Today we’re unboxing the Sennheisser MKE 600. We will also run a series of tests against other microphones for the field and the studio. The other mics we are comparing against are the Sennheiser MKH 416, Rode NTG2, Sony UWP, and Shure SM27

Today we’re unboxing the Sennheisser MKE 600.
I’m looking for a diverse mic that can be used both in the studio and in the field.
First, we’ll unbox and then do a series of tests using this mic against a show down of voice microphones both in the studio and outside to see how it would perform in noisy environments.
In the box, of course we have the mic itself, this comes with an and off switch as well as a low cut filter switch.
Then we have a windscreen to give us a cleaner sound outdoors.
A hotshoe mount, which I will not be using, I will be using a shotgun holder.
And finally an XLR to 3/4 inch jack, again I won’t be using this as I use XLR to XLR only.
The mic itself is quite beautiful, let’s take a moment to appreciate its design.
I will be testing the MKE 600 both in the studio and in the field against a range of microphones.
The top contenders will be: The Sony UWP cavalier mic, The SM 27, The Rode NTG2, The sennheisser 416.

Great video, Danny! I just purchased the MKE 600 for client work and enjoyed listening to your field tests. I also agree with your statement on lapel mics - everyone does always tap their chest! Great reviews. Hope you get more views! A lot of work went into to this and it was great with the switching in real environments. I already got the 600 but haven’t used it yet. Hope you get to 100k views!!

Thanks for your review Danny. I just ordered an MKE-600 and am anxiously waiting to try it out. I've also heard great things about the MKH50, but can't justify paying USD 1200 for it.

I liked the sound of the MKE 600 I am planning on buying one and now ive heard it I think if you weak the eq slightly you would get the sound of the 416 if you wanted to for less but to be honest MKE 600 all day long . Great video Danny.

Hi Danny, great video testing out the mics in different field environments ! Most mic reviews just don't cover the specific situations that we put these microphones through in our line of work haha. I do want to ask what you thought of the rode ntg 5 ? I'm also based in South East Asia, so I figured the ntg 5 would work better for me as it it is advertised to do better in humid environments and it also come with the basic accessories to get you started. The price difference between the NTG 5 and the mke 600 for me is only 90 usd where I am based, so it really does seem like you get more bang for you buck, but I am curious what you would think about it.

Completely agree that’s why I did this test because I hadn’t seen any that tested it in these field environments that are so common for our work! Regarding the NTG 5, I’ve heard it’s good and wish I knew someone I could have borrowed from for this test. I’m hoping to do a further test one if I can get my hand on a ton of shotgun mics. If you’re able to, please let’s connect! Let me know how you like the NTG5 should I go with that one. Cheers!

Wow! Based on your tests in the video, I actual liked the sound of the MKE600 better on your voice. Much fuller sounding. The 416 sounded thin to me. A little more off axis rejection with the 416 but the very small amount of ambient sound the got through the 600 didn’t bother me. I almost preferred it. Sounded more natural. Looks like I’m buying the 600 👍. Thanks for the great vid. It helped a lot.

Honestly, I found myself surprised to feel the same. Although the 416 would probably be better in a super loud protest or concert where speakers are blasting to cut out the off axis like you mentioned

Can you plug in the Sennheiser MKE 600 XLR to TRS (1/8" or 3.5mm jack) cable directly into a PC or laptop for recording and streaming?

I don’t know what pc or laptop you have. But most don’t have an audio input jack light that. Most are just headphone out. But… you could get a standard field recorder, like a tascam or marantz. If you want to record direct to your computer, you’ll need an audio interface to accept the signal. Check out the Rode AI micro USB-audio interface or the audio technica consumer 3.5mm to usb interface. If you get either of these options or another. Please post back, I’d like to know how it works out for you.

Value for money is the mke600 and I am very pleased with Sony Uwp……the very best I had 2 x sennheisers. mhk 60 ……and sold them to pay for other things …..
