I am blind, so I really rely on my hearing and I feel like I can pick up things better than most people. I own these headphones and I just think that their sound as far as the separation of instruments versus vocals and bass to me is even and consistent. There isn’t too much bass or the vocals don’t seem flat I don’t know if I’m using the right words but I really do like these headphones. One thing I also like is you don’t get that extra pressure in your ears with the a NC turned on. And there’s no change in the instrument and vocals with it being on or off.

this review was spot on while describing the sound signature and technical performance, one feature this headphone has that is often overlook is that it has 5 different usage modes 1) Bluetooth 2) USB (btw, some people don't go and download the manual so never discover that they can leave the bluetooth turned off by holding the assistant button before unfolding the phones) 3) analogue-active (3.5mm with headphones turned on) 4) analogue-passive (3.5 mm with headphones turned off) (you can leave the headphones turned off by holding the play button before unfolding) 5) just for the ANC without any playback (use the method on point 2 and the ANC will still work without being connected to any device saving on battery life by not having the device constantly search for a Bluetooth connection) the best audio is obtained through USB, since while on analogue-active mode the analogue signal is first turned to digital (so it gets affected by the DSP, such as the EQ and ANC) adding an extra step and thus resulting in slight degradation (most people still won't notice a difference). something I discovered while listening at the analogue-passive mode is that the regular sound signature (while on bluetooth, USB and analogue-active mode) is achieved through DSP, while the headphones are turned off and powered by analogue they sound considerably Neutral and flat, they also get a bit better imaging and resolution. I am sure most people won't like the sound when on Analogue passive and the purist will cringe at the idea of the device having a default DSP but for enthusiasts (not exactly the main target audience for these) I see it as a positive, since you are basically getting two different sounding headphones in one. one thing to take into consideration however is that this headphones have somewhat low efficiency, so to properly get the full resolution from the drivers while on passive an Amp might be needed (this is probably the reason for the comparatively lower battery life, since the driver is more power hungry)

@marcin7928
@marcin7928 3 жыл бұрын
Great comment. One question. While I connect my headphones through USB or 3.5mm I get 50Hz mains hum while ANC is turned on. Probably this is due to electrical interference from non-fitlered power supply. But shouldn't the headphones filter out that kind of noise? Do you get this in your headphones?
@MiloTheFirst1
@MiloTheFirst1 3 жыл бұрын
@@marcin7928 yeah, with ANC on I too get this hum when I plug them to my laptop and the power brick is plugged, while the laptop is unplugged from its power supply it doesn't happen, likewise it doesn't happen when I plug them to my phone. my guess is that this is a ground loop hum that happens because the frequency from the computer's transformer is different from the one inside the phone which transform the DC from its own battery into the AC it uses to amplify the audio signal and power the inbuilt microphones it uses for the ANC. I am not an electronics engineer so I don't really know how much more expensive or difficult it would have been to filter this, but the fact that it only happens while the ANC is on makes me think that it must be associated to the change in impedance in the system when those microphones start getting powered by the headphone's internal battery.
@marcin7928
@marcin7928 3 жыл бұрын
@@MiloTheFirst1 Thanks for the response. I have just received a message from their support that pro-audio such as these headphones need to be used with devices that are connected to a surge protector with a filter (that's how its called i guess in English). I had similar problem with my guitar but that was because there were two devices powered with different power suplies and one of them needed to be filtered. Here with a battery powered device it's weird. To me it seems like hardware design bug. Sony 3M seems to not have this kind of problem. If this is because adding a filter would cause a sound quality drop I would accept it. But nowhere in the manual it says that this kind of issue might occur.
@MiloTheFirst1
@MiloTheFirst1 3 жыл бұрын
@@marcin7928 regarding the "with a battery powered device it's weird", that's because internally they indeed have a power supply, the headphone's drivers and microphones need to ultimately be powered with AC, so the energy from it's battery needs to be transformed at some point, and well, power supplies are just glorified transformers. since the hum doesn't happen when the ANC is off, I speculate that the drivers and the mics are powered by a separate set of transformers, then when we flip the ANC switch what we are doing is powering on the mics' transformers. they must be using some filter in the system for the driver's chain, otherwise we would also hear the hum when the ANC is off. to be fair the hum is generated by the computer's power supply not the headphones, but on the other hand not every one who buys these headphone is expected to have a high end motherboard that filter these things either. my guess is that they just weighted the pros and cons and concluded most of the users were not going to use the ANC while sitting in front of a desktop, and of those few most were going to connect the headphones to the computer through Bluetooth anyways. and thus it wouldn't be much of an issue. just as you, if I don't need to move around I also prefer to connect my phones to the PC through USB to have the highest fidelity audio possible but yeah, it was kind of a bummer when I realized that hum was there, but tbh, for when I want high fidelity I wouldn't use the ANC anyways since by design ANC is going to modify the audio signal (with the wave that is supposed to counter the ambience noise), I am not trying to defend Sennheiser here, and as I previously mentioned I don't really know how much of a technical challenge countering this would have been. but hey, it is what it is, personally it doesn't bother me that much (since I don't use the ANC while using my desktop, mostly just when commuting) but I can understand if do to others

