But the reality has TWO faces. One is having the necessary resources if SHTF. The other is INVESTMENT. The local supermarket recently dropped the price of rice by about 45%, and I immediately grabbed 150 kg on the basis that (1) if the SHTF I'll not only have enough to eat for however long it takes but also have plenty to barter, and (2) if nothing untoward happens, and if INFLATION remains at its current rate, in 6/7 years I'll be able to sell it up to 20% cheaper than the supermarkets and STILL make almost 300% profit, REGARDLESS of what the markets/economies/currencies/ etc. do. (And note that the only reason I didn't buy MUCH more is lack of immediate secure/suitable storage-space.) A LESSON: This is a MUCH better 'investment' than gold etc., since gold/bitcoins/etcetc. have NO USE, hence NO VALUE (as distinct from meaningless 'price'). Nobody NEEDS it. (perhaps because you can neither eat it nor even wipe your arse with it.) NOTE: the 'price of gold is measured in $ or other currencies; and in SHTF the very first thing that wil crash (already begun!) is the global currencies. Take care.

EXCELLENT POINTS. In fact, this is by far the best 15 minutes on survival I've ever seen. As a former combat aviator, I've been through two survival schools, along with having done all-weather camping for 40 years in often minimalist fashion. One key point: Plan with your neighbors. Get rid of the inevitable social inertia long before the SHTF. Identify critical skill sets and critical community supplies, and plan some preliminary schedules ahead of time. Make them sensible. You do not want everyone sleep-deprived come daybreak! If your neighbors look at you funny, then laugh with them, but don't count them out, for if the SHTF, they'll either readjust their thinking in a hurry or they wont last long.

Lone wolf by nature here. That 10% extra for helping others is really helpful advice. I grew up with grandparents and parents who always had home canned foods in the cellar but I have wondered recently just how much to really have on hand. Keeping others in mind to keep the community strong is very good. We can't do it all alone (although it sure seems that way most of the time!)

Thank you! One I missed but will try. We have dogs, and they go crazy if a squirrel goes by outside. They are a deterrent, and everyone knows we have them. We had 3 large ones: an E. German Shepherd (120 pounds) and an Alaunt (UK mastiff @88 pounds), and a FL Cur (65 pounds). They all died, but I don't think too many people know that. We have medium dogs now, but one very mean Beagle mix. Even our vet watches out for him!

@@ajcarr1965 You reminded me: we used to have friends who had several little yappy dogs whom she put in the bedroom when company came..They would bark behind the door. She'd yell, "Do you want the cans?" Silence. I said, "What are the cans?" She showed me: she had about 6 tin cans with both ends opened on a piece of rope, ends tied together. She said when they wouldn't stop barking, she would throw the cans at the door, making a racket. They didn't like that, so they'd stop barking. I thought that was so funny! At our house, if our (good sized) Beagle picks on the other dogs, it's, "Do you wanna get sprayed?" Silence. We have a little $Tree spray bottle filled with plain water. If he won't stop growling at them, he gets a spritz in the kisser. Harmless, but now he stops if we just say "spray." Our vet thinks I am a genius!

I’m so fed up with all the heavy handed fear mongering I received from 2020 “prepper channels” regarding apocalyptic situations, and even understanding the need for it and preparing for it, the doomsday scenarios were “hard hitting stormtroopers at your door at 4am tomorrow!” Now, even though the risk is solidly there from ‘46 being elected, I’ve relaxed and taken a deep breath. I’m still doing the same precautions, but I’m very focused on specific things to have in my place, and not constantly raising my stress level up and down. I love your channel because you approach this realistically with a calm attitude and down to earth advice. You don’t have to have a lot of money to start planning for any disaster event, but you do have to make a list and stay calm. Starting somewhere is better than freezing up with an, “OMG I’m going to die” attitude. My lists have crossed over to as many other areas as possible. For example, my emergency radio covers light, noaa, weather and situational needs; my camp stove covers heating an area, 🍳 cooking, coffee, heating water for drinking uses; my tent covers outdoor and indoor needs if the electric is off during winter and how to cope inside your house/apartment...and so on. If you have a family, you need to stockpile various macaroni shaped noodles, rice, canned meat and vegetables 🌽, dehydrated and freeze dried foods, etc. Make sure your kids know to leave the supplies alone and not touch them. I would start decreasing your lunch meals from 1/day to zero altogether to get used to surviving on two meals, breakfast and dinner, every day. Cut down or out on sweets and substitute whole meals such as lentils, dried beans, pulses, grains, with noodles, rice or fresh potatoes and veggies until you have to go to your stock, but learn how to portion out a cooked meal to calm the hunger, making you full, and not overeating anything. Survival means doing on less, not stuffing yourself with your entire meal prep for the week.

