zoom F3 is a great compact option, although higher models or SD MixPre recorders are better again with better TC possibilities (but that's overkill and far from essential in a simple one person 'talking head' scene).

Hey, thanks for watching! No worries at all, I very much believe that we can all learn from each other and I think it’s super important to always challenge ourselves to find better ways of doing things. Definitely agree that sound blankets are beneficial for rooms that are too reflective/reverby. We often find ourselves working with a small crew on a tight timeline, so sometimes we just don’t have the capacity to go that far. That being said, if we arrive on set and have the ability to choose a room, we weigh the acoustics pretty heavily in that decision. Dereverb effect in Audtion can sometimes work well too, but I generally think of that as more of a last resort. In terms of pickup patterns I still think a shotgun mic will lend you the best audio in situations where you don’t want to see the mic. Sure, a large diaphragm mic will sound richer but once you move them out of frame they don’t sound as nice to me. Maybe others have different experiences there though. Again thanks for watching and feel free to send us an email anytime you want to brainstorm techniques together.

Can we record MKE 600 Directly on our smartphones like iPhones or something? Without any type s of recorder?
@MeridianMedia
@MeridianMedia Жыл бұрын
This is great question! I think you can, but haven't tested it. You would need to use batteries on the MKE 600 to provide phantom power, and then you would need a XLR Female to lightning (for an Iphone). Let me know if you give this a try, very curious to hear your results!

Is it good for computer-Zoom meetings/school etc or not?
@MeridianMedia
@MeridianMedia 2 жыл бұрын
It would work fine for Zoom meetings, but you would need to run it through an audio interface to connect it to your computer. A cheaper option would be the Yeti USB Microphone. You would still get really good quality but you'd be able to run directly into the computer through USB. Hope this helps!

Provided you don't have multiple speakers in one single physical room. Koz it a shotgun mic doesn't take much good sound off-axis... It should be directed towards one speaker

I do believe that plosives cover is an unnecessary thing in this case. Please, correct me, if I wrong. However, the video is superb❤
@MeridianMedia
@MeridianMedia 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! We use a plosives cover if we are picking up on a lot of sibilance in the voice. Usually this is caused by room acoustics or by the person's voice characteristics. So there isn't really a set rule for when you should use it, but it's always good to have it in case you need it. Hope this helps!

Why did you place your light to the left of the subject when natural light was coming in from the banks of windows? Wouldn't it have been better to place it on the opposite side and balance out the light and shadows?

@@artdoneus They haven't succeeded in sculpting light and avoiding a flat look. They managed to light it very blandly with a hot spot on the person's left side. They have adequately made use of the natural light and allowed it to distract from the subject. Their placement of the subject, treatment of the windows and use of fill lighting was quite bad. Yet it's a video to provide an example of how others can do it "professionally" What crap!