The battery life on these is actually considerably longer than what’s noted here. While there still is nothing near a flawless ANC/wireless high quality headphone, this one is really good. The one big flaw IMO is the adjustment on the headband. The round sliders on each side stop holding their position after some time. I really enjoy these and still use them daily. However, they really should have designed the round sliders to be turned and tightened. The sound is way above average for a consumer grade product. Nice overview here though

Great review. These have been around for a while now and it was good to get your take. I had the Momentum 2 and I thought wireless ANC headphones could not get better given the technology in them. However, listening to the Momentum 3 and now own a pair I can see the difference and improvement. I agree with your one demerit which is in dynamics but as you say the bass boost does make up for some of that ... also, given that they are an intimate headphone with not the widest soundstage the need to more attack in the highs is somewhat mitigated so you don't feel like the highs are far away. I genuinely have never heard an ANC headphone with better overall sound and that is saying a lot. Thanks for your review, you pulled out some qualities I will listen for but most of all as with most people who have made a purchase - you made me feel very good about the one I have made haha. I have the bose qc 35 ii and prefer them over the sennheiser pxc 550 ii for movies because they have better 3d imaging and instrument separation and punchier base and drums. But I prefer the 550ii for music for the better clarity and wider soundstage. How does the momentum 3's compare in these categories? Specifically does it have good 3d imaging for movies? Or should I just stick with Bose for that.

Nevermind finished watching and it sounds like the momentum 3 might not be the way to go for movies. I hear the Bose NC 700 has a much wider soundstage then the 35 ii. But I also heard the bass and drums are less punchy and sharp hitting and I wonder if it also lacks the 3d imaging the 35 ii has.

1:40 I've had mine for at least a year and a half if not 2 years now and they still work well for how much I blast music on them to try to cancel out my parent's fighting. One thing I noticed with them is that if you go above 2/3 volume people will sometimes be able to hear what you're listening to but that's fine with me because I usually don't put the volume that high. The only thing I've noticed is that the area where the headphones change height has started to wear slightly and doesn't stick as well as it used to. very durable though drop them a few times and nothing broke. The one bad thing about them is that my friends say that over discord it sounds like a carrot. (very sharp and spikes often...) over normal calling it's ok

This is probably a tough one, a very good question, Momentum 3 should be compared to Shure Aonic & Bowers and Wilkins PX7, not with Sony XM3 and XM4 unless you prioritize noise cancelling as the number 1 feature (which some people do). I believe all three are good but I am guessing Shure Aonic & Bowers and Wilkins PX7 may be slightly better, sound is very subjective though and you would have to listen to all three of them.

I haven't tried the Shure nor the Sennheiser so I can't compare, but I owned the PX7 and while I thought they had good soundstage and dynamics, their weird tuning completely ruined them for me. Highs sound definitely recessed and there's an exaggerated peak at 10k that gets annoying after a while. Although you can't judge headphones based on just their mesurements, these seem consistent to what I heard in the B&W and to what Chrono said about the Sennheiser: www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/bowers-wilkins/px7-wireless www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/shure/aonic-50-wireless www.rtings.com/headphones/reviews/sennheiser/momentum-3-wireless

I upgraded to these from the Sony XM3. The difference in sound quality and soundstage is not even remotely close between the two with the M3's being the obvious winner. The XM3's sound muddy and muted by comparison with a much more centered/narrow stage. The ANC on the M3 is not overpowering, and the absolute biggest positive difference between the two is the build quality. The XM3 started creaking after a few weeks of use (I had returned it for a new pair that did the exact same thing) and the headband broke after a few months just from using them at a desk. 6 months into my M3 ownership and they still feel brand new with no audible creaks or clicks. 10/10

excessive bass is only there while the noise canceling is turned on. it adds so much extra bass while on that if you listen to something bass-heavy at a loud level while noise canceling is off, it will actually start to distort if you suddenly switch on the noise canceling to "max". (only at excessively loud levels though) I use these daily, but I stopped using the noise-canceling just to bring the bass down, and only switch it on when I actually have an annoying noise that needs canceling. For each level of noise-canceling, the bass gets more. on the "Wind" setting is almost normal. but on "Max" it's totally overblown. My other issue is the auto-pause music when lifting an earcup. At first, it works fine, but after a few hours, it starts picking up phantom lift offs, while you just maybe turn your head or something. This is very annoying. You can re-calibrate the sensors, and then it works fine again, but then after a few hours the problem starts appearing again. Sound-wise, I think they have way better dynamics and punch than other BT headphones. I also have the Sennheiser BT4.50 and although they are not in the same price bracket, the dynamics aren't even comparable. Also, the Bluetooth microphones for phone calls is really bad, people always complain when I use these for phone calls unless you are in a perfectly quiet room. and even then your voice still sounds clipped. I still love them for what they do and would buy them again.
