Sensational Sherri Martel and Zeus ("Tiny" Lister) appear on the Arsenio Hall show in 1989 to declare war on Hulkamania. Reposting this, slightly edited, due to a previous copyright claim by WWE.

Especially since he was always cool with letting them talk in kayfabe. Arsenio was a great mark for the sport. Mean that in a positive way. His show helped sell those house shows at the Sports Arena just as much as SuperStars of Wrestling or Wrestling Challenge did.

Got to meet her as a kid when she wrestled. She was standing in the back before her match and bunch of us kids spotted her and she never broke character. She gave us a bunch of mean looks and wouldn't talk to us basically ignoring us. We stayed in that back area after the match and she came back thru there and smiled at us then winked and asked us were we having fun, then told us to come back after it was over and she would take a few pictures with us and sure enough she kept her word and took a few pics before she left!

Why are the old greats so much better than the new ones
@kmaru804 жыл бұрын
Because when you look back, you can hand-pick only the best ones to focus on. There were a LOT of duds back then as well. The real question is where are the few greats that should be showing up these days. Rock and Austin had it. You could make an argument for Cena too even though I'm not a fan. Taker of course but he was born of that old era. So who will the fans be looking back at from the current era and saying "boy things were great back then. I wish we had guys/gals like....". I can't think of any names to put in that blank.

I recall watching a shoot interview with Sherri from the early 2000s (slightly before she passed away). She presented as one of the most kind, generous, and classy performers I've had the pleasure of watching. She put nearly everyone over and told some truly great stories. After literally being at the top of the industry for several decades, listening to how she ended up ODing at her Mom's house just brings me to tears...for me, it adds an additional level of tragedy when so many of wrestlers who've passed well before their time end up dying within miles of where they grew up.

@@NemeanLion- I started watching in 1983 at 8 years old, within a year I knew it wasn't "legitimate". Half of the fun was watching for when they called moves, bladed, etc. But we played along! The bulk of the people in the crowd knew what was going on. By my teens I heard about Meltzer's Observer and subscribed to it and all I really "learned" was the inside jargon like kayfabe, etc. McMahon admitted to the NJ Athletic Commission that wrestling was a work but on TV they still played it full on kayfabe. By the Attitude era WWF started openly acknowledging stuff with innuendo & the RAW Magazine but slowly they started to drop any pretense outside of the actual shows on TV. Nowadays they barely even try on the shows. The shit since the pandemic has been awful with silly comedy and parody of the business. You CAN keep kayfabe on a program and outside of the ring again. Of course everyone will still now it's a work but the same was true in the 80s & 90s. Treat the business seriously and the fans will too...

This was great to watch. Nothing beats old school WWF and Arsenio. Thanks for posting!

She was my first wrestling crush. So beautiful, strong and a wild one.

Sherri was ride or die. Like legit - a women's wrester's wrestler. Best performer - so much range - maybe the most, actually talented female performer ever. Not even joking.

Yes! I've been waiting for someone to upload this to KZfaq for years. I use to have it on VHS myself but lost it through the years. Somebody told me that they went to a commercial break at the end there and when they came back Zeus was tearing up the drums but I never saw that myself. "I have a PHD in Hurtin' People" - LMAO!!!

LOL Arsenio was being a smart mark way before the term was in regular use. "Mr. Zeus, you're a big man. But, do you have the wrestling skills...?"

R.I.P Zeus. I remember watching this episode as a kid with my parents. I was legit scared for Arsenio Hall.

Queen Sherri could single handedly carry a show/match/interview. Not one women has even come close to equaling her entertainment.

When she climbed up the gate in the promo vid and crawled around the back she won the title for me 😂

1:57 Arsenio: "And you're no longer wrestling?" Sherri: "Uhh....when I get the chance!" 11:22 Arsenio: "Do you have the wresting skills to handle a Hulk Hogan?"

Zeus scared the crap out of me when I was 7. He had the look. Too bad that was all he had.

The guy would sell tickets. I would've locked him up in a wrestling academy for two years before making a moving putting him out there as a wrestler. Even with experience you don't see much big guys wrestle well.
