I practised Goju Ryu under Sean Reich but gradings were done by Gary. During my brown belt grading, he took me out to demonstrate shuto Uke. During the demonstration, he kept encouraging me to hit him harder. By the time we were finished, I was hitting him in the neck as hard as I could. I had hit him 30 times. Hi simply patted me on the shoulder and said "!00% for effort digger " Not only was he the real deal he was also a gentleman.

Never forget a man like Gary Spiers, I have heard first hand accounts about him. There is a lot of talk about so called hard men and tough guys this man was as real as it could be! And it is obvious from this clip he knew how to brawl and he knew how to apply Karate. A true legend RESPECTS.

Gary Spiers, Steve Morris both trained in Goju Ryu in Japan, they are the only two that cut out the waste in my karate systems. Make no mistake this man was as tough as you will find. Thank you for sharing.

I worked for and with him in Chester for 2yrs. An absolute wealth of knowledge, incredibly polite and totally ruthless when it was required. He was dropped off a few times in a Renta kill van. Thought that was hilarious. Great great man. Great loss. Rest in peace Dig

That restraint he demonstrated where he has the arms behind the back where he states how to walk the oponent out works. I used it to throw some maniac out of Tesco!

I’ve trained with Steve Morris who was other level MA wise, he thought very highly of Gary Spiers. Also, in about 1974 I was training in Shukokai and would get together on occasion to train with a Shotokan and Goju guy, the Goju guy trained with Gary and was as mad as a cut snake.

Here after Matt Leggs video. Wow this guy just comes across as a very dangerous man. Polite and charismatic but I can imagine a total animal when he had to be. These are the real tough guys not those who scream and shout about it however those who can turn it on like flicking a switch.

I only trained for a short while with a nan called Ronnie and he was very friendly with Gary and most people in the know know he was not a man to worry about if you were just a Joe Public but if you have a agenda