This is absolutely no joke. I went through boot camp in the 70's, with a platoon of mostly urban females--four of us total came from farm or rural backgrounds. The whole "sleeping in a foxhole" thing was a picnic for us--listening to 100 other females b*tch and moan was a hoot--but annoying. We knew how to handle firearms (still had learn select-fire) but being on the range with complete noobs was scary. Eight weeks of basic preparation still didn't prepare most of them for the reality of actually having to live that.

I have seen riots that would make ferguson a day in the park, to this, been shoot at, had a gun pointed at my head an threaten to with knifes more times than i can count. having a comunity and a group that you can rely on is the best thing that could ever to you. you can not si inside your house whit your canned food for 5 or 10 years until it all gets better.

If you’ve ever had a toothache you know that it’s so severely distracting that it will shorten your patience and cloud your judgement. It can lead to fatal mistakes in a survival situation. Bugging out is a joke for most of us. If you are in good physical condition and young and you have a place to go, OK. But if you are older, have no where else to go and may not be able to physically handle a long trek, it's best to just stay put and prepare your home.

Agreed. I do have a bug out bag but I keep it in the car in case of emergencies (ie, getting caught up in civil disorder and having to abandon my vehicle a long way from home). I live in the UK and there's no where to run to anyway.

Here are my "don'ts": 1) Don't make decisions based on rumor. Get the early facts from multiple reliable sources. 2) Don't refuse to see approaching danger. Just because a community emergency has not happened to you in your community before, does not mean it cannot happen now. 3) Don't get stuck in long lines waiting to fuel your vehicle. Your vehicle's fuel gauge should never be allowed to get below the half-way point. 4) Don't wait too long to evacuate if the situation warrants evacuation. Leave very early -- you can always return if that hurricane turns away from the predicted path. 5) Don't panic-buy stuff you do not need. Stay away from crowded stores swamped with panicked shoppers -- you could get trampled/robbed/car-jacked. 6) Don't get caught without enough charged batteries and a solar charging panel or other off-grid charging device for all your communication devices, portable lights, etc. 7) Don't fail to use your stove, public water supply and the power grid while you can. Use those last hours of public utilities to cook food that does not need refrigeration (popcorn, cakes, cookies, quick bread...). Fill up every empty container with tap water for drinking, cooking, washing... Recharge all your devices. Do a load of laundry, vacuum the carpeting, run the dishwasher. Freeze extra containers of water so you have blocks of ice to help keep the refrigerator or cooler chilled longer. 8) Don't assume you will be able to pay for things with a credit card, ATM card, gift card or shop on the internet. If the local power grid goes down and stays down for days, you will need cash in hand to buy anything assuming you can find an open store. Merchants will not accept personal checks when they cannot verify those checks electronically. 9) Don't go out sight-seeing post-disaster. Stay indoors and avoid injury. 10) Don't assume that if you need help that emergency services will get to you right away. Get CPR and first aid training. Get CERT training. Be prepared to rescue your neighbors from an earthquake damaged building, to set up a first aide station and render first aid, to set up a camp kitchen to help feed friends, family and neighbors and to provide temporary shelter for the same. 11) Don't ignore the importance of basic hygiene if you are stuck in a disaster area. Have a homemade composting toilet or a shovel for digging a latrine trench. Have plenty of soap and clean water to at least wash face, hands and feet regularly. Have plenty of trash bags or a burn barrel to contain/burn smelly garbage and not provide food for flies, rodents and other vermin. 12) Don't rely solely upon an electronic navigation device if you must evacuate. Nothing beats having a good maps for your evacuation route and a reliable hand-held compass. 13) Don't underestimate how bored you will become if stuck for weeks in a location with no power for your electronic entertainment devices. This goes double if you have children or teens in your household. Have real books, board games, decks of cards, art supplies, non-electronic exercise equipment and assorted non-electronic hobby supplies. Have lesson plans and school supplies if local schools are closed. 14) Don't underestimate the stress of being stuck in a disaster zone and the impact this will have on your sleep and peace of mind. Music, prayer, meditation, chamomile tea, Sleepy Time tea, melatonin, etc. are all potentially useful if you are too anxious/worried/irritable to get a good night's sleep. 15) Don't get caught without a 90-day supply of your prescription medications. Keep a supply of over-the-counter alternatives and herbal remedies if you absolutely cannot persuade your MD to write a prescription for a "vacation" amount of meds. If you use insulin, find a grid-down away to keep your supply chilled.

