A little piece of advice. When loading ammunition into these steel U.S. Military ammo cans, don’t go bigger than the .50 caliber cans. Years ago, I bought 2 .50 caliber cans full of Norinco 7.62 X 39 mm ammunition. It was difficult to get them just a few hundred feet to my vehicle because they were so heavy. The bigger cans should be used for medical supplies or food or other lighter items. But definitely not for ammunition. Anything much larger than the .50 caliber cans will require 2 people to carry them.

The ammo cans for 120mm artillery shells are the perfect size for making a hard case for an ar15 pistol. Get a can of glue and a cheap yoga mat to pad the inside.

We’lol see in the news... Entire company goes into active shooter lock down. Skittles finds himself the only one in the lunchroom, much like Jim Brewer at sears. A little tracked robot will record the confused look on his face right before he is shot by swat. The media and liberals will rejoice having yet another reason to ban any scary looking thing like a gun. ( but oddly nobody is concerned about dodge chargers) Pack something really good for your last meal, Skittles. 😋

I think the "rod holders" on the sides of the can are in place as stiffeners to make sides of the can more ridged so the sides don't buckle from the weight of being stacked so when fully loaded with ammo the bottom can isn't crushed when at the bottom of a stack of cans 5 or 10 cans high ....... and don't have anything to do with carrying options

You missed the Fat Fifty /SAW (Squad Automatic Weapon)... And the REALLY awesome big brothers , the 20mm and 30mm! Those are my two faves. Guys, all your tools can go in these. If you have a pneumatic nailer.... It goes in, with oil, all the various nails you need and a AirCel hose. You can make boxes out of 3/8 ply to fit and stack for smaller goods. I am in love with ammo cans.

Surplus cans are excellent for so much more than most folks realize. I use more of the larger cans than the smaller .30s and .50s. I use the PA 156 81 mm Mortar Cans for Cache boxes. You can store an AR 15 (in 2 pieces, 16 magazines ready to go. I sandblast the used boxes after checking the O-Ring, and the 3 coats inside and out of Epoxy Enamel. One box, has been in the ground now for 15 years. It still is completely intact, no rust and no moisture. I use the 20mm, 40mm, and 60mm Mortar Size Cans to. One 60 mm can has been converted for a complete Comms Base Station including 2 12 VDC Deep Cell Computer Batteries so I can run it without AC power through an inverter for 48 hours on the batteries alone. The ladder antenna is kept in a tall .50 can PA 19.

I made a little wood stove from one of my older, busted ammo cans. Removed the rubber gasket & got creative w/ fire resistant glue. Old thick rain gutter for pipe. It's fun on the back porch. Used it once when backpacking. Put it in the vestibule of my two man tent, worked out well. Downside is u have to feed it wood about ev hour... Works if u need heat though!

These ammo cans are great. Very useful. Just beware of "anything", "Military Surplus" from MidWayUSA. My experience is not good on several items. Bought some surplus 7.62x51 ammo and had to use a hammer and screwdriver to get the can open. Ammo was fine, but the can was trashed.

If you care about your ammo use the best cans but the cheap plastic ones are useful for other things. I personally have several of the cheap plastic, narrow ones (from Harbor Freight) full of heirloom seed packets as my seed bank. They do have a rubber gasket in the top to seal it well. All of the 'cans' are labeled so I know where to find which seeds. (Yes, I know this is about ammo but I often think outside the box and color outside the lines.)

Excellent video as always Don! My first obsession (besides firearms) has to be bags & packs. The second is easily ammo cans and hardened containers. They compliment each other so well. In fact, I even have a dedicated storage crate for multiple ammo cans and various containers. It takes two decently strong individuals or at least four petite women to _easily_ carry it. But I find that compartmentalizing is just as important and addictive as the rest of it. What's more fun that opening a milsurp storage crate full of pelican boxes that have even more goodies inside each of them!? Or finding an old missile crate full of ammo spam cans that was buried under some boxes and rubble, most likely stored away and forgotten until needed. Now _that_ was an immovable item and it's probably why it remained there until I discovered it last year while helping my Father clean his shop. My Dad doesn't recall anything about that missile crate other than the fact that he used it as an extra locker when he served on a carrier in the Navy. He does remember that it used to house his medals, coins and precious metals until he bought another safe. He's very sharp when it comes to the 2A inventory but can't recall purchasing the spam cans. Nonetheless, it was a pleasant surprise for both of us indeed! Keep up the great work my friend. EDITED for double spacing.

i have boiled water in them (for shaving, not drinking), and have even seen them used as a crapper when we were in a long ambush position to avoid smells. (not a fan of that use). ammo cans are great. be aware there are "fakes" out there, i.e. not u.s. surplus. (china knockoffs) walmart and academy sell them as well as others. that being said, those seem pretty good too.

I remember this guy selling these on the road just north of Baton Rouge on the way to Natchez. Would pick up a few of all different sizes. The only limitation besides the weight is that they are not effective as EMP proof containers unless you sand the edges around the lid and rim , seal with aluminum tape etc. But I will never buy another tupperware, sterilite, or rubbermaid plastic container again. The plastic deteriorates, cracks, not uv resistant etc. Buy ammo cans once, cry once. Wal Mart sells some Chinese made 50 cal cans which are “ok”, judged a little thinner than the mil surplus.
