Today's question from Michael B: “When I choose ‘clean image sensor’ on my camera menu, what does it actually do? And is there anything I can do to help it be more effective?”
David explains what causes those spots and lines in your pictures and how to get rid of them. There are many options including the camera's 'clean sensor' function, using dust delete data, and doing it yourself with sensor swabs.

Thanks for a wonderful video. One of the tricks I was taught some 50 years ago was to hold your camera with the lens facing the ground when you change lenses. Keep a rear lens cap ready to immediately cover the lens you have removed. Attach the lens with the body facing down. This way will minimize any dust from getting inside the body. As far as cleaning the sensor, my hands shook so badly, I gave up and sent the camera back to Canon. For $50 + Shipping to them, they do a thorough entire camera cleaning. I had the camera returned 8 days after I shipped it to them.

Great tip on the caps for keeping them clean of dust. I always keep the senior cleaner on as a default with all my canon cameras

I accidentally put a finger-print on the sensor of my new (at the time) Lumix G80 by being clumsy while changing a lens. Nearly gave myself a heart-attack! The finger-print was big and very visible (and that camera has no low-pass filter). Anyway, I bought a kit with the correct sized swaps and the cleaning fluid. I followed the instructions from the kit to the letter and completely cleaned off the finger-print with a single swipe of the swab. I don't think a drew breath until I got to snap a few pictures with it and check that they were OK. Such a relief...the camera was as good as new. Despite this success, I wouldn't want to do it again unless I absolutely had to, and the experience has taught me to be _much_ more careful where my fingers go when I'm swapping lenses.

Hi there. I e done the same and my kit just arrived at home. I’m freaking out now cause my camera is a brand new like you were. Thanks for your words and I’ll tackle the sensor when I get home tonight. Again, thanks for the words for comfort!

you missed one important step for mirrorless cameras that have in body stabilisation. you need to use the cleaning mode in camera just like a mirrored camera because it locks the sensor in place after shacking if you do not you ruin your stabilisation. these sensor are floating until the cleaning mode is finished or camera is off

You can clean your sensor but you need confidence and you need the right equipment. I've cleaned sensors in many cameras over the years. I use the Visible Dust system, cleaners and swabs. And another thing I use, and this is a must is the Visible Dust Quasar Plus 7X Loupe. This offers high magnification and a bright ring light. I wouldn't touch a sensor without these items.

I've been using an illuminated lupe, like the one you showed, along with the Visible Dust system for about 6 years now, cleaning all my camera sensors, and it's been great. If you follow the directions, (i.e. don't reuse the swabs) it's not difficult, and I've never damaged a sensor. Visible Dust's system is a bit expensive, but high quality. Each swab is individually wrapped, and if you're careful, using the blower and self-clean functions first, you should never scratch a sensor.

I've cleaned my own sensors. Camera shop is a bit far for me. If you follow directions exactly you shouldn't have a problem. I practiced on my kid's old Nikon D3000. She took it to the beach. I did all the camera clean function, blowing and dust was still there. I did the swab and sensor cleaning solution. I followed the directions to the letter. I got the dust off and it works fine. So, with that practice I was able to do my D5600 and my D810. No problems so far.

@@DavidBergmanPhoto I understand. I guess I'm putting Nikon to the test. After all, they claim to be rugged cameras. Maybe I should hire myself out as a sensor cleaner since I've had plenty of practice, LOL Thanks for doing these videos!!!

I was VERY nervous about cleaning the sensor on my A7RIII but it was really easy. Buy the correct kit and wipe both ways across the sensor as the cleaning kit instructions say. I have now done it a few times and I am no longer nervous about doing it. I used to take my Nikon back to the supplier and it cost £40 each time. Ouch! Beware when cleaning DSLRs! Remember that the hinged side of the mirror is greased and so do not touch that part of the mechanism with the swab when cleaning the sensor because it WILL smear that grease all over your sensor.

Congrats! I see you've managed the hair problem ;) But you should really clean the camera on your own (such a budget relieeeeeeeeef). Most of the time (in my case that is) some air blows from the rocket air blower do the job. I have also "static" brushes that are so soft to help clean some stubborn particles. The alcoholic swabs are kept for hard tasks like smudges. But generally speaking, most of the time, the blower does the job; Nothing to fear :)

The worst is switching lenses in a fine mist rain. That mist in the air carries dirt and when it dries - spots galore!
@JohnKorvell

Some try compressed air (from an aerosol can). DON"T!. Some brands have a small amount of talc in it (for some dumb reason) so you aggrivate your problem. When I was shooting 4x5 sheet film and cleaned my film holders, I found the speed of the air also actually created static on the film holder. Take David's advice - get a reputable sensor kit and take your time. It works! Or leave it to the photo shop (expensive, but works too). And if you are using a "rocket blower", make sure it too is clean before spritzing the inside of your camera.

I used to have it done at a "local" camera shop. They've closed down and now the nearest shop is almost 200 miles away. Canon states: "Service is No Longer available for This Product" so, at some point, I've got to do it myself. I've purchased the swabs, I just haven't worked up the nerve to use them.

This advice is not complete. 1 Only use a filtered one-way blower. Otherwise you wil blow dust on the sensor because it sucks in dust also.... Mostly dust wil be removed allready now. If not: 2 Use a sensorbrush to remove dust, followed by the blower again. The toplayer on a sensor is glass: you won’t damage it that fast. 3 If this is not enough then use a swipe.

Why are you trying to scare people away from cleaning their own sensors? I have taken my camera to a photo cleaning service. Here in New York City, we can take our camera's to PhotoTech to get cleaned. The problem is that they charge $75 plus tax. And all they are going to do is the same thing one can do by yourself with a sensor cleaning kit. The way you say it David, it's super scarry to clean one's sensor. I understand that one must be careful not to put much pressure on the cleaning swab. But your way of putting it will scare people from doing it themselves. Also, most of us don't have more than one camera, so 'sending it out to Canon' would leave us with no camera. I have also seen videos where they don't recommend that blowing belows as that might introduce dust into the sensor. And why doesn't Adorama, provide a cleaning service? I would not mind paying $20 to get my lens cleaned, anything that cost more would have me do it myself. Again, why are you trying to scare people from doing it themselves? You are a professional, you of all people should not be afraid of cleaning your own sensor.