Being through a few hurricanes and now 3 floods in Southeast Texas, these are some great tips. The gas, the containers of water, etc.. We fill our bathtubs with water also, and use the shower while possible... the bathtub water can be used to flush toilets, wash hands, pet's water. Etc.. and the boredom with kids, you're not lying... Always have something to keep people of all ages entertained.... Cards, books, puzzles, board games, dry erase board/pens/paper for drawing, anything that will keep them busy for long periods of time and keep their minds off the stress... My biggest thing, is always remember you're a team, with whoever you're evacuated or locked down with.. People get stressed and take it out on each other, resentment builds, and then things can get out of control. And that makes things miserable when you are all stuck together for days/weeks/who knows how long. So let things slide that you may normally get annoyed with, remember the little normal pet peeves need to go out the window. You HAVE to stick together, make your people feel that they're welcome and not a burden, and just love and respect unconditionally. You can't get through crazy timss being shut off from the ones closest to you. And pray!

It was distracting from the tasks at hand. I shut off the media, went to the store to buy what flour, sugar, rice etc that I could find. Then I focused on dry canning all of it and getting our food preps in order. Those anxious feelings manufactured by the media can leave you paralyzed. Great information and advice, Sootch! My wife and I retired several years ago and we found this lock down no different than any other time we've been living in our neighborhood. Being retired military and borne of parents who were "preppers", Dad served 31 years in the Army then Air Force and Mom was a Filipina freedom fighter, I was always taught to be prepared. Dad taught me to have "contingency plans" A, B and C. During this time I actually got to know several neighbors when before we pretty much stayed in our respective homes without contact. Practicing social distancing I would stand in my yard and speak to them as they passed by either walking or driving by. We are very fortunate to live in this community where crime is non-existent and it's a beautiful wooded suburb. I love to hike and camp. The woods behind my house afford me to build a Hobo Camp where I can test new gear (except weapons obviously). However, I do practice with my sling shot with several targets set up on the ground and in the trees. I can hike around the neighborhood if I get antsy. Even with all of this I still maintain an awareness of my surroundings and keep a vigilant eye on strange vehicles but they're mostly Amazon and other delivery conveyances. Our Jeep always has a full tank of gas, start it everyday checking tires and fluid levels, packed with emergency gear and two bug out bags. There's room for both of us to sleep in it if necessary. Once a week I go to Walmart or Food Lion to refresh our supply of fresh fruit and vegetables; occasionally some meat to barbecue. As far as contributing to those in need I've given money and food to those who lost jobs and down on their luck. You're providing a great community service, Sootch...keep up the great work!

Be very careful who you tell about your preps, also, don't keep all your preps in one area of your home. Find illogical places to store things. Hide food and water storages. Be sure to place some in the logical place (the kitchen) but also hide it in other areas of your home. If someone does enter your home they'll think all you have is what is in the kitchen; they certainly won't look for it inside box of diapers, or at the bottom of a pile of laundry!
